Cape Town - ANC members have a duty to protect the integrity of the ANC tripartite alliance, President Jacob Zuma told tens of thousands of ruling party supporters in Cape Town on Saturday.

"The NEC [National Executive Committee] calls on all workers not to allow themselves to be divided and to remind themselves that when the labour movement is divided, the only winners are the bosses," he said.

Specific reference was made to the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu), which last year expelled National Union of Metalworkers of SA. This move was met with resistance from within the trade union federation's own ranks.

"We reiterate that the integrity and unity of Cosatu is non-negotiable. The ANC will continue to support the decisions that Cosatu makes as an independent partner of our revolutionary strategic alliance," said Zuma.

Cosatu faces another tough year with a special congress being planned to tackle internal divisions.
