Recall Potch ANC councillors, says ANCYL

2012-11-22 19:36

Johannesburg - The ANC must recall its councillors in Potchefstroom after the party's mayor was replaced by a DA councillor, the ANCYL said on Thursday.

"The African National Congress Youth League wants to emphatically voice its disappointment and displeasure at the conduct of councillors of the ANC in Tlokwe municipality," it said in a statement.

"It is expected that the national leadership of the ANC must act decisively and recall all those ANC councillors [who voted for the motion]," the league said.

"The mayor was voted out last night [Wednesday], and the new one was voted in immediately afterwards," Tlokwe (Potchefstroom) municipal spokesperson Willie Maphosa said on Thursday.

ANC-driven motion

The transition between the two mayors was "going smoothly". The new mayor would address staff on Friday, he said.

The North West Democratic Alliance said an ANC-driven motion of no-confidence in former mayor Mapetle Mapetle was accepted, with 37 votes in favour and 13 against.

DA councillor Annette Combrinck became the first DA mayor in the province after she defeated ANC candidate Lucky Tsagae by 20 votes to 19.

The ANCYL said the ANC councillors were reckless in pursuing the motion, as it led to Combrinck being voted in.

"While the country is embroiled in discussions about the impact of a motion of no confidence on the president of the country, these councillors... pass a motion of no confidence on the mayor, with disastrous results," it said.

The DA said the vote was indicative of the instability and infighting in the North West province. The party's Tlokwe caucus leader Chris Landsberg said not all councillors participated in the vote for the new mayor.

"A faction of the ANC left the chambers after the motion of no confidence was passed," he said.

The DA said several ANC members tabled a notice of a motion of no confidence in Combrinck shortly after she won the vote.

Bwahaha !!!! They were actually enjoying a moment of itelligent thinking, yes yes yes i know, i it's hardley impossible, but it did happen !

      alfred.neumann.142 - 2012-11-22 20:00

I willing to bet that it wasn't so much a moment of intelligent thinking as it was an embarrassing miscalculation.

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-11-22 20:27

I hope it was intelligent thinking & not a miscalculation.

  • russell.nugent.37 - 2012-11-22 19:47

Totally agree with Daniel. If they can get the job done who the hell cares which party they belong to

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-22 19:49

I don't see any problem with this. Democracy was practiced at its full course. End of story.

      willie.botha.9480 - 2012-11-22 20:03

I agree. And now that democracy has actually achieved something where most voted for something they believe in on all sides someone has to criticise it. So in short what I am hearing from the ANCYL is democracy is allowed as long it is in the ANC's favour. Typical ...

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-11-22 20:21

The ANC and its youth league are unaware of what the definition of the word democracy is. It is as clear as daylight that they will never give up power to the opposition whether it is the DA or COPE or any other party.

      willie.botha.9480 - 2012-11-22 21:31

William. You are right. The one thing about all of this is that in the end they won't have a choice. Because in the end it is the people of SA who decide. And the problem with them is that are illustrating more and more that they seem to care more about themselves than the people who voted for them. They forgot what their objectives are because power started to make them see a distorted reality which they are currently living.

      marilyn.docherty.9 - 2012-11-23 07:29

"The councillors were reckless" - only claimed as such because the outcomedoes not suit the ANC!!

  • trevor.pietersen.3 - 2012-11-22 19:51

    YOU snooze....YOU loose...hahahaha

  • jeffreyknipe - 2012-11-22 19:54

We don't care what party your from... just get the job done properly. DA, make the opportunity count. ANC, don't worry, you'll get it back at some point. Now ... what you say to us getting on with life?

  • ancbasher - 2012-11-22 19:56

Item 1 on the agenda: Change the name back from Tlokwe to Potchefstroom

      brian.exmachina - 2012-11-22 20:54

Yeah, no, only the ANC wastes money like that while people are starving.

      ShaunCrous - 2012-11-22 23:31

Lol yeah when the previous mayor was elected, they had a 1 mil rand party, what a waste

      arie.vdplaats.3 - 2012-11-23 08:11

Not necessary to change the name again to Potchefstroom. Only refer to the Afrikaans or English translation of the name i.e. Potchefstroom in stead of to refer to the name Tlokwe

  • alfred.neumann.142 - 2012-11-22 19:57

And all of a sardine the ANC and their minions are concerned with accountability. Amazing what a small dose of reality and a little dollop of humility can do.

  • Carlton - 2012-11-22 20:00

The ANC would be stupid to do that, that would trigger 19 by elections, in these tough times; they should just get over it.

  • callie.jordaan - 2012-11-22 20:01

i want to see this happening more often!

      willie.botha.9480 - 2012-11-22 21:45

I agree. This shows that the politicians are actually starting do what is best for the people.

  • yisaacson - 2012-11-22 20:01

for once, ANC councillors stand up for what's good for their city and not for the party, American congress style. but the ANC, taught well by their Soviet and Mauist masters, will of course recall them.

  • jmutisi - 2012-11-22 20:07

We have always known that ANC is silly. There they go!!!!

  • mammudi.makgaleng.3 - 2012-11-22 20:12

For as long as she can deliver then is fine with me. The Party issues are of no worth if service delivery is compromised.

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-22 20:26

      Spot on Mammudi.

  • maphumulo.m - 2012-11-22 20:13

So what if Combrick was voted in? So what if that's DA? Until ANC(YL) realise they are not bigger than RSA, they'll always have these problems.. nx!

  • william.letsong.5 - 2012-11-22 20:16

    It is called democracy morons!

  • caine.abel.75 - 2012-11-22 20:32

It should be about service delivery and not the village idiot not being in charge

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-11-22 21:06

ANCYL too big for their boots, they think they run the country. Time to have youth who do something for the young and not 31 year olds doing everything to foster their own interests. Malema destroyed the YL with his arrogance, criminality and greed. That's why the ANC expelled him from the club. High time his buddies woke up before the YL simply gets abandoned.

  • hein.huyser - 2012-11-22 21:37

Start recalling. This will happen more and more. Get used to it anc(yl). The writing is on the wall

  • willie.botha.9480 - 2012-11-22 21:44

Ha ha. I only really looked at the picture now. 100 years of selflessness ? That ship sailed quite a while ago.

  • ACvanNiekerk - 2012-11-22 21:52

HAHAHAHAHA!The ANC's own members overwhelming vote no confidence in ANC.... Point proven. African National Corruption strikes again.

  • bill.mckimm.9 - 2012-11-23 07:52

Theyu voted their conscience, which makes them bad members. Get rid of anyone who has any moral values. Viva the ANC, Viva....
