Renew ANC leadership, says Mashatile

2012-09-10 18:36

Johannesburg - The ANC's leadership must be renewed at the party's conference in Mangaung at the end of the year, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said on Monday.

"We must renew our leadership and make sure when we elect leaders in Mangaung... we bring in the new generation of leaders," he said at the ANC Youth League's 68th anniversary celebrations in Thembelihle, in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

"But we are saying today... we need radical change so that in 18 years or 20 years of democracy our people can look back and say 'we have a better life'."

He said the ANCYL was hosting it's celebrations in Thembelihle instead of Sandton so that they could "see their people".

"At the conference we must adopt radical policies. Let us go there and renew the organisation," he said.

"It [the African National Congress] must remain rooted among the masses of people."

He said the future of the country was in the hands of the ANCYL.

"We are saying to our young leaders, it is your responsibility to make sure you bring about change... so that people can have a better life."

Earlier, Gauteng ANCYL secretary Ayanda Kasa-Ntsobi said the ANC needed "decisive leadership that was not afraid of its people".

She led the crowd in cries supporting Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, who are both reportedly running for the positions of president and secretary general of the ANC respectively.

The crowd sang songs in favour of Motlanthe, while rolling their hands in a gesture synonymous with that used when calling for a substitution during a soccer match.

Some held up one finger in a gesture representing one term for president Jacob Zuma.

More than 500 people attended the celebrations.

    New generations in ANC leadership

The ANC is a miserable failure. They cannot even deliver school books to schools.

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-10 19:19

@Leonardb1 - the real danger is that we are all so desperate for change and real leadership, that we'll accept anyone and anything just to make the nightmare end

ANC will try to get members in line with the general population numbers as requested by the recently sacked Manyi.

      New leaders, same shait.

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-09-10 19:53

I cannot see that any leadership change will make a difference in the ruling party - the apple is rotten at the core - the apple needs to be replaced. But it will not - and where will we all end up?

      denis.gomo - 2012-09-11 02:42

New generation, new faces, same old ANC - nothing will change. Incompetent cadres will still be deployed to plunder and mis-manage municipals, cadres will still benefit from over-priced tenders and still fail to deliver, our children will still get crap education while those of deployed cadres go to private school...the blue light brigades will continue wailing on our freeways with Bob Marley blazing in the background, while the gravy train toots into the sunset....

  • victor.mabule - 2012-09-10 18:59

You are so right Cde Mashatile I hope that this time comrades will have cool heads when we elect new leadership in Mangaung viva ANC viva

"He said the future of the country was in the hands of the ANCYL." And you say "You are so right Cde Mashatile". O dear God have mercy on all of us.. blacks, whites, coloureds, indians and every other living being in this country !

Excellent! `A bit like a new cast for the same old soap opera. Unfortunately the plot will remain the same.

      lionel.defrontignac - 2012-09-11 04:56

@Leonard, true; the soap opera thing sprang to mind, because you can miss several years of any of the shows, and easily pick up the plot by watching the first minute of an episode.

  • silviya - 2012-09-10 19:04

Yes, renew the ANC leadership! Please make sure that your ANC leaders get richer and you will get poorer. That and power are their ultimate motives. No education for you, no better life for you. We need to keep you unemployed, uneducated and in poverty because then you will always vote for us. At the end of this year and at the end of ten years from now. You will probably be starving by then. But we, the ANC leaders will then exploit your children, and thereafter your children's children. No one needs to be a fortune teller to predict the future for the people of SA living in poverty. It will be poverty, and poverty and more poverty for you. Your ANC leaders will make sure of that. Its the only way they can keep control. That is why text books are dumped. That is why everything is deteriorating and why food, houses, electricity, etc. are becoming more and more expensive. We will do everything in our power to keep you from prospering ... the ANC government says. And we will make sure that on your way to starvation .... you will be as discontent, unhappy and filled with hatred, as we can make you .... says the ANC government.

He said the ANCYL was hosting it's celebrations in Thembelihle instead of Sandton so that they could "see their people". Did they show up in minibus taxis as well, or did they arrive in their mercs with their expensive suits and watches to show the poor how well they are living?

      bobby.rosewood.1 - 2012-09-10 19:21

just over 500 where there, doesn't that say it all.

      thabo.modiba.7 - 2012-09-10 19:45

Sharon, u can't show up in minibus taxi at such gathering. U can be suspended of ill discipline or expelled.

  • smalefane - 2012-09-10 19:07

Mashatile, you are one the most corrupt ANC officials in Gauteng. This is very rich coming from you. You are no better than Zuma. You and Tokyo do not care about the masses, you are just after tenders. Your grip on the structures of the ANC in Gauteng will one day come to end.

      peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-09-10 19:21

It would seems u are against embracing change, its about time leaders within the movement started talking. Its better the future we hoping for rather than what we have at present

      smalefane - 2012-09-10 19:55

@Peter-embrace what change? Have you ever been to an ANC branch meeting? Better the devil you know.

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-10 20:04

@peter.mokoena.31 - We'd all welcome meaningful, visible, transparent change. Change can only happen if things get done. There's been enough talking, policies and procedures and investigative committees. We would like people who are actually going to do the jobs we hired them to do.

  • bob.small.7547 - 2012-09-10 19:21

We don’t need renewed leaders in the ANC, we need ANC out the way completely period!

      bob.small.7547 - 2012-09-10 20:07

Yep @ Leonardb1 you are absolutely spot on unfortunately. As reality tells us, the country will implode before there can be a change of government. (or Jesus returns) whichever happens first! Just a pity they took what was a gem of a country and have stuffed it against the wall in grand old African style. The broken 4lb hammer presented to me by a worker today funnily did not surprise me at all. It now rests silently besides the 10inch cold chisel broken a few weeks back. What chance does a fragile democracy have when even steel is no match!

      denis.gomo - 2012-09-11 02:52

@Leonardb1 You are absolutely right's all a numbers game...and the numbers so far favour the ANC. The DA has white and maybe Indian majority supporters with spots of middle class liberal black here and there. It has lots of work to do to garner support from the black man on the street who makes up the numbers...we can only hope for chenge from within the ANC - but that will only happen when the good people within the ANC stand up to be counted and to offer themselves to lead or at least effect change. For now, only the hyenas are calling the shots.

  • Millos Mpofu - 2012-09-10 19:22

I don't see the ANC rule this country in the next Election. Our young generation inside the movement want Tender and they use Racism as well as Tribalism

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-10 19:23

Us we want the ANC government to loose power, then you can change your leadership as much as you like nobody except of your myopic supporters would care, 2019 elections will create a new dawn era of hope in south Africa watch your back ANC, DA is coming to get you slowly but surely.

      Gerda Malherbe - 2012-09-10 19:46

Well said, Keith. Wish it could be sooner

      denis.gomo - 2012-09-11 02:56

The DA will come into power only if people like you mobilise support within the rest of the black masses who hold the sway in terms of sheer numbers. The DA needs to do it's homework - identify potential black leaders from across the whole country and recruit them to grow it's support base - they need to create more grassroot structures. Without this, change will onl be a pipeline dream.

      juannepierre - 2012-09-11 04:02

How can the problems we face rest on the shoulders of one man? Does the deputy assume no responsibility? So what's the point of a deputy? I thought they were all part of one ship? So how exactly is the current deputy going to make things better as a president? I do not get the logic here, because there is none.

  • lionel.defrontignac - 2012-09-10 19:37

This story of "renewal" is old and tired - talking does nothing. Mangaung will be another Polokwane circus, consisting of hyenas and vultures, picking at the corpses of the losers.

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-09-10 19:42

Some rubbish can not be recycled and has to be disposed of. I have no confidence that the ANC is capable of putting together a competent or corruption reduced Government.

  • malcolm.james.macleod - 2012-09-10 19:46

If the hands of the country are in the ANCYL then we truly are lost...

      sarel.brits - 2012-09-10 21:46

If you say lost your implying that something could be found, in ANCYL hand we will not just be lost we would be totally stuffed with an F, Zim will look like the land of milk and honey

      Michael - 2012-09-10 21:52

ANC will not allow ANCYL to mess up the organisation, thats why they have been paralysed, what will happen is that after Mangaung, the remaining skeleton structure led by Lamola will officially be disbanded, new ANCYL will be elected to move the organisation forward, comrades of high intergrity and character are ready. Lamola and his crew lacks independent mind to lead, they are still confused and in disbelief that Malema is no longer an ANC member. The real change in Mangaung will be about them giving new leadership space to advance youth issues forward intead of defending ill disciplined individuals.

  • Michael - 2012-09-10 19:52

I like what is happening in the ANC, contestation is good, but when Zuma campaign starts, he will come with a bang! Watch the space!

The lack of respect is societal, case in point, this article written, when they talk of the victim she is referred to by her married name (her husbands name) and he by his first name. It's something seemingly small but a common voice throughout this country, a woman is nothing without a man. I hope he rots

There are a few people outside the rank and file of the current anc that is worth listening to, but inside that smouldering volcano, there is not one single person worth leading or worth listening to. They have proven that they are there for one reason only. To create hate and division whilst stealing the taxpayer blind. Out with the whole struggle orginization

Wether you like it or not. Zuma is out come DEC. Actually, he went about surrounding himself with so much of his close alies and paying them with power-positions...I reckon by January 2013 - we will have an ENTIRE new SA Governmental Structure. Don`t worry though - the rethoric is used to garner votes...not much else. Once they have power, they will do their best to pillage the country and line their pockets...and that means get into bed with Big (WHITE) business.

The non white middle class are also fed up with the corruption that goes on. They are sick of the idiots who call themselves leaders and have made SA the mebarrassment of the world!
