Rogues sabotaging ANC - Netshitenzhe

2012-10-23 11:00

Johannesburg - Rogue ANC members and those who use the ANC for business gains are sabotaging its attempts to attract skilled leaders, said Joel Netshitenzhe, Business Day reported on Tuesday.

The African National Congress' national executive member reportedly told the paper on Tuesday that attention should also be paid to the party's membership profile.

Netshitenzhe, speaking during a lecture in honour of ANC stalwart OR Tambo at the weekend, warned that weak senior leaders and their poor quality following would erode the party's credibility.

Netshitenzhe said the ANC should consider if it was "sufficient that leaders of the movement should narrowly be professional politicians, with no other link with communities than being leaders of the ANC and with no other skills than political activism".

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu reportedly told the newspaper that Netshitenzhe's "constructive criticism" was in line with continuing debates in the party about attracting high calibre leaders with experience in serving in other community organisations.

      rupesh.hari.7 - 2012-10-23 11:42

Andre - it started way before Zuma. Zuma is just the prime example now. They get angry with the economist for not adding anything to the debate and for telling them what they know already. Despite "knowing corruption exists", they keep doing it again and again, starting from the top. I hope more articles nail them.

      hermann.hanekom - 2012-10-23 12:20

It has been long time that the African National Corruption had the choice to be a so called liberation struggle party or a political governance party. In 18 years they have almost succeeded in making South Africa ungovernable - this was their struggle motto and now we are eating it with them due to them.

  • sagin.verity - 2012-10-23 11:13

Please the anc is sabotaging the anc and south africa. Blame everyone and never accept personal responsibility, this seems to be the motto of black government

      kuno.tschumi.5 - 2012-10-23 11:22

its not the motto of black government, but the motto of the ANC government. As long as we have the top brass being corrupt and abuse their power we will have a problem.

      rupesh.hari.7 - 2012-10-23 11:44

Kuno - ignore those racists. Unfortunately, our fight against corruption gets a set back because of these racists. They didn't fight the pre-apartheid government but call the current corrupt government a black government. They say they are not racist but corruption equals black for them.

      jeremy.thewasp - 2012-10-23 11:47

How can you even put the 'words' ANC and Credibility together...must be some kind of joke surely? The ANC are about to implode, voters have been lied to and starting to see that they have been conned big time.... A - Anarchy N - Nepotism C - Corruption And the there you have it!

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-23 11:53

@ Rupeshari, I presume you believe your comment is not in itself racist? Sagins choice of words may leave a little to be desired, however, if you take into account, the only black government SA has had is the ANC, the comment holds true does it not?

      thomas.paine.946517 - 2012-10-23 12:03

No Rodney, it does not hold logically true. If the ANC are black (which they largely are) and the ANC are corrupt it is not logically correct to assume that all blacks are corrupt. Maybe he should have said "this" black government but really, what was he trying to imply by using the word black at all? Simply say the ANC are corrupt and leave it at that.

  • Jacques - 2012-10-23 11:13

It's difficult to have much credibility when you're in the ANC- their very leader is an embarrassment (politically and personally) and they are openly turning to Apartheid-style ruling, with a pinch of 'Mugabenistic' Brttain-rethoric. Not surprised at the lack of quality leaders.

      rupesh.hari.7 - 2012-10-23 11:44

  • tshepo.malia - 2012-10-23 11:34

It has become a norm, that every politician will enrich him/herself before serving people.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-10-23 12:11

It has also become the norm to continue voting for a corrupt organisation who couldn't give a toss about the general population.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-23 13:20

Unfortunately this is the truth. When we look at other fellow Africa states. The norm was or sometimes still gets practice for so long. The 1st term they enrich themselves. The 1st part of the second term they start working for the people and the 2nd part of their last term they do all in power to cover up their ill doings and try to push a certain candidate forward that can be his "out of jail card" for when he is not in power anymore. Some countries in Africa got it partly right to stop this and they are now the ones progressing.(well progressing if one look at the position they were in before stopping the old "habits")

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-10-23 11:38

If you look at some democratic parties they attract leaders from all fields because the ideals and wishes of those leaders and the party are in tune with each other. How does the ANC ever think they will attract a broad base of knowledgable buisness leaders to their party as long as buisness is seen to be the enemy all the time.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-23 13:34

Sello the ANC is so big that it actually has its own "parties/power groups" inside it. They get so busy with infighting that the forget about us. It also cause a brain drain because all the more intelligent leaders sit on his/her own heap and only fighting off the others's attacks. They must be reduce in size. Streamlined and the others be part of smaller parties or their own to force the leading party to be more service driven to maintain top dog. In the same breath the unions must become unions again and they must stop functioning under one umbrella, but purely the division they represent. When having such a big covering body their aim change and they just become involve in politics and separated from their main purpose. The simple word for it all is POWER. When such a big party the amount of people that push to went through the "funnel" are so many that you lost a lot of good one(intelligent and respectable) in the process.

Yep, that will be a good thing. Politics is not an occupation or a job, you should have a job aside from being a politician. like barack obama is a lawyer. i dont know zuma's job and i dont know malema's job; that why the two of them are so bad for south Africa; but malema worse so than zuma because the illiterate contributions and influence of zuma in south Africa will end in maybe 5-6yrs time, but the illiterate influence of malema will continue for like another 30 years. mind you, man might be living in the moon then and south Africa will have an illiterate president
