Johannesburg - South Africa is looking forward to engaging in an intergovernmental, post-2015 development agenda, President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday.

"In our view, this agenda must be guided by the spirit of equality, mutual trust, inclusiveness and universality," he said in New York.

"The eradication of poverty and hunger, as well as combating inequality at all levels must be at the centre stage of the development agenda".

The post-2015 agenda will be discussed at the 69th session of the general assembly at the UN headquarters this week.

Zuma said the global development partnership had to adhere to the principle of "common, but differentiated responsibilities".

"South Africa also reaffirms the importance of an appropriate balance and level of integration between... inclusive economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability," he said.

Progress had been made in the environment sector, but socio-economic development was "lagging behind" and a stronger focus was needed, he said.

"It is in this regard that economic growth and development must be geared toward job creation, poverty eradication and addressing inequalities," he said.
