SA media unfair, unbalanced - Nzimande

2012-11-02 09:30

Johannesburg - SACP leader Blade Nzimande has accused the South African media industry of being actively opposed to the tripartite alliance and President Jacob Zuma's government, according to a report on Friday.

The Star reported that Nzimande had said almost all media houses refused to acknowledge the ANC's achievements, had unfairly criticised ANC leaders and had resisted transformation.

Fairness and balance

"The media have thrown away every pretence at fairness and balance," Nzimande said at the SA Communist Party's (SACP) conference of commissars.

"They are not even following their own press code, by the way. I don't know why the ANC has retreated on the issue of a media tribunal."

He accused media organisations Avusa, Independent Newspapers and Media 24 of being unfair, unethical and lacking balance in their reporting, the newspaper reported.

Public broadcaster SABC had joined this "posture" lately, Nzimande said after radio station SAfm read only SMSes calling African National Congress leaders "hooligans", the Star reported.

Nzimande urged party members to rethink their engagements with the media, which he dismissed as part of an anti-Zuma "liberal offensive" that dishonestly decried the leadership crisis in the country as a proxy to call for his removal from office.

Accusations rejected

The SA National Editors' Forum chairperson Mondli Makhanya rejected Nzimande's accusations as baseless and said they smacked of dictatorial tendencies, according to the report.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago also rejected Nzimande's accusations an d said the public broadcaster supported all its stakeholders including the government.

Nzimande also said big media houses were quick to buy small, successful newspapers from private companies in order to undermine media diversity.

    whatever dude

  • warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 09:39

Its not the media, its the interactive responses of the general public from the information received via the media.

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 10:24

Here is an example: "Don't think of a red bus coming around the corner" "I repeat! Do not think of it! Do not think of a red double decker bus coming around the corner!" so now I ask... what are you thinking? Is it about a red bus?

      arthur.hugh - 2012-11-02 10:50

Say "Red Lorry Yellow Lorry" 20 times, and the gibberish you hear is pretty much the same as an ANC statement.

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-11-02 10:55

Yerr Warren, what hogwash! Generally I can stomach the irrational views of ccommentating cyber warriors armed to the teeth with WiFi or 3G and a keyboard. But your comment, while trying to sound smart is actually non-sensical. Interactive responses of the general public...could that have been worded better? Also ..."from the information received via the media...", does that not actually not support Blade's argument? Being critical of the incumbent administration does not mean we have to be illogical, and certainly not as illogical as them. It is truthful that the media is not balanced, that it in fact promotes specific agendas. To agree to that does not mean one supports the ANC. Media24 is a perfect example, we all know journalism and professionalism on news24 have accompanied editing and spell check to the cleaners.

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 11:16

@ Gerald, yes I agree, but the media has become a distraction for the government, which is not good, because they should be concentrating on the country's issues and not the media, the media has always since the invention of the newspaper has always made controversial headlines in order to increase interest in order to make sales. The Government should rather use the negatives in the press as constructive crit after and only after their daytime job has been completed by running the country as best as they can first. In order to conduct an orchestra, you have to turn your back to the audience.

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-11-02 11:42

The argument here is not the role of government to society or its reaction to media. The argument here is whether there exists media bias against government, do you deny it?

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 12:22

If it was an argument, but it is just a report from someone's point of view, which is also temporary as things constantly change, so how viable is it for an argument, it's a podium stand to win the crowd as it seems but the two have totally different outputs, Socrates also said that it is human nature to kick someone when they are down (the ANC reputation), but in this case the taxes are high and some individuals are taking advantage as previously stated here by other comments, end of of it and the bigger question is who will be the biggest looser? Who will come off worse? Us tax payers, or the corrupt thieves with all the money. Oh yes we must struggle, for what and how long? That also is beyond 50 shades of grey. Our country's genocide rating is going up again, well we all know the repercussions of that, investors, etc. If the Government does their job correctly then there should not be any issues.

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 12:32

And the media will always be bias in order to create attention and emotion in any country at any time, even if it rains.

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 13:50

Yes 50 shades and Coca-cola also have nothing in common, now I have drank coke, but haven't read 50 shades, I think you kinda missed my point. But this is also a much of a muchness for everyone reading it, is it really about this point, or the next one to be made in the article that is about to be published? These articles here only really count for that particular day and no matter on the comments, opinions and how sometimes personal some people get because it wont change anything that important for this particular day, especially in my or your life. After work I'm going to the bar, cracking a beer, and going to chat to some lovely women, by that time this article is way long forgotten. I honestly know that there are many of us that might do the same. Have a cold one, Cheers!

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-11-02 14:08

Warren, thanx for the chat, and hope I didn't sour you. And yes, I would love to go to the bar and crack open a cold one after work, unfortunately I am working tonight. Enjoy the drink and the lovely women. Ta

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-02 14:15

Gerald no not at all, we are both gentlemen here and we did manage to keep our wits, I also hope I did not offend you either. Its great when commenting here and when other people bring up valid points, the trick is not to take anything personally here. Anyhow its unfortunate about the late shift, also had many of those, have good weekend. Cheers!

This looked like it was going to get nasty, but that was nicely handled gents!

  • clive.kihn - 2012-11-02 09:40

Here he goes, whining again. If you were a little sharper, Blade, you would realise that what the media are against is the ineptitude, poor leadership, corruption and lack of accountability shown by the ruling alliance. As for media curbs: the Berlin wall fell over 20 years ago, Blade, so perhaps you should rethink your Stalinist ways.

  • Andrea - 2012-11-02 09:40

"being unfair, unethical and lacking balance in their reporting," How can it be the above when there is nothing to report on BUT the doings and screwings of Juliarse, Zoemer, Mr. Sharp himself ... oh, and let's not forget all the raping, murdering, hijacking, thieving, bribing, corrupting, etc.

  • nolan.brunsdon - 2012-11-02 09:42

Duh! no sane person would be for them.

      brad.ken.18 - 2012-11-02 12:59

Guys, what are you smoking not so long it Motshega now its you Blade....voetsek man. Start doing right things or get the hell out of our parliament, you bloody morons.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-11-02 09:44

Why does the Communist party not stand on its own feet instead of hitching a ride on the back of the ANC???? Easy cause on their own they would cease to exist, die, kaput, etc just like the PAC. Ride nicely on the back of the ANC and obey orders or otherwise bye bye. Parasite, vampire freeloaders. A total anachronism.

      NicolasGombert - 2012-11-02 10:23

At the last count, they had about 36 000 members, yet they have full representation in cabinet. That's democracy at work!

  • marilyn.docherty.9 - 2012-11-02 09:45

If there was no corruption, bribary, stealing and the 'featering of own nests' The Media would then be able to focus on the 'positive achievements'.

  • talana.malherbe - 2012-11-02 09:45

Mr Nzimande, its not the media, its us that speak our minds and voice our opinions. Sorry I thought I live in a democratic SA..... No unfairness about it, once you and your ANC fat cats start serving the people instead of yourselves, our comments will change...

  • ally.oh.7 - 2012-11-02 09:46

No sh***t, Sherlock. The media, which comprises some pretty savvy people, actually recognise that being "actively opposed to the tripartite alliance" is the berst thing for this country because the tripartite alliance is a total rip-off and besides out and out dictatorship, it's a very bad thing for SA.

  • ally.oh.7 - 2012-11-02 09:47

Mmmm, Blade, you're not very sharp.

  • freddie.miff - 2012-11-02 09:47

Blade is very paranoid. The ANC is totally useless and deserves the negative press they receive. Cosatu is destroying the economy and SACP want to do the same, they are too ineffectual though.

  • bosveld.reaper - 2012-11-02 09:48

It is not the media. It is the government total lack of competence....Simple ne

  • gaby.hide.3 - 2012-11-02 09:48

SACP & COSATU have become irrelevant. They just don't know it yet.

  • nadineelvina.francis - 2012-11-02 09:49

A Govt managed media is a BANANA Republic. The ANC should to why the people are unhappy rather than blaming the media.

      njabulo.ngcobo.100 - 2012-11-02 11:20

Point of correction, the public needs balanced reporting not one sided; so if you agree with Blade that there's a skew in the media, then we all should worry. And please try to use ur mind - not emotions - when writing here because it all shows: check ur last sentence...

  • koos.vanzyl.98 - 2012-11-02 09:50

As soon as you will realise what is actually happening you will agree with the media. Do you really condone all the wrongs? It is a very long list, sir. Try to convince your minister of finance that the e-tolling is in principle wrong. If it was properly subjected to a proper feasibility it would not even have been considered. And now even a clever minister - Gordhan - HAVE to try and justify it because the losses can not be budgeted for?? Blade - convince your leader to go into a debate with Zille - and try to reason with wisdom and insight. Please. We will all help with the problems if the reaction on the wrongs in the media are accepted - because it's true - and not argued - because it just publish your lack of wisdom, or is it pure ignorance. Please tell me.

  • braamc - 2012-11-02 09:50

  • luytster - 2012-11-02 09:51

Hey Nzimande where is the money you stole? If you owned up and returned it that would give the press something positive to report on.

  • robqb - 2012-11-02 09:51

      george.frangs - 2012-12-05 08:57

      :\

  • clinton.bowden1 - 2012-11-02 09:55

Well I am sure if Zuma did something like "Fires 100 Imcompetant and corrupt staff" or "Re-directs AllNkandla funds for upliftment of Baragwanath hospital" the media would have reasons to sing praises but all Zuma and co are doing is supplying the media with the means to critisize. Blade, your head is up Zuma's a..hole so far it explains why you look so bad but also why you cannot see why the media is so "unfair and unbalanced".

      njabulo.ngcobo.100 - 2012-11-02 11:30

Great point in your first paragraph, Clinton. But you marred it by succumbing to emotions and started adopting words like "hole" and how people look like. Your last line makes you just like Blade. Very stupid of you two

      aspruyt - 2012-11-02 13:13

"Very stupid of you two" Two? =) Sometimes you need to stoop lower to communicate at that "players" level. Blade's bar is pretty much so low that no educated, self respecting, modern human will ever be able to stoop to his level.

  • nosiphom.mazibuko - 2012-11-02 09:56

The ANC has the SABC to sing its praises, that is ok. The rest of the media looks at things critically and criticises where neccessary (e.g. Nkanldagate, Zumaville, wich we would not know about if we did not have a critical, robust media). Clean up your act and the media will have nothing to report on. Be corrupt and rotten, the media will feed on you - thats their job!

  • trevor.dean.10 - 2012-11-02 09:57

If the government was doing its job properly, there would be no need to criticise.

  • kuvha.tshilamatanda - 2012-11-02 09:57

i think we must remove this people from our government cause we people we are government and this jokers think it is ok to feed us with lies and empty promises, creating better life for their families & friends ignoring voters in the pool of poverty, they are good on imposing policies that are affecting ordinary tax payers like gauteng etolling system is a crap, this people should leave our parliament enough is enough!

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-11-02 09:57

Mr. Blunt, everyone in his right mind should report the crap the ANC is busy with.

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-11-02 09:58

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-11-02 10:12

At least the whipping boy is not apartheid this time. Is this a sign that they are now looking for a new "fall guy"????

  • margaret.brand.12 - 2012-11-02 09:59

More like words from a unbalanced mind. Actions are better than words. There are more poor people now, than before 1994, also education and health services have gone down hill. Corrupt officials have robbed the poor of a better life. So where is the fairness and balance that you are refering too?

  • luytster - 2012-11-02 09:59

Hey Blade where is that money in the rubbish bag that you stole??? If you confessed and returned it that would give the press something positive to report on now.

      njabulo.ngcobo.100 - 2012-11-02 11:36

Great point Vicky; wish they would hear u and clean up their act. But that seems highly impossible...

  • ludlowdj - 2012-11-02 10:06

Every educated and rational member of society locally and abroad is very well aware of what the tripartite alliance and ANC rule means to South Africa, and any country dealing with South Africa. You Blade are also viewed with the disgust and disdain you deserve. The ANC's successes are localized and insignificant when compared to their failures and the general decline in basic service delivery and living standards in general. The press is accurate in its reporting and opinions 99% of the time. Your agenda is in keeping with the ANC's target of reducing this country to another communist socialist regime, and is rightly challenged and thwarted at every turn. The ANC's outright racist attitudes toward whites, its BEE policies that specifically exclude white from everything from job opportunity to welfare assistance and the attempts by Cwele to force through legislation that would in effect allow anyone to be detained in terms of national security and prevent the release of information in respect of the daily looting of taxpayer money by the upper echelons of the leading party are not a culmination of your ideals but instead simply represent the first volley of what will be the formation of another another soviet socialist republic.

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-11-02 10:16

On the subject of Cwele. How is this idiot Head of State Security and yet he said he did not know his wife was involved in drug deals. Right man for the JOB??????????????????????????????

      ally.oh.7 - 2012-11-02 10:56

Steve, Cwele was too busy screwing the the electorate and living the high life to see what being done by his criminal wife.

      njabulo.ngcobo.100 - 2012-11-02 11:49

It amazes me that you are amaze Mr Nzimande, you are failing the people of SA and if someone tells you that , you cannot understand ? Is it because you don't care and are just there for the riches ? It is naïve to think that ordinary people and the press cannot see through this. I fail to see were you are building up anything in this country !

  • Spiral - 2012-11-02 10:13

Fairness and balance? like the ANC's BEE policies? Just goes to show, that there are still an elite group of blacks benefiting from the ANC's anti-white policies & yet the whites still get blamed... There's no one as blind as he who doesn’t want to see!

  • collet.letsoalo - 2012-11-02 10:14
