Johannesburg - The SACP has not received a political levy from Cosatu in the last four years but it continues to pay rent to the trade union federation, its second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila said on Thursday.

"It is a lie that we don't pay rent. We pay rent," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

However, he said the political levy was not enough to cover the SA Communist Party's (SACP) overheads.

The highest amount the party ever received was R800 000.

"Most [of this money] will go to our rental fee in Cosatu."

The SACP's offices were housed inside the Cosatu's headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Mapaila said the levy was not just for the SACP.

The money was shared between the party, the Cosatu May Day rally, SA Students Congress, Congress of SA Students and the ANC election fund.

"It's not millions... we are funded by our members.

"The SACP has always believed its struggle for socialism should be funded by the workers," he said.
