School racial abuse 'sickening'

2012-10-11 22:27

Johannesburg - A report that pupils were being racially abused at a Boksburg school is disturbing, the Inkatha Freedom Party in Gauteng said on Thursday

"We are sickened by the reported racial discrimination doing the rounds at schools in Gauteng," provincial leader Bonginkosi Dhlamini said in a statement.

The Star reported on Thursday that several parents of pupils at the Parkdene Primary School in Boksburg claimed the children suffered racial abuse and discrimination.

This was apparently because they wore red strings around their wrists as part of the Hindu faith.

A Grade 3 pupil was reportedly discriminated against by his music teacher, who is the principal's wife, for wearing red strings on his wrists.

His parents claimed he was called a "coolie" several times in front of his classmates and told to take the string off.

After complaining, the parents were told the pupil had to wear a red jersey to hide the string.

The principal refused to comment, saying the department was dealing with the matter.

Dhlamini said the teacher's alleged behaviour "demonstrates the dwindling humanistic culture in our society".

"This unendurable action by the teacher is a regressive sign of racial battles still protruding in our society, and strict measures needs to be taken against those who... blatantly attack innocent children because of their race and religion."

Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane was not immediately available for comment.

Mankind is a sick creature. We have no respect for one another and the human rights that come along with it. We have no respect for the law of the land, even the tiniest ones like stopping at stop streets. We have no respect for life. So I would personally rather not put my faith in mankind.

      lovenergy - 2012-10-12 06:59

The answer to all these humans problems doesn't lie with the older generation but with the younger, yet it would seem that they even hate their own offspring. Humans are parasites who forgot what it means to be human. We all had so much potential...what a pity

  • Notrax123 - 2012-10-12 02:30

@ the IFP, I agree with you that any type of racial abuse is wrong. Now, IFP, agree with me that farm attacks on "white farms" by blacks and attacks on elderly "white" folk by blacks, is racial abuse - can you?

      mzondistanley - 2012-10-12 09:59

An eye for an eye will leave all of us blind, so let us not take the law in our own hands!!

  • glenda.mackay.18 - 2012-10-12 04:07

This is total misleading reporting, so one sided. Parkdene school is a well run school. Please news24 report do yr reporting more professional!

  • vmeiring1 - 2012-10-12 05:30

What do they expect. The ANC and their comrades is racial orientated and I think since 94 racial hate is now on the highest level ever. BEE, AA, etc, but even with all that crap the new elites cannot follow the footsteps of the managers prior 94, and that's a fact

  • breinlekkasie.dodelikegif - 2012-10-12 06:20

That is not racial abuse. The school has a certain dress code and just as Catholic children are forbidden to wear a crucifix necklace and the popular girl is forbidden from wearing make-up Hindus are forbidden to wear red strings. Get with the program or remove your child from the school and send them somewhere else. One gets sick and tired of this continues bickering about racial discrimination where non is to be found.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-12 07:48

As long as you and your leaders may call Indians and Coloureds "Coconuts" and whites "Boers", people will continue. Why? Because YOU set the example.

      sedeshan - 2012-10-12 10:13

Hi Breinlekkasie - I agree with you 100%. It was not a race issue...until she called the child a 'coolie'

      donald.perumal - 2012-10-12 10:37

And that gives a right to calla child a coolie!

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-12 12:07

That gives no one the right to ANYTHING. But, because she called the child whatever, every second person on this forum now apparently has the right to sling NEW racial slurs around? NO! Deal with the issue at hand the right way. The right way involves: 1) Following procedure 2) Setting the example. NOT going off on this forum about "killing boers" and "racist whites" and "white people will never change" et al. Cappish?

      sedeshan - 2012-10-12 13:40

@ Dewald - well said man. People jump at the opportunity to turn everything into an all out race war! Just read the comments on a few other articles and see how quickly everything becomes about race and the government. There's a story on here about a woman being charged with beastiality and even that became a race issue! LMFAO

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-10-12 06:39

No this is wrong that little red string is not spoiling the school uniform and if said teacher did call them coolies then she should be fired and made to apologise in person to the children

  • lovenergy - 2012-10-12 06:52

I don't think we should come on here and justify what this woman or school are doing. I understand the issue of not being alllowed to wear any jewellery to school but calling a child a choolie? That is definitely overstepping the line! Adults are supposed to be the examples and yes I do agree that it's due to a decrease in compassion and our own humanity. Its not just one group, the rot runs through all of us and now it's trickling down to our children. The human race is a bunch of disgusting parasites that has no love left in their hearts for anyone. It amazes me that we can all think so highly of ourselves when the truth is that we have long ago lost the things that made us human.

      sedeshan - 2012-10-12 10:18

Exactly! This is what I've been trying to tell people here. As an adult and a teacher, she should be setting the right example for these kids. I wonder what his classmates will take away from this? They all have a brand new word to use...

  • charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-10-12 07:19

And this is being perpetuated by the members of the so-called Gods chosen race in the name of cultural superiority. Superiority se moer superiority se gat, we are sick and tired of this white imperialism nonsense.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-12 07:55

You clearly have crossed paths with the Afrikaner-Israelite sect. Wake up, enlighten yourself, and go see the efforts of White "imperialist" DA members in black communities. If they DON'T do it, you say "see, racists, care only about themselves". If they DO it, you say "see, racists, trying to fool us". So, what exactly then, do you want?

  • DarrenCooper68 - 2012-10-12 07:32

Situations like these need cool heads and can quite easily be resolved. Every former Model C school , like Parkdene Primary, has a Religion policy drawn up by the SGB which is mandated by the parent body. The policy can only be adopted once approved by the department or education. This policy is available for all parents, even when admitting learners. The question here is what the policy allows or does not allow. If either the Teachers or Learners are in contravention of this policy, there is a disciplinary policy that should be applied.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-12 07:57

Your argument makes sense, except the "wonder which nationality and religion she is". Imagine if we started with that with every burglary, rape, and armed robbery. "Wonder which nationality he was?" It's not fair. But yes, there must FIRST BE AN INVESTIGATION, and if she BROKE THE RULES, she must be removed from her job. Do things in the right order, without the racial bias.

  • ashoni.puncham - 2012-10-12 07:39

The South African Constitution, Chapter 2, Section 15 THE RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION, BELIEF and OPINION...The Constitution, the cornerstone of our Democracy and we see comments such as overlooking someones religious does this solve any problem? Instead of sweeping these issues 'under the carpet' we should instead educate people on respecting each other and yes this does include respecting someone elses religion, a stepping stone to accepting each individual as they are instead of attempting to change them so we don't have to deal with our own inner turmoil.

  • Kagiso Tlhakung - 2012-10-12 07:44

i call for an end to so called model C schools...these schools whr built by the apartheid gov' blood money en after 94 when blacks try to enter prices are suddenly raised en they are suddenly “model C”, this is bull. Its tym we force these schools to accept 55% black kids and force them to reduce fees or jst use a special tax on whites to fund the bursaries of black kids into these schools. Also the gov must criminalise racial abuse...5year jail sentence or 5years community service in townships must be given to any white person who even dares in this democracy to do such.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2012-10-12 07:58

Stop this nonsense. Regardless of who built what schools and maintained what systems, the 'apartheid' gov lasted only 40 years. Yours have lasted 18 years, without as much as a peanut to show for it.

  • donald.perumal - 2012-10-12 09:48

Hi All The biggest problem SA has is that depending on which race one is,one will defend anything.Rodney is correct in saying that children should be allowed to wear symbols that are important to them especially religious ones SO long as they do not interfere with school work or offend others. In this case it was an harmless piece of red string which highlights the significance education and prosperity, the Teacher's attitude and response was inappropriate. Saying that No religion should be allowed in school will pose a real problem to the school because you will find that at the heart of the school especially assemblies is the Christian Religion, so that's out. The teacher should be reprimanded and sanctioned. The Dept should act decisively in this matter.

  • donald.perumal - 2012-10-12 09:51

To The Affected Community Please organise yourself, march as a group to the school and demand action! It is your right because SA is a secular country that affordfs its children the freedom to practise their Religion of choice. After all the school practises its Christian Religion!

  • donald.perumal - 2012-10-12 10:27

Hi All Its the reason I state that the DA should not be trusted because deep down in the psyche of most white people is the belief that Christianity is the only religion worth following and people are then judged on that standard. Once they have enough power they will disrespect all other religions and cultures. So beware DA supporters!

1st# An Indian child was abused (Racially or otherwise) by a European Teacher who's salary is paid by the parents of the child (Through tax and school fees) and that makes the child's parents her boss. 2nd# The school has regulations and procedures that guides what is accepted and not accepted during school hours, as a result, they have a form that is given out to parents on learner registration. Those procedures makes it clear what is accepted and not accepted as per school policy and are guided and informed by the South African School Act, 84 of 1996. Consequences on failure of compliance are listed there for all those who want to enroll their children to see. 3rd# South Africa is a democratic state with a constitution that protects all beliefs, religions and recognises all cultural practices unless they are in violation of others rights or religions, it says there in the South African School Act, 84 of 1996, read it!!! 4th# If in anyway the said child has violated the school code of uniform, as per signed and agreed by the parent, then the school Principal and the SGB are there to oversee compliance. Not a class teacher to, verbally or physically, abuse a learner. Be it white, green, yellow etc teacher.

Damn, scary stuff coming out of peoples minds, just a simple straIghtforward article has turned this into a racial slur/dibate/hate/stupid comments. You know I have noticed that most people that have race issues in this f-dup South Africa it's black people and white people, I mean look at colored mense and Indians, those people are just relaxed minding their own business, but between black and white people its like a cat and dog fight, always up on each others throaghts. flip...One thing I like though is that at the end of the day, when the time comes, we die the same death, the so called skin color we boasted of will save no men from death, it will rot 6ix feet under and worms will have a feast of lupercal on it, no more will feel that you deserve better bcause you are white or black. Lets just live life and enjoy it, for it is here today and tomorrow gone, you will grow old and grey, till living bcomes meaningless to u, but when you look back you see that you have lived your life harbouring hate and being sick looking at someone whose skin is not the same as yours, and that has caused you years of slipless nights, to a point that you started having deseases that you shouldnt even have had in the first place, as for me I dont care if the person standing next to me is white or black or colored or indian or foreighner or whatever, I just make sure that I live my life to the fullest and work hard and smart to get the things that I need and those i want.
