Set timeframes needed to fix service woes

Johannesburg - Service failures, such as poorly-built RDP houses, need to be fixed within a set timeframe, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

She urged members of the legislature to commit to specific time limits to rectify service failure matters where they conceded wrong-doing, her spokesperson Momelezi Kula said in a statement.

Madonsela briefed the legislature on key complaints identified at public hearings held during her 2012 Stakeholders Consultative Dialogue.

These included cases where the provision of housing was not matched to basic infrastructure such as sanitation, schools, hospitals and policing services.

There were also allegations that delivery guarantees were not always obtained from contractors.

This led to "the state having to shoulder the burden, paying for the rectification of shoddy work".

There were also complaints of allocation irregularities. Many older people had waited for many years for housing, some having applied when the RDP programme began in 1996.

"Speaking at the end of the meeting, the public protector expressed gratitude to the provincial legislature, stating that the meeting had been extremely fruitful," Kula said.

Set time frames would imply having a plan. We here much of promises and even from our own Pres what should/not happen. What we never, ever hear is the plan as to HOW and WHEN. Until all voters start asking these hard questions of aspirant nominees *before* we make our mark, we're just going to end up with more of the same - people who have absolutely no interest in doing the job they were hired to do. And as we learn daily, once they get those jobs, it's dang nigh impossible to get rid of them, even when they blatantly break the law.
