Sheriff attaches Gariep cars, furniture

Johannesburg - The Gariep municipality (Burgersdorp, Steynsburg, Venterstad, Oviston) should be placed under provincial administration, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday.

DA local government spokesperson Dacre Haddon said the local sheriff attached municipal vehicles and furniture on Friday after it failed to pay staff pensions over to the SA Municipal Workers' Union.

"With on-going weekly attachments of municipal assets, it is clear this municipality is in dire financial straits and needs urgent provincial intervention."

Haddon said he had written to Free State Local Government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane asking him to invoke Section 139 of the Constitution, which allows a province to take over a bankrupt municipality.

"Furthermore, I will be asking the MEC why he has been slow in implementing emergency measures to rectify this municipality and why an existing forensic report has not been made available to the provincial legislature."

DA MP Annette Steyn had written to the public protector to ask for an investigation into the state of the municipality.

Haddon said that Gariep was a poor area, but said mismanagement in the administration of the municipality had exacerbated the situation.

"... These vulnerable folk remain in the quagmire of poverty and squalor instead of being given opportunity to live dignified lives by the supply of efficient municipal services."

The Gariep municipality could not be reached for comment.

I don't believe any of the bigger ANCorruption led municipalities are any better. For the moment they are perhaps able to better weather the crisis due to their volumes and government support, but the slippery slope is just the same.

Whoever wrote this article is on drugs and I am now struggling to believe this story, although it is so believable. The MEC Mlimo Qhoboshiyane, he's from the Eastern Cape and not Free State. They should rather withdraw this article and do more research before they bring it back.

Mondli. It still boils down to the fact that the mismanagement of the municipality has led to this situation. I lived in Burgersdorp for 8 years, and have friends who are working as clerks there. Believe me, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

We rant and rave BUT do nothing about it. There are ways ....... Go think about it. Can't vote the ANC out for as long as there is boerewors and rolls, no schooling et al. ( keeping the nation stupid) ANC only wants money ..... So go figure.

Eish....where there money.....fraud and corruption are the order of the day. They employ people dodgy people, nobody ever checks up on them and when they do its you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. It then gets referred to government who only have two departments. Fraud and corruption so they will take a long time to decided where this matter should referred to.

If the Town Clerk is right and only 4000 ratepayers to pay for the power for 4 towns then it was a balls up from the day the municipality was established.
