Out of the mouths of babes...

Johannesburg - Ahead of former president Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday next week, City Press visited the Little Ashford Preschool in Johannesburg to find out from the very young what they knew about the very old.

All we can say is that their future history teachers have their work cut out for them.

» Masego Msibi (4)
I know Mandela was in a box. On his birthday, I am going to paint a picture of a president present for him.

» Oliver Cloete (4)
My mummy and daddy know him, and I know he went to jail because he was fighting for my

» Hlumisa Nompuza (4)
Nelson Mandela is my friend. I saw him on my TV busy talking and I was wearing my nightie.

» Malcom Doke (5)
I have seen him in the news with lots of people around him. I also know he does president things for the World Cup.

» Ben Brews (4)
I have seen Nelson Mandela on my TV fighting for freedom.

» Lesedi Mabalane (4)
I know Mandela is the leader for soccer and then he went to jail. My mummy said I should know him when he was on my TV. I greet Mandela when he comes to my house and he watches TV at my house.

» Ben Potgieter (4)
I have seen Mandela before when he was talking to someone, where someone works. He was talking about something that you don’t drink wine. He went to jail because he was fighting with someone.

» Lesedi Makhele (4)
Nelson Mandela is our president. I have seen statues of him close to my dad’s house. I see lots of things about him on my TV every day and I know he went to jail because he was naughty.

eusdc - this is very true, but History goes back further than that. kids should be learning ALL of south african history including boer war and nelsons struggles!

      wandile.mgcodo - 2012-07-15 18:59

Dawn Campell Gibson , the article is about Nelson Mandela , not the Boer War.

  • rob.tubbs.39 - 2012-07-15 18:15

Lets keep politics out of this - lets teach them that we live in a great country and that through education and hard work - ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE - for anybody. Teach them that we are diverse, we have different cultures, different histories but we are here, now, and what we do now is what matters. We are all South Africans.

      Frank - 2012-07-15 18:51

Who would give this a thumbs down. Probably ANCYL genius.

      wandile.mgcodo - 2012-07-15 19:01

  • Mark - 2012-07-15 18:49

Yes, Lesedi! Nelson Mandela is our Eternal President, just like Kim Il Sung in North Korea. You had better be ready to cry until your tears run out and blood replaces them on the day that he dies. This Mandela worship is sick, I mean he did a few good things in his life, but does he deserve to be deified? Statues, TV shows, street and place names. Mandela, Mandela, Mandela is crammed down our throats whilst the party that he stood for defecates on his legacy. Where else do you see such unmitigated idolatry over one man besides the most dysfunctional of countries?

      dawood.timol - 2012-07-15 19:16

@ Markrschulz you should even consider one of your kids "MANDELA"

      dawood.timol - 2012-07-15 19:16

      I mean naming him MANDELA

      jewel.moyana - 2012-07-15 19:44

Mark what a load of rubbish!

      morne.hennings.5 - 2012-07-15 20:28

Some people are so self-centered. I mean, \after we nearly destroyed this country\? What the heck is the cANCer busy doing? Catch a wake-up, I owe you and your corrupt brothas stuffall. Different strokes for different folks I suppose...

      Mark - 2012-07-16 01:00

No, Actually your own ANC government made that comparison, Wandile. And Dawood, I bet you didn't know that my great great grandfater spent 3 years in court from 1913-1915 FIGHTING forced removals of Blacks as a result of the Land Act until he was placed under house arrest during World War 1 (He had a German passport so they locked him up for being a threat to national security, in the meantime they removed the 100 families he was FIGHTING for to a reserve). So shut up about my family, you racist moron - you think just because I am white my family did bad things to Blacks??

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-16 08:36

Are you on parole dawood or have you been pardoned ?

  • gerhard.mostert.92 - 2012-07-15 18:59

When will the artificial herofication, especially by white people, of Nelson Mandela come to an end? And is it the result of a distorted sense of guilt?

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-07-15 19:28

wandile - just incase you didnt see my message was directed to somebody, responding to his comment. He actually brought up History! and like i said History means just that, not just what suits YOU!

  • smutete1 - 2012-07-15 19:40

this is very sweet.i have no idea how (others) will be remembered and appreciated this much

  • Josh - 2012-07-15 19:43

Lovely, innocent and undiluted views. I luv this article!

  • koos.vanrooyen.12 - 2012-07-15 20:39

It's so shame for misleading little children. You must remember one thing very good. God say that everyone who dares to do wrong to a little chil, won't see the Kingdom. That means: straight to the hell - my friends!

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-07-15 21:31

Koos - what is your point exactly?

  • christopher.collings.9 - 2012-07-16 05:00

Mandela went 2 jail for terrorism master Cloete. Just show what garbage they teach our kids @ school these days.

  • - 2012-07-16 08:33

This is the same concept as the book that was published called The Children's Mandela, where they asked kids all sorts of questions about Madiba. Very cute and enlightening answers from all the kids across the country. See

  • nak.mabusela - 2012-07-16 09:36

Mandela is a Soccer Leader bwaaaaa!!! - He watches TV at my house!! .. You got to love kids..

  • Renaldo Askham - 2012-07-16 11:26

I wish I had madiba coming to watch tv at my house, the mind of an innocent child :)

  • little.ashford - 2012-07-17 02:02

Actually, this was a spontaneous visit to the school by the press. The kids had no idea what questions were coming to them, neither did the teachers. You'll be surprised on how much children know or don't know just by exposure driven by parents, media, or environments.

  • Sam.Hatton - 2012-07-18 09:41

They completely misspelled my daughter's surname ("Lesedi MAKHELE?"). Lol, Anyway. Its funny coz I told her people go to jail when they're naughty and at another point she found out Mandela was in jail. Guess that's her logic and way of putting the two together. "He was naughty". Hahaha.
