South Africans voting with their feet - DA

2012-10-30 18:21

Cape Town - The Census 2011 results released on Tuesday show South Africans are "voting with their feet", the Democratic Alliance said.

The DA welcomed the release of the results, which showed improvements in a number of key areas, DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane said in a statement.

The census deserved to be studied in some detail by all South Africans with an interest in the state of the nation, he said.

"What is immediately clear is that South Africans are voting with their feet.

"Hundreds of thousands of South Africans are migrating away from areas where service delivery is poor and job prospects are few."

In the past 10 years, 278 261 and 152 857 people left the Eastern Cape and Limpopo respectively.

There had been some commendable improvements since the last census in 2001.

Average annual household income had increased and there were fewer people who had never been to school.

"These are welcome developments. But there are still millions of poor South Africans who remain without access to piped water, flush toilets, electricity, and refuse removal," he said.

Many of them still lived in areas where government was dysfunctional and service delivery non-existent.

Where it was in government, the DA was working hard to improve service delivery step-by-step.

"We will continue doing whatever it takes to deliver the better life our people were promised over a decade ago," Maimane said.

Congress of the People spokesperson Nick Koornhof congratulated Statistics SA on completing what appeared to be a successful census.

"However, it is picturing a very challenging time ahead. This census shows the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP) becomes vital if we want to rescue a majority of South Africans from poverty traps," he said.

The fact that only 28% of all South Africans were completing matric, and that almost 9% had no schooling, showed the education system was in serious trouble and failing South Africans.

"A highlight is that we are seeing a growing black middle class and black South African income has surged 169%, but unfortunately the overall census shows that the progress to narrow the gap between the poor and wealthy is not emerging fast enough," he said.

Allthough black people's salaries increased the majority's minds are still stuck in apartheid, trapped in the illusion that they are still in a struggle and that the anc is their saviour.. I wonder when will they awake to see that the anc is holding them under instead of pulling them up?

  • kdbeer - 2012-10-30 20:43

Jz said in the news education was gr8, and the data shows only 29% has matric. Poor show mr president. Are you going to continue to blame everything else going wrong on apartheid. Did "die groot krokidil" stop you from delivering text books. It is promising to see that more and more people are getting gatvol of all the BS the ruling party is feeding them

  • jaco.smith.735 - 2012-10-30 21:00

Ja 28% that made matric was the one's that spelled there name correct,That's how low the standard is these days in SA.Spell your name right an you have matric.Where 140th out of 144 country's,Dam we going backwards and fast.If your head is dumb your body must suffer.Ons is dom maar ons werk hard heha!! heha!! ho!!

  • agood.filter - 2012-10-30 21:16

This census is all lies. What about the millions of illegal immigrants?

  • andre.ackermann.14 - 2012-10-30 21:21

The census figures and questions/answers are being strategically intepretated to suit the excuses of Government for their poor performance, i mean, Zuma just blamed the previous Government and whites for the poor education system and results. Now, very selectively, they broadcast the point that whites earn 6 times more than blacks but without further qualification. The uneducated will believe this crab. So you know what, stuff the census results. It was a waste of money and yet another expensive PR excercise by a bunch of brainless bureaucrats.

  • clifford.vanheerden - 2012-10-30 21:42

Does anyone know that the City of Cape Town actively creates unemployment by closing down people working from home and have no other form of income and cannot get work in the formal sector and are facing losing everything.

      kseyffert - 2012-10-30 22:17

Cliff, I have no idea what you are talking about however, I am guessing that you or someone you know started a business from home and got it killed because your suburb is zoned residential and you cannot or will not afford rent in a commercial or industrial zone. If this is the case, then really! what did you expect?????

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-10-30 22:52

  • Karabo Phetoane - 2012-10-30 23:05

@Rikus Mmusi have got a Master's Degree(white Master, the DA) thats why he is speaking the same language as them. How can your oppressor miraculously become your liberator, unless there is something they want from you of which is the black vote but nothing else.Dom Alliance

      sihle.miya1 - 2012-11-01 19:20

That's true and this Dom Maimane can't read their lips

  • clivesya.khumalo - 2012-10-31 09:55

I see Mr Maimane conveniently neglected to comment on the crucial issue -income gap - btn white households and black households. No word from the madam hereto?

      jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-10-31 23:41

If you take the top twenty percent of black income, they outstrip white income by far, we are now a society based on class not colour. Black middle class people have the same values as white, coloured and Indian middle class people. You are in danger of being left behind by your poor grasp and analysis of what is really happening in RSA.

      bobby.rosewood.1 - 2012-11-01 21:35

I think that that is a good point. But instead of nailing whites, we should focus on improving all basic opportunities for blacks, thus giving 'economic freedom', and that starts at creche level. Education is the key. The big difference in income can be traced back to education. Now this is a legacy of apartheid, I know. but should we not have seen bigger improvements on that part (for non-white kids) after 18 years! What I see, is that gvt is trying to bring education levels down-; and that will impoverish all,I don't think that we will get the results we want with that kind of policy (40+ pupils per class, for model C schools, as recommended now)

  • banele.xaji - 2012-10-31 17:54

That is exactly how you get a vote- insult the people, "voting with their feet"- that alone is so condescending. Tell me why I should vote for DA- not insult me. Give me reason, not insults.

      bobby.rosewood.1 - 2012-11-01 21:26

He merely points out that people migrate to where decent opportunities are, and those areas are Gauteng and Western Cape. Why should you feel offended by that? Last time I checked, Gauteng was in ANC's hands, so he gives you guys a compliment too.

  • sihle.miya1 - 2012-11-01 19:15

Maimane, u will never see whites spending their money on Black person, so they are using you stupids to attack your fellows and after that u will be a garden boy the gvnt is doing their best to put infrastacture to every household but it can never happen in 18 yrs. whites were chasing our fathers to rurals and never built roads, clean water, electricity, etc and yet u are wearing a DA shirt, nx

  • bobby.rosewood.1 - 2012-11-01 21:22

Nobody came to ask anything, not seen anyone from this census. So how did they get my info? From my Edgars account?
