Stop calling ANC corrupt: Zuma

2012-11-03 12:02

Johannesburg - South Africans should stop calling the ANC corrupt because that was simply not true, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.

Zuma was addressing a rally organised by the SA Unemployed Workers Union (Sauwu) in East London, the Weekend Post reported.

"People are saying this but it is untrue," he told a packed house at the Orient Theatre.

The president also criticised people who said South Africa's poverty and wealth gap had widened since the ruling party took over in 1994.

"No one in the country knew how big the gap was before 1994 ... we discovered it, so how can they say something else," he said.

However, Zuma said the gap had decreased through grants and black economic empowerment.

SA not an exception

"Fifteen million people have been taken out of poverty... so it is not true."

But Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University political analyst Jolene Steyn-Kotze said Zuma's statement was more of an opinion.

She said comparisons needed to be made between 2001, 2004 and 2012 to get an accurate picture or where the country was in terms of the income gap and inequality.

"My suspicion is that the gap has actually increased and not lessened," she said.

"A small percent of people control the wealth globally. South Africa cannot be an exception to that."

She made an example of Marikana where the income gap between the management and miners was big.

Community Works Programme

Of Zuma's statements that the ANC was not corrupt she said the party was well aware that the general elections were coming up and Zuma wanted to win favour with the workers.

"The transparency index, which measures corruption across the world, shows that corruption in South Africa is in fact growing and that we are actually close to Zimbabwe in terms of the state corruption. Since Zuma has taken power, the corruption index has increased."

UDM provincial chairperson Mongameli Bobani said the party was wondering what the basis of Zuma's statement on the wealth discrepancy was.

"Everyone, including the workers, knows that the gap is far too big ... if the president is promoting that the gap is not big then the UDM has a problem with that.

"We feel that the president is undermining the living conditions of South Africa. People in South Africa are becoming more and more poor and the rich are becoming richer."

Meanwhile, Zuma also used the rally to announce the creation of an extended Community Works Programme in the province.

Safety net

"Through this 600 people will get work," he said.

Zuma said Bizana, Port St Johns, Coffee Bay, Mthatha Mouth, Hamburg, Hole-in-the-Wall and Kidds Beach would benefit from the extended programme.

"The Community Works Programme has been designed to create a safety net for the unemployed workers."

He said members of Sauwu would benefit directly from the projects and that by 2013, 3 500 people would be registered with the programme.

The jobs through the programme would include tourism officials and coastal rangers. The coastal rangers would be trained in areas such as life saving and public safety.

"This is for the people. But we might not be able to do everything in one day," Zuma said.

Attending the event, Onela Mbatjoti, aged 25, said Zuma deserved his Nkandla homestead in KwaZula-Natal because he worked hard for it.

Even last week I had guys from treasury in my office and even they just shake their heads so please go and deny that fact to some brainless moron on some other continent. Just between you and me Mr. Zummer, stopping the word does not mean the cANCer will change their ways. In fact you know it will just improve the cANCers corrupt, racist and criminal ways. cANCer is not corrupt. What a joke!

I’m desperately wishing we had a Julian Assange who could expose the full extent of the lies that Zuma and his party tells their hapless followers. If they’d believe it is another story. Our hard-earned taxes - if spent responsibly and cleverly to uplift people and grow the economy – should by now have made a huge difference in the lives of the poor. But no. Check out the cars and houses, hotel bills, cost of flights, parties and flagrant spending of the ANC leaders. They live like kings while the majority of their followers scrabble in the dust for scraps. How do you bankrupt provinces and municipalities? Where do those billions go? Not to the tooth-fairy, that’s for sure. I believe that lies eventually pop out from under the best cover-up to bite you. Unfortunately it sometimes takes quite long and the damage in the interim is devastating. Millions of blacks are being shamelessly used and further disadvantaged by their own kind. The ultimate betrayal.

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-11-04 11:41

Copy & pasted from HZ's FB page. Here is a detailed breakdown of the state's expenditure on the President's residence at Nkandla spending: Die Burger (17 October) and City Press (21 October) put the total cost of the Nkandla upgrade project at R248 million. This figure includes: • R121 million to construction companies • R3 million for bullet proof windows • R9.23 million for a perimeter fence • R2.3 million for lift/s • R54 million has already been paid to consultants, architects, land surveyors, engineers and project managers • Thirty-one costly new buildings were constructed in the compound, with one contractor (who built six of them, see below) charging Public Works R8 million per building • A gate house, a gymnasium and guest rooms • An underground bunker, with a lift to ferry President Zuma between the main house and the bunker • A helipad • The installation of air conditioning systems at a cost of R1.5 million • R200 000 on lightning protectors for the thatched roofs In August 2010, public works told Parliament the project would cost R6.4 million. This upgrade has been undertaken despite massive upgrades to Zuma’s official residences in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town also having been undertaken since 2009. Payments to contractors started in December 2009 – seven months after Zuma was sworn in as president.

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-11-04 11:42

Continued... The final delivery date of the project is August 2013. The biggest beneficiary of the Nkandla upgrade by far has been businesswoman Thandeka Nene’s Bonelena Construction Enterprise and Projects, which scored two building contracts worth R33.4 million and R66 million, respectively. The R33.4 million contract was for “emergency work”, indicating the work did not go out on public tender. Bonelena’s second contract, the cost of which increased from R55 million to R66 million, was for the construction of “25 new buildings” at R2.6 million each. Moneymine 310 (an apt name!), a company owned by businesswoman Pamela Mfeka, was contracted to construct six new buildings at the compound at a cost of R47.6 million, meaning each building cost R7.9 million. It is still unclear exactly what expenses Zuma and his family will carry, but a Public Works document released earlier this year put the figure at R10.6 million. The Nkandla compound was built by Zuma in 2000. During the corruption trial of Schabir Shaik it was alleged that money from French arms dealer Thales was used to fund the building of the complex.

      Ollie - 2012-11-04 11:57

I wonder how many of those 15 million that have been taken out of poverty are Zuma's family and ANC associate's.

Corrupt , can only create jobs as per below. You have no idea Zuma , and your cadres just fall in line as they await there envelopes filled with reprinted banana republic notes. Perfect example , the regime propped up mango and SAA ( never ever had to be bailed out prior to 1994) to out last any other airline ( natinwide, 1time etc) here are some facts 1)QANTAS -32 500 employees with a total of 252 aircraft = 129 employees per aircraft 2)American Airlines – 87 897 employees with a total of 618 aircraft = 142 employees per aircraft 3)Delta Airlines – 106 216 employees with a total of 722 aircraft = 147 employees per aircraft 4)British Airways – 36 832 employees with a total of 238 aircraft = 154 employees per aircraft 5)United Airlines – 115 149 employees with a total of 710 aircraft = 162 employees per aircraft 6)South African Airways 55 500 ( increased by 30 800 since 1994 , wonder why - corrupt u say) )employees with a total of 58 aircraft = 957 employees per aircraft Now a corrupt regime airline it is SAA . It will be banked rolled by the regime to the hilt as after all its the ANC’s private taxi. Its another collapse waiting to happen.

      mark.richardson.3914207 - 2012-11-03 12:29

Margaret what you seem to ignore ( like cadres zuma etc) is the fact that the airports authority , so called sub conctrated ground handling ie: the swarm that surrounds a aircraft when it reaches its bay, are all within the SAA budget of employees. What well managed airlines do is sub conteract to companies like Swissport etc that are not connected to the airline hence the differance. but as i said its about creating jobs and keeping votes for those who have no real idea of the bigger corrupt picture.

If you can do that, I'll stop saying the ANC is corrupt, I can't speak for the millions of other South Africans though.

      james.hurley.1401 - 2012-11-03 12:55

that's a pretty terrible analogy, considering that calling a person fat is a kind of bullying (even if it is stating the truth) and is usually intended to humiliate the person being ridiculed, whereas complaints about corruption in the ANC are not bullying or intended to cause humiliation but are the expression of genuine concern.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-03 12:29

Fine, cementhead, we will call them crooks from now on.

  • mike.bleyenheuft - 2012-11-03 12:30

JZ, my little turtle-eyed, crooked prez, perhaps you're right! All these horrible stories about the corrupt ANC are probably just perceptions by the public. But you know what they say about perception? In the eye of the beholder, it is truth! Hand over the spy tapes and lets see if the perception changes.

  • neilpretorius83 - 2012-11-03 12:30

The head of the ANC's political school, Tony Yengeni, is a convicted criminal. ANC appointees and/or affiliates like Selebi, Shaik, Cele, Cwele (Cheryl) have all been convicted of crimes. ANC cronies looted Limpopo funds to such an extent that the province had to be put under administration. Between 2010 and 2012 SA slipped from 54th to 64th place on TPI's transparency scale. NYDA squanders millions on berets/parties instead of creating sustainable youth employment. Arms deal. Travelgate. Nkandla debacle. Mismanagement at SAA, Eskom, Aurora. When you look up 'corrupt' in the dictionary you will find a full-colour poster bearing the ANC logo.

  • mthunzi.mabombo - 2012-11-03 12:31

Which this goverment and this sellfish leaders the ruling party is losing million and millions of its supporter/members. Corruption is corruption Mr President there is no two abt it

      disillusioned.sa - 2012-11-05 13:09

I wonder if we can get the Haig court to look into the Swiss involvement. Where do these corrupt dipsticks put their money? Surely SARS would get them if they kept it in SA? Or do the Swiss wait for them to be assassinated and then keep the cash like they did to the Jews that 'disappeared' during WW2.

  • reg.nagel - 2012-11-03 12:32

Your a,liar!!!Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing!!!

denial is not just a river in Egypt

  • koos.vanzyl.98 - 2012-11-03 12:35

Mr Zuma - Please stop - you are showing your ignorance if you say anything.

  • Brad - 2012-11-03 12:35

I absolutely hate the ANC politicos...but one thing I do appreciate them for is the comic relief they deliver on an at least weekly basis.

  • Martha1234 - 2012-11-03 12:36

Well thanks for my Saturday laugh big man, you and Juju sure do know how to say some funny things.

  • andre.ackermann.14 - 2012-11-03 12:37

The more JZ is in denial the worse it becomes. Yet another example to illustrate how corrupt and brainless he is! The old, old fact, only liars believe in themselves!

  • jeremy.s.oconnor - 2012-11-03 12:37

    He is in denial.

      herman.kramer.988 - 2012-11-04 10:34

      No, he is simply CLUELESS!

  • neilpretorius83 - 2012-11-03 12:37

The opposite of 'pro' is 'con'. Thusly, it stands to reason that the opposite of African National Progress is African National Congress. Check mate!

  • wayne.faulds - 2012-11-03 12:38

........and pigs can fly Jacob. Now sit down and eat your breakfast.
