Johannesburg - Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau has been elected co-president of an organisation of global metropolitan cities, the Gauteng ANC said on Thursday.

"The ANC in Gauteng congratulates... Tau for being elected the co-president of the Metropolis, a global network of 138 metropolitan cities that share innovative ideas for urban sustainability," it said in a statement.

The ANC said the election announcement was made at the Metropolis 11th world congress in Hyderabad, India.

"The mayor's new role within the Metropolis is to lead the portfolio responsible for supporting access to basic services and social inclusion," it said.

"He has done a sterling job in the City of Johannesburg to deliver and uplift communities. His election is a clear indication that indeed the Johannesburg metropolitan is recognised throughout the world because of its intense programme to deliver on action plans.

"We will use his election as a source of inspiration, hope and strength to advance our goals especially towards 2016 local government elections."
