Tenders can help only a few - Jansen

2012-11-01 18:51

Bloemfontein - Government tenders and political friends can only help a few people to be successful, University of the Free State Rector Jonathan Jansen said on Thursday.

"Not everybody... will be so lucky. Most will have to work to be successful," Jansen told a Free State Youth Summit.

"Apologies, premier," Jansen told Free State Premier Ace Magashule, who was also attending the summit. "You will protect me under the circumstances."

Jansen said almost all the country's young people would have to work hard and undergo training or they would go nowhere.

He said if the youth did not make peace with South Africa's past the country was "screwed".

"We must live past our demons," he said.

If this could not be achieved, the country would always fall back on issues such as skin colour and language in a crisis situation.

He said South Africa's future was not for angry people, but citizens who could look past aspects such as class, colour and disability.

Jansen said more South Africans should learn Mandelian values (those of former president Nelson Mandela).

"Also, surround yourself with people who tell you everyday you need education and training," Jansen told delegates.

      sihle.miya1 - 2012-11-01 19:05

if we can leave Malema and focus on improving and helping the youth of today, South Africa can move in the right direction

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-01 19:15

I'll say it again: "Jansen for president!"

      MichelleDeAngelNot - 2012-11-01 19:32

@ Squeegee - Agreed. This is a man I'd vote for in a heartbeat.

      deborah.delport - 2012-11-01 20:03

ANC crooks are the only ones making money cause they re ripping the country off.

      tony.ezendam - 2012-11-01 20:25

Jansen for President, and Thuli Madonsela as his deputy. Lets get a government and cabinet staffed by knowlegable people. Hard workers with more than just honesty and common sense.

  • sihle.miya1 - 2012-11-01 19:03

That is true, the youth of today must learn to surround themselves with skilled people, if u wana be a doctor, visit doctors and get more exposure about their challenges and whatsoever, i support u on that one

      Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-02 09:11

Uguh uguh obe snigger! BEE & AA and OBE have come full circle. YOU supposedly educated persons Jansen are meant to KNOW these things in advance and advise those you guide so as to avoid having to learn the hard way and YOU HAVE ALL FAILED DISMALLY for more than 18 years as you have all headed backwards to tribal quintessence.

  • entreprenuerist - 2012-11-01 19:04

To my Fellow Youth Never Ever Think about Tenders as They Time waster and Focus on Your Books and Create Yourself a Future.

  • tumisang.kolobe - 2012-11-01 19:04

It's time elect people who can take forward this country, the struggle is now over lets allow he struggle heroes to please lead organizations like veterans and lets elect people with business acumen to take this county forward, emotions aside we are talking about our future here, politicians have failed us.we need new leadership

  • SharonE - 2012-11-01 19:05

Prof Jansen always speaks the truth, even if he says things people don't want to hear. Everybody in life is presented with at least one opportunity - recognising it for what it is, and making the best of it, that is the secret to success.

      tito.mario.927 - 2012-11-02 08:16

And the more you educate yourself, the more the opportunities come your way. For success though the other ingredient is hard work.

  • nkululeko.mkhize2 - 2012-11-01 19:14

We should have known from the beginning that the creation of tendering system meant a gravy train for these faaaat cats !

      art5SA - 2012-11-01 20:12

The HIGHER you are in the ANC... the more plentiful the TENDERS!!!!

  • bosveld.reaper - 2012-11-01 19:19

Wow, I must be of graduate calibre, I never went to varsity and I have been saying this for a very long time. Must have been my school education in the 70's and 80's that taught me these "pearls of wisdom". What exactly is it they teach in schools nowadays if not common sense?

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-11-01 19:32

And that few are all ANC connected.

  • nick.patsalos - 2012-11-01 19:41

Prof Jansen for president of SA!

      nhlanhla.mahlangu.7393 - 2012-11-01 20:16

      i would prefer juju

  • profesas1 - 2012-11-01 19:44

Tenders come as a package(since 99% of them are acquiref illegally). The package goes like, good life> fat bank account>hawks(when the tender goes sour after poor results)>corruption charges>good life taken>jail>heart problem(from stress and depression)>finally death. All this happens in a short space of time. So its better to arm yourself with education that will last for the rest of your life

      art5SA - 2012-11-01 20:13

Nah. after heart problem, the RELEASE from JAIL... and then the GOLF COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-01 19:49

      phillip.marchant.52 - 2012-11-01 20:42

Excellent stuff, Nhlanhla! Your party needs more like you. Don't fall for this counter-revolutionary claptrap that sellouts like Prof Jansen sprout forth. As one who is obviously an intellectual, of your own mind and not prone to racist inspired deceit, go forth and spread the truth about the benevolence of the ANC, it's resounding successes in governance, the burgeoning infrastructure, it's honest fiscal policies and the ever growing prosperity of it's followers. Amaaandla - er, where to?

      yrhonour.honour - 2012-11-01 20:47

excuse me i'm going to the toilet as i just ate a bowl of alphabet soup and i think my sh#t will give a better argument than yours!

      nhlanhla.mahlangu.7393 - 2012-11-01 21:30

sometimes you mst be a dogmatisist in life to avoid jumpin into conclusion too quickly. 1, after that incident @ufs i bliv he should've refrained himself frm that vacant (vice-chancellor), to support unity in diversity n non-racial S.A!\r\n2, u mention racism bt most white pupil they cnt 4giv JZ,Juju-for their mistakes, until that happens nobody will 4get abt apartheid n will never move 4ward as a country! this needs more than Jansen qualifications they are not gud enough to resolve it.

      nhlanhla.mahlangu.7393 - 2012-11-01 22:13

@all, common sense s not common to all of us.\r\nget over it there's no politician, no businessman n neither einsten can unite u its only the DNA of Christ Jesus that can fulfill that assignment to add on to that sumtimes too mch knowledge s vry dangerous for pupil lyk u s it makes u to be rebellious n not to know where to seek such answers!

      indianajohn - 2013-01-29 18:58

"too mch knowledge s vry dangerous" Well now I've heard it all.

  • mokoka3 - 2012-11-01 20:17

So you're saying we should take gov.business to whites and enrich them once again. No ways, the system won't change in your life time. My advice to you is\ if you don't want to die a bitter man, stay afar from tendering politics-this is too big for you, focus on what you do best\rest my case.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-01 20:41

Either they changed the story after you read it, or you don't know how to read. Nowhere in this article does it state what you claim it states. Maybe you should take your own advice and stick to what you know best, whatever that may be, but it sure as heck isn't reading anything correctly.

      yrhonour.honour - 2012-11-01 20:48

again - i'm going to the toilet as i just ate a bowl of alphabet soup and i think my sh#t will give a better argument than yours!

      tito.mario.927 - 2012-11-02 08:21

You have somehow navigated your way to a point where you can make a comment digitally on a networked computer. How in the world can you read the same article as everyone else, and come up with an analysis like the one you have just came up with.

  • neilpretorius83 - 2012-11-01 21:35

Back in '94-'99 the only people who really badmouthed the ANC were those on the far Right. Look at the list of ANC detractors today: Desmond Tutu, Jonathan Jansen, Mamphela Ramphele, Mosioua Lekota, Russell Loubser, Reuel Khoza, Right2Know, Section 27, the press, ratings agencies etc. What's more likely: that these are all just bitter 'counter-revolutionaries', or that there really is something rotten in the ruling party? Rather than doing some introspection, the ANC just digs in its heels whenever it's criticised, calling it 'misleading', 'racist', 'unfortunate' and 'unreasonable'. When we succeed we're all 'proudly South African', when we fail it's because of Verwoerd. People need to wake up and smell the damn coffee. Viva, South Africaaaargh!

  • vicki.malatse - 2012-11-01 22:22

The ANC is dependent on the uneducated blacks for survival, believe or not their not interested in making more black peolpe educated, that will be more like suicide

  • Greypatriot - 2012-11-02 06:24

Jonathan Jansen must host a week-long conference for the cabinet on this subject. The ministers that are so taken up with infrastructure investment as a solution for poverty and unemployment must hear what he has to say. He must tell the ministers that the nation cannot move forward by looking back.

  • eduard.marais.5 - 2012-11-02 07:09

  • nukki.green - 2012-11-02 11:22

  • thabangelvis.mohokare - 2012-11-05 08:41

Yes indeed the modus operandi in which tender system is operated will by no means benefit only those with political relations.
