ANC ready for Tlokwe - Mantashe

The ANC is ready for the Tlokwe by-elections despite some ward voting being postponed, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe says.WATCH

Potchefstroom - Three by-elections were under way in Tlokwe, North West on Wednesday.

Ward 6, 18, and 26 were being contested.

All three were previously held by the African National Congress but became vacant when the councillors were expelled from the party.

Ward six was being contested by the ANC's Japhta Monaisa, the Democratic Alliance's DA Johann Coetzee, and the Azanian People's Organisation's Lesego Malepe.

There was no independent candidate contesting the ward.

The DA and ANC set up tents outside the voting station helping voters check if they were registered.

DA councillor Leon Basson said about 60 people had voted in the first hour of the voting station being opened.

In July, the ANC expelled 14 councillors after its provincial disciplinary committee found them guilty on four counts of misconduct for participating in a motion of no confidence in Tlokwe mayor Maphetle Maphetle.

Maphetle was replaced by DA councillor Annette Combrink.

However, the ANC's national disciplinary committee later overturned the expulsions.

Despite this, eight of the councillors registered as independent candidates for the by-elections.

The Electoral Court in Bloemfontein ordered on Tuesday evening that five of the nine scheduled by-elections in Tlokwe be postponed.

This was after the court heard an application by five independent candidates who were disqualified from taking part in the by-elections by the Independent Electoral Commission.

A sixth by-election, in Ward 13, was earlier postponed after an out-of-court settlement was reached.
