Unearth more SA stories - ANCYL

2013-01-20 17:32

Johannesburg - The National Press Club should interact more with South Africans and unearth their stories, the ANC Youth League said on Sunday.

The organisation said it was concerned that the NPC decided that the rhino was more "precious than human life" when it named the rhino 2012 newsmaker of the year.

"While the ANCYL believes that the environment and animals need to be protected, it means that millions of South African human stories went untold in 2012," said spokesperson Thabo Kupa.

The NPC came under heavy criticism on Saturday after it announced rhino in South Africa as the 2012 newsmaker of the year.

In the year which saw 34 miners shot and killed in Marikana, the Limpopo textbook delivery saga, the expulsion of ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema and controversy over President Jacob Zuma's home in Nkandla, many were shocked by the press club's announcement.

People took to social networking site Twitter to vent their disapproval.

The rhino are far more precious than human lives. 6 billion people on earth, less than 25,000 rhino left surviving in the wild.

  • mashabajavulani - 2013-01-20 18:10

Really it does not make any sense to consider animals of which has been killed, of cause is a sin to do that. But when it comes to people its like when I've been robbed on the street where I can not identify the thugs, or I've been arrested for public drinkings on friday night of which I know I will be released on monday.

  • Tina.Tallahassee - 2013-01-20 18:26

This explains why the Rhino are being poached so freely. The Government DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE RHINO AT ALL!

  • Tina.Tallahassee - 2013-01-20 18:32

Proof that the ANC to NOT CARE about the Rhinos AT ALL. This is why they are being poached at the rate they are.

  • Calvin Miller - 2013-01-20 18:42

the general public have become so used to all the crap going on in this country that we have become used to it. i rather care more about the Rhino issue that all the other issues of 2012 although we should not ignore them lest we allow the ANC to think they can maintain th status quo

  • patrick.saunders123 - 2013-01-20 18:59

the problem being that when the stories are unearthed, the anc reverts to apartheid laws to suppress them.

  • christi.roestorff - 2013-01-20 19:17

I thought they'd be chuffed that all these government stuff ups were ignored by the press?

ar least the dont throw stones and burn cars...

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-21 07:39

Some children should be seen and not heard. Why ANCYL don't you tell the stories then?

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2013-01-21 08:21

So the ANCYL believes all stories must be about them and their fellow idiots, just goes to show their mentality. No thought for anything that affects the country and the attractions we have for tourism. Now had there been shark attacks or hippos that claimed the lives of their kinsmen those stories would have been acceptable. The slaughter of Rhino of the magnitude experienced over the past months is a very newsworthy story and draws attention to the plight of these animals and the people involved.

Is a Rhino worth more than a human. That you need to answer for yourself. Lets assume you could buy and sell humans like Rhinos. Lets assume you are a millionaire. How much would you pay for a Rhino? How much would for an human? Assuming that you knew either of them. Secondly, if you count how many humans have been murdered in this country for their cell phones or wallets and then the courts let the murderer off scot free. In many cases a murderer gets a R500 fine. If you take the average value of murder victims cell phones and wallets, then it is easy to assume that a human life is worth no more than R500. I think a Rhino is worth about 1 mil. From a person with a logical and mathematical mind.

Get a Life... there were many good and bad stories. Many people din't get the publicity they deserved. There can be only one "Top" story. And the Rhino saga is and was as important as the next story. Perhaps it was chosen as the top story because they could not decide which other scandal was more worthy... What was bigger news? Zuma, Malema, the miners???? Regardless of who or what was chosen, someone will be wining about it - because a large majority of South Africans are a bunch of cry babies who complain and wine and ultimately do nothing more than that.

  • siphiwe.ngidi.94 - 2013-01-21 10:23

people let us not have an "us and them" aproach about this story. we need to rally behind anti-poaching campaigns at the same time let us not do that at the expence of others, the Rhinos are being killed and they has been a newsbreak about China being linked to that and yet our government is inviting Chinese to be our important trade partners? on that same breath lets fight bad tendencies like inequality and corruption. on our way to do that lel us tell our stories as they are.

  • marie.antionette.583 - 2013-01-21 12:33

Yes, the Rhino is more precious than human life. So are dog's, and any other form of animal. A animal doesn't rob, murder and rape. A person cannot love thy neighbor anymore. cANCer doesn't do anything to protect our Rhino, not even their people. cANCer is strictly a ME ME ME ME Party.

Loyiso Gola said it best "If blacks want whites to care about their problems they need to stick something that looks like a Rhino horn on their face and run around outside"
