'Vavi has a lively imagination'

2012-05-06 10:55

Johannesburg - DA leader Helen Zille has denied claims that she tried to recruit Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi to her party.

"Zwelinzima certainly has a lively imagination. Next he’ll probably say I asked him to marry me," she said in a statement on Sunday.

"In all the many chats we have had over the years... I have never tried to recruit him to the [Democratic Alliance]. Maybe he wishes I had."

She said it was absurd, given their diverse approaches to growing the economy and creating jobs.

"If people disagree on their approach to South Africa's greatest challenge, it is impossible to absorb them into the same political party."

Vavi told the Sunday Times that Zille had "bugged" him to join her party at a football match.

He claimed Zille was preoccupied with recruiting him.

"She is very, very power-hungry because she has this mistaken view... that I can be recruited to the opposition ranks," he told the newspaper.

"She tried to recruit me, in person, to join the DA in the run-up to the local elections."

Vavi said he and the DA were like "water and paraffin" and he believed that Zille would take him on "at a personal level" because he had refused her advances.

I LOLOLOLOLOL .... VAVI... you have lied to the people of SA! You are just another attention seeking CONDOM COMRADE!!!! Maybe he is looking for a raise in the ANC CONDOM PARTY?

      anne.crewe - 2012-05-06 16:22

How do we know that Condom Comrade Vavi is lying ....... his lips are moving!

  • Peter - 2012-05-06 11:04

Vavi, just stay with the tolls,

  • Semi - 2012-05-06 11:06

Haaai... Vavi is very funny guy. I doubt if Mr zwelinzima is telling the truth.

      Charles Dumbwin - 2012-05-06 11:29

Tsotsi stop your white, stirrer, trolling. Your no-name-brand Facebook profile is typical of people who quickly create accounts, never stick around long, and just come onto forums like these to post stupid, troublemaking comments. grow up you white troll

      Tankiso Mogoje - 2012-05-06 12:50

And Zille is telling the truth?

  • George - 2012-05-06 11:06

Interesting. One politician accusing another of lying! But the public know better. Both must be lying. After SCAMRAL no politician will be able to fool the SA public again

      Smile - 2012-05-06 11:08

Goerge get your facts straight! Zille does not lie!!!

      siyadyosiba - 2012-05-06 11:17

@Smile, her excuse on the "refugee" remark was not a convenient created lie to salvage the situation. You are one of the comedians HAHAHAHAHA. Ever thought of stand-up comedy for alternative career? It will suit you well.

      George - 2012-05-06 11:22

Reasonable assumption with much imperical evidence: All politicians lie. Some tike awhile to get caught out. Fact: Zille is a politician Fact: Vavi is a politician Conclusion: very safe to conclude both are lying

      Smile - 2012-05-06 11:26

siyadyosiba - You are an idiot!!! There was nothing wrong with her refugee comment! Watch I say it: EASTER CAPE LEARNERS WHO FLEE THE EASTERN CAPE(ANC CONDOM PARTY) TO GET A BETTER EDUCATION IN THE WESTERN CAPE(DA) ARE REFUGEES OF THE ANC's DISGUTING CORRUPTION!!!

  • Gieljam - 2012-05-06 11:11

Vavi , good try seems you are trying to score points here. However best you do not join the DA , remember one member has already been said to be her tea girl and you don't want to be labeled her "slavi".

  • esethu3 - 2012-05-06 11:14

ZwelenZille fiasco; LoL the idea of HELEN trying to recruit a BLACK man who has so much power in South African politics, who also comes to be opposition on some other ANC political matters just suits Helen. Believe me, she tried.....

      Vic - 2012-05-06 11:40

How do know she tried, ignoramus? Be sure of your facts before you post crap. You're just another ANC rubbish!

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 12:13

esethu3, oh!my, you were present then at this meeting?. Foolish comment.

      esethu3 - 2012-05-06 12:53

LOL dis all you like.... Vavi joining the DA would be the best MOVE Helen would ever make and she knows that.Helen wants power, and one way she will get it is to get us BLACKS on her boat. She will try what ever tactic she has on her books and over the past week if you are not a passive SA citizen u would have seen that she got close with VAVI; now I dont know what happened because they have been on each others throat for almost like 3weeks now. This today is just apparent. If people can believe HELEN when she says she never tried to recruit Vavi; then tell me why should we not believe Vavi when he says helen tried to recruit him? we all dont know the truth. But with your political observation and knowledge about DA's political standing and what it wants in South Africa, believing VAVI is not absurd. And hey, NO hate or angry comments people. we're all are entitled to our opinion. U must remember if u view differ from other people that doesn't make you right. I then urge u not to behave like kids because u are now more angry than a Political Science 20 year old Student making political statement based from his lectures and what he has been taught at UCT about politicians some of us dont rely on the media

  • Meshack Letswalo - 2012-05-06 11:24

Comics for amusement before Mangaung. Zille, continue with your march to Cosatu House whether you proposed love to Vavi or not.

  • georgebrightons - 2012-05-06 11:25

Before local government elections Vavi once said\One day we will say President Zille\ No wonder why Cosatu is divided about the endorsement of the current leadership for re-election in Mangaung. Let's hear the spy tapes now. Madam Zille forget, Anc will rule S.Africa forever. Madam Zille you are free to join Anc now.

      Smile - 2012-05-06 11:32

georgebrighton - I love how some people respect Zille so much they alway put MADAM before her name! As it should be! She is a repectable woman!

      Smile - 2012-05-06 12:08

georgebrightons - I would hardly call your world modern. Howver... SIR goergebrightons... I do hope you and your fellow ANC CONDOM COMRADE rot in jail!

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 12:15

They are probalby endorsing Zuma and now need to take the attention away from that disaster.Wonder how much they will earn by pushing Zuma's car?.

      Piet - 2012-05-06 13:09

      Ynot ou do

  • Stefaans - 2012-05-06 11:25

Tsotsi,.... Have you not noticed the results of , # power to the people. Corruption, fraud, poverty, poor service delivery,( not according to Condom comrade Zuma)Murder, rape, no moral standard, no educational standard, no prosperity. I believe you are still one of the "people" without power, and money.

      Charles Dumbwin - 2012-05-06 11:30

See my comment above. He's a white teenager with a quickly-created facebook profile, just to post stupid comments. Ignore the idiot

  • George - 2012-05-06 11:28

People must stop over committing. DA is a party like the ANC, with a different agenda. DA is full of politicians. When (notice I didn't say if) they come to power they will be corrupted and they will become paranoid. Not all, but quite few. Power corrupts. That's why no matter what party is in power effective democracy requires a strong opposition, honest public servants and a VERY vigilant and questioning public. DA let loose, will I predict, become just like another ANC. But having said that let's all support them while they are good!

  • Henry - 2012-05-06 11:29

Whether she did or not, that isn't important. what politicians do in their spare time and private life, why should it draw a public eye. It might be true, for example we ( the society) were amazed learning that the leader of the newly formed, SADECO is now a member of the DA. who knows who recruited him there. It's really not important. Politics, a dirty game.

  • Henry - 2012-05-06 11:30

    Hands off from Vavi

  • Ian - 2012-05-06 11:33

I think Vavi has a soft spot for DA and now fears the ANC, Cosatu and SACP have noticed it. He needs to come out of the closet and declare his support for the Madam. He can be useful over there.

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-06 11:45

She needs someone to carry her bag.

  • Glyn - 2012-05-06 11:37

Da and cosatu are more like the DA's Rolls Royce to cosatu's rollerblades!

      Smile - 2012-05-06 11:42

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-05-06 11:42

I wish Zille can leave Vavi alone. Because Vavi is doing his job fighting for the workers rights not according their colours but as long as is worker. @Zille please look after your polical job. Because people of SA know

      Smile - 2012-05-06 11:48

VAVI IS THE ANC'S PUPPET! Just like malema!

      Jean - 2012-05-06 11:52

Dude its the other way around... Vavi doesn't care about the workers, if he did, more would have been done to provide jobs... There is a plan provided by the DA that can make our economy grow far more than 3% and more job opportunities created, why haven't Cosatu look into that if they care about the people so much.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 12:17

      Keep dreaming.

      georgebrightons - 2012-05-06 14:28

Even if Vavi could join DA. The masses will continue to vote Anc. Vavi knows very well if he joins the DA, the spirits of Albert Luthuli, Chris Hani, Oliver tambo n etc, will haunt him. All the masses are afraid the spirits will haunt them.

      Nigel - 2012-05-07 08:07

@kasper, Vavi is destroying jobs, he only protects his membership income, he also does nothing for the unemployed, there is no training program or skills programe given by Cosatu to help unemployed people get jobs, the DA IS creating jobs, or is trying to, but Cosatu is trying to stop this, you say people know, what do you know, nothing it seems, get the facts & stop believing in lies, or do you want to be brainwashed all your life.

  • Terry - 2012-05-06 11:49

Geez Vavi - are you so desperate for some attention you will come out with something as pathetic as that. Is this part of your campaign for higher office in the ANC before the Manguang conference - i.e. "if you don't make me the vice president, then I will take Cosatu and join the DA!" Nice try bud - but stick to the Tolls issue, you're more likely to get somewhere with that one.

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-05-06 11:58

Helen zille my dear why do you bother yourself by replying to that clown called zwelinzima vavi, open minded people like me we know that there's nothing like that zwelinzima vavi is just a attention seeker, I myself used to support the so called people's parties(ANC,COSATU and SACP) but what have they done since they took power nothing productive except of making corruption and nepotism the orders of the day instead of service delivery, I switched to DA now and yes the ANC can win the 2014 general elections but 2019 ones I doubt very much that the ANC will be in power.

      Mtshezi Yonk'insipho Iyawasha Mkhize - 2012-05-06 14:11

Heheheheheheh, Dream on Sir. Ur optimism is commendable....

  • Andrew - 2012-05-06 12:01

Now we know just how low the ANC will go for its agendas. Sick, criminal, corrupt and without any moral fibre whatsoever!!!!

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-06 12:04

The trouble is no one here will believe Helen and everyone will believe Vavi, that is if you belong to the ANC troll club.

      georgebrightons - 2012-05-06 14:34

Let's wait 4 de spy tapes Jacqui. In 2014 Anc will win all de provinces including Western Cape. Join Anc now

  • siyadyosiba - 2012-05-06 12:06

Unnecessary flurry of contestation between Vavi and Zille. Both are just attention seekers. Can you please give them a private room. They surely have something the wanna sort out.

  • Nkosinathi - 2012-05-06 12:12

    Attention seeker comrade Vavi

  • Johannes Nkosi - 2012-05-06 12:13

I think Vavi should accept this calling, their views are the same, I hope they can do better for the poor South African .

  • kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-05-06 12:15

Sorry to say but I tend to believe Vavi on this one. Zille has proven herself to be just as opportunistic as Zuma and she just uses people to further herself. Viva Vavi, down with Zille!!!

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 12:19

Another troll. Media 24 must have a laboratory to breed them.

  • Themba - 2012-05-06 12:47

Vavi is probably trying to blackmail the ANC into giving him a ministerial position. Between giving Vavi the ministry of labour and allowing him to be wooed by DA, the ANC is likely to give in to his blackmail. You cannot beat the crooks, join them Vavi.

  • Tendayi - 2012-05-06 12:55

Whats the emotions Zille? There is nothing wrong with recruiting members of the opposition. Its not an offence. And certainly not immoral. It shows that Zille has a bigger political picture by persuading useful minds to join DA. But to evoke emotions and rage because Vavi has told the media that he was asked to join DA is devoid of what I called a bigger political picture! Zille was supposed to say "NO i never asked Vavi to join us. Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong asking Vavi, JZ, Tkyo, Cyrial or Juju to join the DA because its time that their brains may be put to proper use". This would have been a better media statement from Zille. In all fairness, its not news to publish that a member of the opposition was asked to join the other party!

  • Erna - 2012-05-06 12:56

I told you Vavi was delusional! Can't imagine that Helen Zille would bring something like that up at a soccer match nogal. I know who's fibbing!

      Themba - 2012-05-06 13:06

Agreed. It is inconceivable that such a matter can be raised in competition with Vuvuzelas at a soccer match. Vavi has merely expressed his secret wish to join the party that seems to be eating away at the corrupt ANC's constituency one bite at a time, seeing that he has not been invited to join the feeding trough yet. Hopefully his black mail works and he join the crooks so that the workers on whose backs he has been riding can see the true Vavi once and for all

  • Stephen - 2012-05-06 12:56

What is the fuss? I thought any legitimate political party would try to recruit others: persuade then you have common cause! I wouldn't expect otherwise. How else do parties grow?

      Yup @Piet - you are 100% correct!

  • esethu3 - 2012-05-06 13:02

the COMMENT section on New24 has allowed many people to act as if they are clever and call our leaders MORONS Helen is our Leader, disregarding political affiliations and she has done a lot for this country or should I say the Republic of Western Cape. VAVI on his corner has also done tremendous work for South African workers... So please can we stop calling them morons; because that makes you a MORON.

  • Cornelius - 2012-05-06 13:39

If there are blind supporters, they are found on this site. Some people are loyal to other human beings to the extend of losing their freedom of thinking. It reminds me of how Hitler came to power. People were so loyal to him to the extend of being taken as a god. Neither Vavi nor Zille is an angel. We don't know who is saying the truth. Moreover neither the ANC nor DA is perfect. We have heard tender scandals involving both parties. Political parties fight for power and not to improve people's lives.

always presuming urself to be smarter than anyone else dom a*se, Zille is desperate for power and knows that black ppl r the majority, and i dont blame her for trying to get an influential black man on her boat, it shows vision and initiative something that is imperative in politics, but now she has to save face like u dom a*se

      Brett - 2012-05-06 16:26

  • brainbowgold - 2012-05-06 15:56

Vavi is a trade-unionist. Fact. Who is power-hungry? Look at the history of trad-unionists around the world and they their common denominator is their hunger for power. This and his faulting Twitter, a simple communication medium, has certainly damaged his reputation. Very disappointing indeed. The alliance is looking even weaker now. In any case, the vision of the DA is different to that of COSATU. Vavi's cheep shot will likely backfire on him.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-06 20:28

I really don't think you can talk about the black pipe where Ms Zille is concerned. With the prez having impregnated more than 13 women resulting in 20 something children while he was married to at least 2 other women? Let's talk about his morals!

  • Nigel - 2012-05-07 07:53

MR Vavi, you my friend are the one thats power hungry, lets see in the next 4 years how you manipulate your way into the ANC Govt, & try to take over in 2017. Your greed for power has overtaken your principles, thats why you put your membership income before job creation. Zille has seen through your plan & all you can do is verbally attack her, but you are ANC & that is the ANC way, no action or delivery - just talk & bad mouth the opposition.

  • viyonhammond - 2012-05-07 11:01

But they went to the courts together to stop tolling? It seems water and paraffin, when mixed, can create wonders and what needs to be done... No one really cares whether Vavi joins or not... at least not me :) Maybe Vavi's said this to the media to see what the reaction of the masses would be before he decides to make a move... If he was bugged to join - why talk about it? So what...
