Website calls for leadership change

2012-11-07 22:09

Johannesburg - A website calling for change in the ANC leadership was launched on Wednesday.

The website, named "Forces of Change" listed five reasons why change was needed.

"We need change because South Africans do not have confidence in the leadership of President Jacob Zuma," Forces of Change's website read.

"We need a leadership that will lead the ANC towards quality and durable change, towards an ideal as set out in the Freedom Charter, which remains its strategic vision and mission.

"We need a leadership that will regain the confidence of all Africans on the African continent.

“We believe that this will be best obtained by the following leadership structure, which is tried and tested and open to scrutiny."

The website's preferred candidates for the party's top six were: Kgalema Motlanthe for president, deputy president Mathews Phosa, national chair Thandi Modise, secretary general Fikile Mbalula, deputy secretary general Thenjiwe Mthinthso and treasurer general Tokyo Sexwale.

The ANC is holding its national elective conference in Mangaung in December where President Zuma would be standing for a second term.

Motlanthe had been nominated by some in the party but it was not yet clear if he would accept the nomination.

Nominations for the ANC's leadership would officially close on 26 November.

According to Forces of Change the website would "provide honest and unbiased information for the use of the branches".

Online debates would also be held on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Its Twitter handle was SaveANC.

It was not clear who was behind the creation of the website.

ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza said the party had not seen the website.

"[However], there is no website that can serve as a substitute to the role of the ANC branches," he said.

"Anybody who wants to influence branches of the ANC through websites is undermining our internal democracy."

Khoza said anyone who used these types of platforms would not succeed.

"The branches know the role they have to play."

How will this change anything? What could they Possibly do to change the mind set, ethics and values of the masses. And at what pre arranged date will the LEADERS abandon their corrupt ways?

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-07 23:47

Anything with Sexwale is going to go down the pan anyway, Motlanthe is too much of a yes man to be a decent leader. Phosa endorses that moron Malema, so his judgement is questionable, as is the randy little bugger Mbalula. Sorry, but none of these people inspire any confidence in me.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-11-08 07:03

a case of re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. More of the same - the ANC cabal trying to get another yes-man in because Zuma proved too much of a loose cannon. Why not someone like Trevor?

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-11-08 07:40

We all know the Xhosa Nostra runs the show in the ANC - They picked Zuma because they thought he would be easy to manipulate. But he has now become a liability, so they are pushing for Motlanthe.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-11-08 09:22

Yeah, if the website said "Thuli Modonsela" as president I might give it some support.

The flies change but the Sh.....T is the same.

  • No.You're a handbag - 2012-11-07 22:58

We need a party OTHER than the African National Corruption! The ONLY change that will make any difference to SA now is to get rid of their racist, facist, corrupt, inept butts, and put a REAL government in place. Shuffling one underqualified, thieving idiot into the place of another isn't a change. It's a game of musical chairs - and we don't need more of their stupid games.

  • michael.jackwood - 2012-11-07 23:04

80% of branches in Limpopo need Zuma back, Motlanthe Deputy/Cyril if the deputy accept nomination, Gwede, Mbethe, Duarte and Mhkize Zweli. These so called forces of change website is an attempt by confused fellows, That PEC in Limpopo endorsed their prefered top six without branches mandate.

  • thulanit3 - 2012-11-08 02:23

Im familiar with the list, guess who? ANCYL.

  • Sibonakaliso Mthembu - 2012-11-08 03:28

i think jz is quite lucky , whoever tries to act against him always give people more reasons why he should serve a second term.

  • piet.boerie - 2012-11-08 03:49

So not a call for good governance or transparency but just a leadrship change. No change in anything other than JZ. I smell Juliass behind this. Cadres are idiots and are responsible for this mess by not exercising their democratic right for change but same same till jesus comes. When Jesus comes there will be nothing left and you will all be migrating to Zambia, Mozanbique or Botswana. People fought and died for democracy so use it fools

      piet.boerie - 2012-11-08 03:49

So it does not matter the colour of the boot on your neck.

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-11-08 06:04

In his 1st term jacob fleeced us tax payers of R250m for his palace in nkandla , what will he want if he gets a 2 nd term , maybe a helicopter for the helipad or a holiday palace in cape town

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-11-08 06:21

Motlanthe is being coy about throwing his hat in the ring. He is letting others do the talking for him, but does not have the courage to speak for himself. This leads me to two conclusions: he is not trustworthy and he does not have a backbone. How can we have faith in a man who does not seem to know what he wants? He is clearly playing politics by wheeling and dealing in the shadows. Hell, anyone will be better than JZ, but these are serious concerns about Motlanthe as well.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-11-08 06:49

@ least someone is doing something. Unlike those who critisize without the basis of acting on something other than to ridicule names, colour and people. That is the effectiveness of technology...

  • Cyril Harold Mtsweni - 2012-11-08 06:52

How can one claim to be impartial when trying to influence people to act in a specific predetermined manner. Please go to your dictionery to verify your choice of words. We are not that naive!

  • WvdWesthuizen - 2012-11-08 08:43

It's funny that the website isn't even hosted in Africa... :)

  • talana.malherbe - 2012-11-08 08:45

We need to seriously think about this. Zoomer is corrupt BUT, the people in power in the ANC put him there and they KEEP him there. They are turning a blind eye against the corruption and lying. They are all tremendously rich while you and I are struggling. Mothlanthe is too much of a Malema fan. We all know Malema is also not practicing what he is preaching. He is filthy rich and very corrupt, no different from Zommer just on a smaller scale. Can SA not for one day vote for people who will actually make a difference to our everyday lives? How many years is voting and everything else going to be about black and white? Is our hate or intolerance for each other purely because of skin colour bigger than our humanity and will to prosper? If so, I give up and hang my head in shame!

      emile.marais - 2012-11-08 09:58

If all there is to South Africa is racial hatred then I give up too.

  • Hasani P - 2012-11-08 08:56

When we talk leadership, we mean leadership who will not polarize the society. Leadership who have a shared vision with the country. People who do not talk racism but help people to overcome stereotype based on race. We can no longer use the race card to stay in power when we had the power to change things for 18 years. Leaders must unite the people and create better opportunities for everyone . Rights without obligations must be eliminated. Our people expect too much from government because the leaders do not create opportunities for them to realize their dreams. We need to move away from the politics of the 18th century. The world has changed so much.

      barnie.huysamer - 2012-11-08 10:43

Well said Hasani. The future is in our vote. Consider what your vote has done for you in the past 18 years. If your situation has not changed for the better, maybe it's a good idea to change your vote.

  • SMIL3Y - 2012-11-08 09:11

Lol. ANC members become enemies and ANC enemies become members. That's all the ANC is good for, going in circles.

  • auntie.lebo - 2012-11-08 09:37

    No I say Trevor Manuel!!

  • George - 2012-11-08 09:53

The ANC can go a long way without you. You are all bent on destabilizing the party for your own selfishness. Answer these questions before accusing zuma of enriching himself. Where does Malema get his riches (knowing he does not possess a tertiary qualification)? Is it not clear that it all form corrupt activities? You are not going to fool anyone one. Zuma has to be re-elected in order to keep vultures at bay. Polokwane is the worst run province because Malema has a hand in running the province. The ANCYL has lost relevance because Malema is the president.
