Johannesburg - Cederberg Mayor Jonas White has been suspended from the ANC after a disciplinary process found him unfit for public office, The Sowetan reported on Friday.

Chairperson of the Western Cape African National Congress's disciplinary committee, Fezile Calana, said White sexually harassed deputy mayor Lorna Scheepers.

White "continuously and persistently [sent] her text messages of [an] explicit and sexual nature" between August 2011 and October last year.

According to the report, the messages apparently included several pictures of White's erect penis.

The committee also found that he verbally assaulted Scheepers and emotionally abused her during council and ANC caucus meetings, causing division and undermining the municipality's integrity.

White also allegedly sent text messages of a sexually provocative nature to two girls aged 15 and 16.

Calana said the committee also found White guilty of taking a R60 000 bribe from a contractor to the municipality.

Police investigations of the sexual harassment allegations were underway.

White had 21 days to appeal, and would be removed from his position as mayor at the next council meeting.

The Star reported that the committee found White should be suspended from the party for five years.
