Winnie 'wrong to criticise Zuma'

2012-07-23 10:20

Johannesburg - Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is not a saint and was wrong to criticise President Jacob Zuma's polygamous lifestyle, said deputy communications minister Stella Ndabeni, according to a report on Monday.

Ndabeni took to social media and slated Madikizela-Mandela's latest criticism of Zuma's multiple marriages, the Sowetan newspaper reported.

She wrote on Facebook how former SABC CEO Dali Mpofu represented expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema in his disciplinary hearing.

"Life can be interesting. Dali Mpofu represented Julius Malema in the NDC [national disciplinary committee] hearings, Mam' Winnie has always seen a great leader like Madiba in Malema, and now the mother of our nation sees immorality in Zuma... who is a saint between the two of them?" wrote Ndabeni.

Ndabeni's statement came after Madikizela-Mandela in an interview said one could not advise the youth to stick to one partner while the president had multiple wives.

The interview will be aired on September 5.

This chick has always been a trouble maker. I have no respect for this woman. Even Madiba wanted nothing more to do with her.

      eddy.deepfield - 2012-07-23 10:36

Charles - as normal you are out of tune in this one. Winnie is one hundred percent correct in criticizing Zuma. The whole world does. Or do you think Zuma's polygamous lifestyle is normal and admirable.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-07-23 10:46

I don't support Zuma's philandering either way, but I still can't stand Winnie who holds hands with Mama Malema and causes trouble wherever she goes.

      rbphiri - 2012-07-23 10:57

Winnie should've spent her 67 minutes shooting herself 67 times.

      rbphiri - 2012-07-23 10:59

I don't condone polygamy but winnie is just sour that no one invited her to the presidential orgy.

  • shimeAschendorf - 2012-07-23 10:32

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-07-23 10:37

The problem in SA is that we have double standards and laws are applicable when it suits us. The way people attack Zuma because he has 5 or whatever number of wives is rather dull. Polygamy is enshrined in our constitution and so are gay marriages. I am not a fan of both but just because both acts are justified by our constitution I will never attack anyone for choosing either lifestyle. If anyone attacks gay lifestyle, you will be crucified on this forum! So why not give polygamy the same respect you want gay marriages to get, stop with your hypocrisy. If polygamy is wrong so is gay marriage!

      Alfjoe - 2012-07-23 10:47

I wonder on wat basis do they hate polygamy, on the other side they talk abt democracy, respect the constitution. If their arguments are based on the bible, i dont remember anywhere written pple of same sex should mary. We knw the wives of the president, but hw many of you who have more that 1 ladies that your first wife dont even knw? Who is judging you?

      ndira.mtyenene - 2012-07-23 10:53

wow Lerato thank you...we need more south africans like you

      ambauli - 2012-07-23 11:26

It's not the polygamy that's the problem. It's the fact that he continues to have unprotected extra-marital sex. In our AIDS climate that is severly irresponsible in a leader.

      patson.nedzamba - 2012-07-23 11:29

Yes,poligamy is enshrined in our constitution, but Zuma is a philanderer- cum-poligamist. He makes babies out of wedlocks and then marry the women to hide behind the concept.Poligamist marry and have children, eg Swazi king.

  • chiepner - 2012-07-23 10:37

Yes Winnie might have her flawes but so do all of us. People tend to forget that she was at the forefront of the apartheid struggle and I tend to think she still to today cant let go of some of the hatred and anger that was borne out of those dark days. That said - ma Winnie has the right to critisize and support whom ever she wants. Even if its not the current SA President and for our politicians to critisize and scorn everyone who does this smacks of a "Mugabe" type of regime that protects the holy cow even if its detrimental to an entire nation. Winnie has an opinion and she can share it just like Zuma and even Malema has the right to do so. She is one of those that actually fought tooth and nail for us to have this privladge and yes sometimes its a double edged sword. The wrong thing the current "Holy Cows" administration can do is think they can silence or prevent Winnie from expressing herself and voicing her opinion, because if there is ONE thing history told us is that Winnie is a fighter and she will not silently bow to anyone. Be carefull not to desturb the wrong rock. You just might get bitten by a snake.

I would like to give winnie the POOH some of her own medicine...were are those necklaces and match sticks again??? Live by the sord, die by the sord!!!!

      Cate - 2012-07-23 14:02

Those were indeed terrible, terrible times. We do not want to live in those times again. Many people and young people were killed and there was terrible violence. I have an admiration for Winnie in that she does express her opinion and does not simply "shut up" despite her "terrible" history. I sometimes wonder, had I been in her shoes, how would I have behaved in her situation? Who knows, maybe I would have behaved far worse?.

Without any offence mam Winnie is lowering her dignity by making inflamatory statements which are in direct contrast to the SA constitution. Everybody is free to exercise his choice in life including polygamy. Unlike senior citizens who commit adultery and infidelity. President Zuma is an open polygamist. We look up to all the anc veterans as examples to the younger generation these developments dissapoints us.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-23 11:45

Thats it patrick keep practicing it. Have multiple wives & multiple offspring even if most of those that do cannot afford it. Let the que's for govt grants get even longer, suck up the tax payers money, after all it is a part of your culture ! Seems like poverty really does " begin @ home " neh !

      patson.nedzamba - 2012-07-23 11:53

Zuma is a philanderer before he is poligamist. He father children with girlfriends and marry them to save his face afterwards. All the women he married after he became the president were the mothers of his children. morally, u marry and have children. Culture is not static. Pls change with times. Poligamy has since become dangerous to practice. You will die young by blindly following the spear.

Maybe we need not forget that our constitution allows poligamy just like it approuves of gay rights and abotion. If we talk about morals it must be spelt out that whose morals are we talking about. Lastly it would serve our leaders well to deal with politics not personalities.

      kent.paulsen.79 - 2012-07-24 06:40

It could be in the constitution and it could be a custom but if you want to go that way, PAY YOURSELF, they are not our (RSA) wives. Why must we pay for your socalled rights? First Lady agreed but the others are your own responsibility. Don't make your custom my responsibility.

At issue here is not the individual personalities, nor is the truth/appropriateness of what anyone has said. The real issue here is freedom of expression within the confines of the law. Whatever your views regarding Madikizela, Malema, Zuma, or Ndabeni....they all have a right to express their opinions (within the law) BUT none have the right to try to suppress the opinions of people who do not agree with them.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-23 17:11

I think it's legal under our constitution and while it is patriarchal and strange one shouldn't hate it. Sadly in Zuma's case it is less about polygamy and more about whetting his spear with any woman who is willing and able without taking safety precautions. Lead by example - get sterilised. After all how many children can one really have and afford today? As a woman I think that there may be some merit to this as the sister wives can help one another with the child rearing duties and it also takes the burden off those who no longer want more children or sex. Perhaps that is why he strays - because his wives won't put out for him any longer cos they're scared of contracting AIDS so he HAS to look outside his polygamous culture? It can't be easy having however many wives gang up on you. You could get very lonely even while surrounded by your wives.

Since Jacob Zuma was alleged that he raped friend daughter, it becomes very sensitive to South African people to express their view about his behaviour, Every time when somebody criticise the president personal behaviour some politician get an opportunity to be in the lime light by attacking who ever said something about him, Tutu is one of those who suffered attack by criticizing Zuma, I don’t know this woman and she has never done anything constructive in our life except that she is a politician and now she goes extreme to attack winnie ,yes public know that winnie not a sait and zuma neither, Zuma he is holding our office and his behaviour affects our lives and should be normal to criticize him. hence he will be critised, we don’t have to be divided by Jacob Zuma or any other politicians, truth need to be told.

UMama Winnie Mandela must now focus on preaching what is good ubuntu to us all. Her fixation with who owns the ANC is starting to rub me the wrong way. She must not point fingers. Is she not the one who proposed that Ntate Thabo Mbeki shud rule for a certain tym and thereafter abdicate for Umsholozi, when the logical thing wud have been to let the process unfold at Polokwane 2007, like it eventually did? Maybe she is seeing Stompie Seipei when she looks at Julius Malema, and we all know how that ended. This sense of entitlement is the rot that bedevils all of us, and her slip is showing.

Hell for once winnie did something right if only to mention the situation about multiple wives and the example it sets for the youths. Now she must start educating malema and lamola in the right direction, not the wrong one like she's been doing these couple of years. She also needs to take responsibility for her own actions in the past and say sorry for the people that she has harmed, before any person will be able to continue believing her. She is just as much at fault as the present government!
