Zille points to good work in Western Cape

2012-11-12 17:07

Johannesburg - The Western Cape government's work in ensuring excellent service delivery shows in the Census 2011 data, Premier Helen Zille said on Monday.

"I am very pleased with the data which shows that the Western Cape is a top performer in the provision of basic services," Zille said in a statement.

"The Western Cape also has the lowest unemployment rate in the country and the highest number of people with access to education."

Zille received the census report from statistician-general Pali Lehohla on Monday.

The Census 2011 showed that 99.1% of residents in the Western Cape had access to piped water, 91.1% had refuse removal, 93.4% electricity and 96.9% had toilet facilities.

A total of 29.3% of the province's working population was unemployed. The province had the lowest unemployment rate in South Africa, said Zille.

The population in the Western Cape had also increased by 29%.

"[This] suggests that we will need more resource allocation and stronger focus on informal settlement upgrading to ensure decent basic living conditions for as many people as possible," she said.

The population growth meant that government, business, civil society, communities and citizens needed to redouble their efforts to "go green".

"Our society needs to start moving from a lifestyle of conspicuous consumption to one of essential consumption," said Zille.

"We all need to recycle more, we need to use more public and non-motorised transport and we need to stop water waste that happens through tap and pipe leaks."

She said there needed to be a shared responsibility in the province to ensure a green economy was built.

I agree fully with the Premiers comments and commend the DA on a showcase province. Now as you have rightly pointed out in the next budget lets see dramatic resorce allocation to removing all those shacks, building homes and more importantly NOT allowing more shacks to be built.

      chris.debeer1 - 2012-11-12 17:45

      Semon you are useless!!!

      hendrik.verwoerd.94 - 2012-11-12 17:52

I would like to ask the madam why you did not spend the money that was supposed to be used for houses for the poor in several areas. I will name them: Morkel Cottage in Strand, Caledon and Plettenberg Bay. Tell everyone why you failed to build the houses for "coloured people". I know this message will be deleted because you do not like criticism.

      semenatenate. HUH?

      kala.bafazi - 2012-11-12 18:00

No need to point, we can see:)

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-12 18:09

The ANC suporters don't want to see this figures and they don't care about them as long they can keep the hands inside of the cookie jar.

      charlesbronson.bronson - 2012-11-12 18:45

Give this province to the corrupted thief's in the cANCer party and it will end up just like the corrupted: Eastern Cape Free State Gauteng KwaZulu-Natal Limpopo Mpumalanga The Northern Cape North West I stay in one of the above mention province but the Western Province is the cleanest province in the country! FACT!

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-11-12 18:54

Hendrik. Being from Plett I've seen the black and coloured townships explode into well serviced villages under the leadership of the DA. But with the huge influx of people from the EC it seems a near impossible task house every one of them. If the ANC led EC could take better care of its residents there wouldn't be a influx at all now would there.

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-11-12 19:36

Oh dear the ANC trolls are out in full force. Take your heads out of the sand guys, really now. You don't see Zille squandering hundreds of millions of taxpayers' money on her private residence or on a multitude of husbands and illigitimate children.

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 20:11

Howzit, SS! Opposition is good, one can point out the others in-capabilities and by that i mean the ANC.

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 20:38

@SS, take it easy with Johnny boet.

      Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-12 21:38

@Hendrik - it might be a bit like the following link in that nations circumstance because of all the eastern cape unannounced nor prepared for refugees in the Capes! More were bussed in by the thieving party and its league of 'downed pants' youth.

  • Billy - 2012-11-12 17:15

recycle more indeed! break up old plastics etc. and add to the tar in the roads for example. put it in the paint on the roads too, it makes the paint coarse so vehicles grip better, instead of that slippery snot like paint in the rain. they do it in the UK, even their trains are made from recycled materials...

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-12 17:24

The DA run Western Cape is more like a "Bolt of Lightning" rather than a ray of light - to the rest of the country! Congratulations for 2011 and be sure that the next forthcoming years will only reflect even better result. How can opposing party's and people that threaten to undermine and destabilize this example of perfection, be jailed long term?

      jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-11-12 19:21

Our government hates the WC, it will do anything to undermine it and destroy it, it puts them all to shame. Congratulations to our excellent civil servants in the WC - keep going you make us proud.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-12 19:43

Having read all the comments, it's sickening to see the hatred in some people. Zille did not commission this report, no matter how you twist it, the DA runs a decent organisation which produces results. You can point out that 9% don't have waste collection, that homes aren't being built in your area, that toilets aren't enclosed etc.etc.etc. What you can't dismiss is the fact that under the DA there have been massive strides ahead in terms of service delivery, homes built, jobs created, education provided. 29% are unemployed, there was a 29% increase in population, one could argue (wrongly) that if not for the increase, the unemployment figure would be zero. The DA is not perfect and still has a long way to go, but give credit where it's due. Why not just say well done and then ask your local government why they are unable to provide the same services to at least the same number of people. Helen Zille and her party deserve a pat on the back for this, but all the ANC supporters can do is point out the few shortcomings and use racist comments. Try looking at your own leaders for a change and ask why they are so far behind in terms of service delivery.

  • morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 17:25

Maybe, i should refugee to the WC. It must be nice to be part of a province that works!

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-11-12 17:58

That's you own body odor you're smelling . Do you even understand your own post...unintelligible drivel from a depleted gene pool.

      willie.botha.9480 - 2012-11-12 18:12

No semonatenate is smelling his upper lip which is because of all the crap he is talking

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 18:16

@ Serenade, the senses is already on the paper, can you smell how sweet it is for the WC. , it has quite a fowl smell here in the EC.

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 19:17

      LOL- you not well!, Semon

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-11-12 19:39

semon its your rotting brain and you are smelling

      franklyn.davies.1 - 2012-11-12 19:59

cant be a rotting brain, the bloke obviously doesnt have a brain to begin with.

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-12 17:30

Western cape is also top on hate crime, drugs, corrupt cops etc etc.

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-11-12 17:38

      Any evidence of this?

      tobydt - 2012-11-12 17:45

      Actually Gauteng is.

      sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-12 17:48

2 reports of severe attacks on lesbians in less than a month. can't begin with drugs. want more ?

      rohann.geldenhuys - 2012-11-12 17:54

Might be true, but the Police force is controlled by the NATIONAL government. Thus the DA cannot be judged on something they cant control. Good job DA, keep it up!

      timothy.jenkin - 2012-11-12 17:56

sthembiso I agree but we're talking about service delivery here. DA are doing a great job at that, with good service and good people to look up to will bring out a lot of...good. Its starts somewhere and if it starts at the top then I'm all for it. Great LEADERSHIP.

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-11-12 17:57

Jealousy will get you nowhere.. - 2012-11-12 17:57

Hate Crime, drugs and corrupt cops are all issues relating to crime prevention which is a function of National Government through the Ministry of Police, the Ministry of Justice and the National Prosecuting Agency. All in-ably administered by the ANC.

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-11-12 18:02

sthembiso you really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for that post didn't, Service delivery beats the ANC in every aspect.

      sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-12 18:06

@ timoty. Yes service delivery is excellent at the elite surburban areas. What about townships ?

      godfrey.welman - 2012-11-12 18:34

@Sthembiso... on crime, why did the Ministwer stop the Commission?? Police/ANC are so desperate to mess up WC stats, even to the point of refusing request from the parents to ensure grade 12 kids safety during Exam. yet use the army to transport grade 12's in other provinces.

      godfrey.welman - 2012-11-12 18:41

@Hendrik....LOL, you know why your posts are deleted, the evedince on crime reflects badly on the ANC-led Govt and not on the WC Admin.

      timothy.jenkin - 2012-11-12 19:04

@stemiso. I think the majority of WP are poor and those same people seem to be voting the DA in. ANC is not all that bad but DA is better. Multi-racial and have a vision to take us forward. They don't just point out problems but have solutions in most cases.

  • daniel.rossouw1 - 2012-11-12 17:32

We moved to WC from KZN. What a pleasure its been. Like moving to a new world. Our sewage blockage was fixed 90min after we phoned municipality. Roads are in good order. Education standards are much higher. Go WC.

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-11-12 17:55

      Propaganda @ its best

      morne.demeillon - 2012-11-12 20:42

Bongani, this is not propaganda! This it fact, black on white. If you want the same results in your province you know what to do!

  • tobydt - 2012-11-12 17:55

Im from the WCape and I was wondering... Whats a pothole?

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-11-12 18:13

Its very different from an a/hole because they allow potholes to breed.....

  • archie.mooki - 2012-11-12 17:59

Good work Madam Premier !!!! Let's congratulate Zille South Africans

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-12 18:02

And a showerhead is the kingpin

  • dave.robbins.3344 - 2012-11-12 18:04

Yup, the WC works better in so many ways. Although farming in the EC, I still had a house (now sold) in the Overberg Municipality. If there was a problem, a phone-call to the relevant office would solve it. Oh, and I kept my car registered with a CA number plate because it was a lot easier than going through months of hassles to get an EC number plate. The municipal workers here think that it is 'just a job' - in the WC it seems that their work is a passion and they are proud of what they do. And, the only reason I farm in the EC and not the WC is that the land is cheaper - which, I think, tells you something!

  • arthur.mabentsela - 2012-11-12 18:28

I think Hellen has the right idea in mind. I do think she has it easy with CPT in that the town is already well off, has some smart people. I would vote for her as presiden. She does although have one weakness, and that is that she does not tell us her strategies, so no one has hope in what she can do.

      Billy - 2012-11-12 18:49

i see her strategy. do more, talk less.

  • tolo.maano - 2012-11-12 18:43

If it is truth then dat was da last census south africa...we wll never ever hav census again...hw can WC be da best province of month no unless da report is fake....WELL DONE ZELLI keep up the gud work

  • mitch.dhooghe - 2012-11-12 20:10

The rest of the country could learn a lot from the western cape, particularly how to use a budget for service delivery and not for paaaaty paaaaty! Good on you Zille and the DA!

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-11-12 20:50

Wonder what the people from khayelitsha , gugulethu and zola got to say about this.

      penny.stone.589 - 2012-11-12 23:39

Well they were part of the census @thabo.manganye so one can only presume they had their say. Just saying...

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-12 21:22

Thabo, they would say thank you Queen Zille for giving your all across the spectrum of cultures and delivering on your promises! We don't need Zuma and we have forgot about him and the ANC in 2008. Change is as good as a Cape Town holiday!

  • Bongeka - 2012-11-12 22:02

People, let's not put everything in politics. I've never been in Cape Town but what I read about it makes me wonder if it's what the good people on news24 paint it to be. Let's not generalise things just to paint a good picture but let's tell the truth as it is. Western Cape is not for just one race province but for all South Africans who stay there. So let's not just look at one part of it that's doing good and neglect the other parts that are batling to make ends meet. Let's tell the truth so people will trust and believe in you because they can see that u make things happen . I'm saying this because there are other comments that tell a different story about this article. So please people, let's not racialize this and do good things for every citizen. Black or white, we all deserve a good life and South African people will put their wait behind u if u care about everybody irrespective of race or gender. If this is true then I'll say good luck aunty Zille and please keep up the good work.

  • jackie.stone.501 - 2012-11-12 22:14

All of a sudden the start trusting the results, but when they say they are earning an average of 340k they say it is wrong. Ohh lets not forget high level of strikes
