Zille to stand for re-election as DA leader

2012-09-27 17:03

Cape Town - Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille will stand for a second term in November, to advance the "re-alignment of politics" in South Africa, she said on Thursday.

Addressing the Cape Town Press Club in Newlands, Zille said she wanted to lead a movement to recapture "the promise of 1994", and make democracy a reality.

"I will continue to devote my life to the attainment of that goal. I have staked my political leadership on it. And I am prepared to work with all like-minded political leaders to achieve it."

She said the country needed a convergence in the political centre.

None of the existing political parties, as currently constituted, could credibly offer this on its own.

Zille warned of the "inevitable" and "irreversible" implosion of the African National Congress, and the resulting disaster it would wreak on the country.

"When you're on a burning platform, you're in a race against time... In politics, the instinctive reaction to a burning platform is denial."

The ANC was using "political plastic watering cans" to douse the flames.

The next two years, leading up to the next general election, would see significant change, Zille said.

Every person had to decide where they stood: with the populists who would drive the country into the "abyss"; or with the constitutionalists, who would fight for four core principles.

These were defending the Constitution, nurturing genuine non-racialism, growing a market-driven economy, and building a state that put competence above party loyalty.

Facts x100 to all former oppressors. You will never bring apartheid back, not in our lfe time - 2012-09-27 18:33

What a good feeling, there are still some competent, driven and disciplined people left in this country. Thank you DA and members for remaining civilized and focused, thank you for working hard and applying your brilliant logic to problems. Its really sad that the violent, parasitic thugs (masses) cannot appreciate your achievements and what you stand for, dont hope on their vote, cause birds of a feather flock together.

      john.smit.121772 - 2012-09-27 19:38

Helen should stand back for someone more dynamic. Her pathetic toy-toy politics and marches, putting peoples lives at risk, puts her in the same class as the ANC.

      Neven.Subrayal - 2012-09-28 15:57

@Sanda.mnyazi, I've posted this comment before but it applies to you. With all the evidence stacked up against the ANC when it comes to successfully governing this once beautiful country, there are only 3 types of people that would vote for the ANC again; the pro reverse apartheid (Black racist), the uneducated (the ANC has made sure that they have plenty of them by making sure that the standard of education was dropped to the extent that textbooks are no more a requirement as a learning aid) and those that have or want to get their hands in the cookie jar. I would say troll as the 4th but they normally encompass all 3.

      pyn.appel - 2012-09-28 14:07

I agree in a sense, but question is why Jerry? Just because her skin colour is white? All citizens need to start looking at facts in our beautiful country, and 1 of the biggest facts: ANC is breaking our country and people down instead of building up.

      pyn.appel - 2012-09-28 14:09

Only on that 1 point Irene? That's a bit harsh don't you think? Death penalty is not the answer to all the problems. I would also like to see the reinstatement of death penalty but I don't not vote DA just because they don't stand for that ... duh

      pyn.appel - 2012-09-28 14:10

I wanted to add: Give the DA a chance to do their bit and get the crime rate down without the death penalty, if it doesnt work then we start to ask (demand!) for it!

  • sandor.l.varga - 2012-09-27 17:47

  • pmalungana - 2012-09-27 17:49

you will be doing that at your own peril. This country is not ready to be led by a woman though it preaches gender equality. So the longer you stay at the helm of DA the more you will delay your party in governing this country. This is a brotherly advice.

  • monique.potgieter.31 - 2012-09-27 18:24

Are you guys serious?? Always with this stupid race card. Let me tell you something... I teach at an English school, where 80% of the children are black, and one of my children asked me a while ago : "mam, I don't think it's right what is happening to our country. Why is our government so stupid?", and that ladies and gentlemen, was asked by a grade 4 child. A black boy, who obviously has much MUCH more between his ears to know that out beautiful country is going down the drain. Maybe you should look past RACE and she that it is uneducated people with lack of, well, ANYTHING, in my opinion, that we are putting our trust in. None of us are safe, none of us can flippin afford anything anymore. So get the hell over yourselves and think... Why is a country like America so strong and proud? Because there are educated people running the country. And if the government we had today, was anything as smart as my Grade 4's, I'd have no problem with it. Go ahead barbarians... Vote for your corrupt, selfish ANC all you want, because it's not just the whites suffering. My black neighbours are hanging by a thread as well.

      catgirl1971 - 2012-09-27 18:30

It will take at least another generation for the ANC to lose its support base. The uneducated masses voting for them is what is keeping these incompetent, thieving, good for nothing swines in power.

      lunga.swelindawo.9 - 2012-09-27 19:37

yes mam i like your joke but if its true i dont need your school for my child..... grade 4 pupil call elders stupid, i dont think so,more especial in front of the respected teacher.

      monique.potgieter.31 - 2012-09-27 20:42

Lunga, do you know the saying "You need to give respect to get respect"?? And I suspect that you will send your child to a school where they don't have proper desks or textbooks, just as long as his elders rule the party? Get with it.

      sibusiso.mkoko - 2012-09-27 20:57

Liar! Sis! U teach them such garbage. Our poor black kids are in trouble.

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-09-28 13:53

Cool story monique hey well done P.S. which school do you teach at? need to make sure i never send my child there

  • boulvy.selala - 2012-09-27 18:30

The arrival of white people in South Africa robbed us a natural process of growth..I don't care if whether ANC leaders are corrupt or not,the fact that remains is I will NEVER subscribe to a white party..DA and all this small parties will never govern SA, finish n klaar

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-09-27 18:41

Hey you people hate the white people so much, tell me who goes into the rural areas delivering blankets in winter and food to the needy. Who has been fighting to the blacks a better education and the poor uplifted. The black who have come into money dont even care about their own poor, its every man for himself. When you have no money or are hungry, who is the first person you stop on the street, yes a white person. So to all of you that hate the white people so much, may you rot in own own struggle, because you are still all in chains and ask yourself why, because your government you voted for are keeping you there for their own agenda, you are there to help them run the gravy train. When the whites are gone, who do you think is going to dish out the pensions and the grants, your government is coming after to you, because you will have the pay the tax the white people normally pay. So rot in hell the lot of you. Your trouble is you dont have the guts to take a chance and just maybe you might be better off. Like the lotto tata ma but you are too afraid to move on rather keep the shackles on and wait for somebody to give you an absa banking account.

      Onke Mdingi - 2012-09-27 19:55

Isn't that wonderful? Everyone in this world plays a role be it BIG or small. We need each other.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-09-28 07:49

Well said. I am so tired of the fund raising and the charity, with nary a 'person of colour' helping in any way. I think what irks me most is the 'entitlement' attitude. e.g when I travel through the Transkei, and see the 'rot' the waste and the poverty I want to weep. 11 years old girls pregnant because there is a grant for them? Thousands, destitiute, hungry, homless and unemployed beacuse THEIR government have lost the plot, forgotten them and in fact ignored them in their desperate need for help. This my friends is an eye-opener, this has NOTHING to do with colour or creed. It is simply not fashionable, or news-worthy, to assist almost one million people in rural areas. They advance 'tokens' now and again; trot out Mandela 'cos he lives there, but the reality is hearbreakingly obvious for me, the 'rot is from the root' I have lost the plot I am so angry.

  • pula.betsho - 2012-09-27 18:42

Do you realize that the DA has a parasite metality they cannot say anything without mentioning ANC. Hellen you are doing the opposite of the 94 promise DA shadow ministers are all white males and Capetown is a racist show under your watch.Black property buyers are priced higher by so doing you are economically engineering their location within the city then give better services and policing to the white areas to secure the votes. Why not give way for De lille, are you scared that the racists will run to afriform????DA can be a preferred governing party by the youth if you can send a strong message against racial division,on bill boards,tv campaigns and advert you invite previously dis-ads but in serious issues you serve the previously advantaged.

To every single person who won't vote DA because its led by a white person, get over yourselves! Learn to read and learn to read the stats! The western cape is the beat run province in SA! You people are pathetic and need to learn what's good for this country very quickly!! Or you are flushing this contries future down the drain! 1 more point, the fact you won't vote fr a party cause it has white leader us blatantly racist!!

We won't get over ourselves. Why should we listen to you? You don't do ish for us. You get over yourself! Never will I put an X next to the DA emblem, coz I choose to. And voting for the ANC don't make us stupid.

      catgirl1971 - 2012-09-27 21:10

      LanfearM - 2012-09-28 11:10

@ sibusiso.mkoko - yes voting for the ANC does make you stupid. You vote for them every election and they never improve. They are flushing this country down the toilet with their corruption and mismanagement. You don't have to vote DA, there are other parties to vote for such as Cope etc. that don't have a white leader if that is what really bothers you. @ ndyeboreginaldmazawule - you are so right. A change of government is what this country needs. Or at the least a change of ANC leadership that will include a leader and president that is not corrupt, and can manage this country and clean up the corruption.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-28 11:14

@ sibusisio.mkoko - dictorship? Justify your comment with evidence. You know what the problem is? You are talking of "ruling" South Africa. A government and its leader(s) are there to GOVERN the country, not RULE it! We are a democracy with elected officials, we are not a monarchy with a king that "rules"! Once you learn the difference between "ruling" and governing, then perhaps you and your beloved ANC will understand what they must do to stop SA from sliding into oblivion.
