Zille tried to recruit Vavi - report

2012-05-05 22:37

Johannesburg - Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) head Zwelinzima Vavi claimed that DA leader Helen Zille "bugged" him to join her party, the Sunday Times reported.

Vavi told the newspaper that Zille said to him at a football match: "Can you imagine... me and you, the power?"

Vavi claimed it was a preoccupation of Zille's to recruit him to the Democratic Alliance.

"She is very, very power-hungry because she has this mistaken view... that I can be recruited to the opposition ranks.

"She tried to recruit me, in person, to join the DA in the run-up to the local elections."

The two have since bumped heads, with Vavi banning Zille from an e-toll protest march and Zille claiming Cosatu had failed the unemployed.

"That is how she dreams. I can never join her party [whose] very sense of existence is to continue the exploitation of workers."

Vavi said he and the DA were like "water and paraffin" and he believed that Zille would take him on "at a personal level" because he had refused her advances.

Zille's spokesperson Pierre-Charl du Preez would not confirm the claims, but dismissed them as "facetious".

    Looking for attention

      Dennis - 2012-05-06 08:15

I know Helen has balls but this is ridiculous skinner !!

      Glyn - 2012-05-06 09:50

@La - You sound like a very bitter person.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 11:39

Le, if you are this bitter on a Sunday, I don't want to meet you on a Monday. Man get a life.

      Burtfred - 2012-05-06 16:37

Vavi - you are an enigma. You regularly publicly criticize the ANC for their multitude of wrongdoings, yet you stay in the tripartate alliance, as if that is paramount. You run with the rabbits and hunt with hounds, so when you make claims that Zille "bugged you" one can only take your words with a pinch of salt. Why on earth would the DA want you as a member? Your Socialist labour ideology is anathema to liberal capitalists.

  • Gerda Malherbe - 2012-05-05 22:58

Dream on, brother. Wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole

      Ronald - 2012-05-06 02:25

Craig, how to faced can you get? People like yourself write comments like this while complaining on the other hand that the DA does not do enough to garner the black vote. Come on, make up your minds. When she does what you ask for you complain. No wonder SA is in the condition it is as no coherent direction is kept by government. At least Zille is improving the lives of the people in the Western Cape instead of stealing us blind. It does not matter how you weave your cute fairy tales, the facts speak for themselves.

  • Hadebe - 2012-05-05 23:01

Dont know what to believe no more, vavi, hay nawe!!

  • Roger - 2012-05-05 23:07

Can you imagine..........who would have thought that Vavi had that much imagination? His subconscious mind must be working overtime-oops sorry no overtime. That is hard work.

      Ronald - 2012-05-06 02:28

Once again, Craig, she is just doing what is needed to make the DA a representative political party instead of a racist white party, which is more than I can say of the ANC.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-06 11:41

Craig and why is the ANC holding meetings how to recruit white, coloured and indian voters?.

      Freddie - 2012-05-06 13:15

@Craig: Is the the ANC idealogy to rob the country blind of it's scarce resources and futher prevent the disadvantaged from accessing political and economic freedom as that's all they've achieved since 1994?

      HendrikAfrika - 2012-05-06 18:41

If you can not see Vavi, the best manager in the ANC, as part of the Da then you better climb on your emigration bycicle. This country is then not for you and the sooner you get out of SA the better for the rest of us who are trying to build a multirational state minus the corrupt ANC.

      Fred - 2012-05-06 23:40

Where's the evidence, Craig. You're talking rubbish and you know it.

  • tinus.olivier.5 - 2012-05-05 23:12

Why don't I believe this crap? Maybe its because I know that nzimande is a snake recruited by the anc loooooooong time before the da even started showing the anc their incompetend ways.

      Roger - 2012-05-06 00:10

hmmmm Nzimande = Blade = our minister of missed education

  • Pule - 2012-05-05 23:14

  • Johan Vermaak - 2012-05-05 23:35

Predictable!!!! How to draw attention away from the problem 101! Written by ANC and co.

      Dee - 2012-05-07 12:51

Absolutely! Vavi - you are just another ANC condom with this nonsesical story designed to detract from real issues and polarise the masses against any effective opposition party.

  • Gladstone - 2012-05-05 23:36

And what was wrong with that? Vavi you thought she will come and bribe you? Why, you're saying it now?

  • Gladstone - 2012-05-05 23:45

She is the leader of the number one opposition, and you are a COSATU leader. What is wrong with that? She has a right to.

      Ronald - 2012-05-06 02:36

The ANC cadres did not complain when the ANC enticed DA members of parliament with promises of ministerial, ambassadorial positions or financial compensation in order to cross the party political floor.

      Gladstone - 2012-05-06 02:56

If these guys can be like that, but not forgeting to serve the people, our democracy can be @ its best.

  • Crracker - 2012-05-06 00:06

If the story is true one must assume that Helen Zille and the DA had formed some pretty solid opinions/conclusions about Vavi and his political future. They must have seen straight through the so-called socialism and worker friendly pretensions.

  • Erna - 2012-05-06 00:50

    I think Vavi is delusional.

      HendrikAfrika - 2012-05-06 18:45

      Vavi is great.

      henk63 - 2012-05-07 19:53

HendrikAfrika, I would say he is an astute, and rather opprunistic politician. To state "Vavi is great" is too broad and assigns value he doesn't deserve. He now scored big time with the ANC and it's mindless voters by ridiculing Zille, but these things have a habit of coming back to bite you. One day, hopefully, he will live to serve in the DA and THEN he may have the chance to be great.

  • luvuko - 2012-05-06 00:56

I don't see anything wrong with that. Recruiting happens everywhere, business, sports etc. So i don't see why this is even an issue.

      Crracker - 2012-05-06 01:10

Absolutely! But if we think about it, who cares or should care. Perhaps there is a bit more behind this. Perhaps Vavi was very interested or even the prime mover and later realised that it may be safer to pre-empt the gossip. What more convenient way than we see now? Why should Helen Zille suddenly out of the blue tell Vavi that he should join her/DA so the two of them can rule the country? Something was probably said but exactly what and on whose initiation will remain a little obscure for now. But shortly we shall hear more of the circumstances. It would come as a huge surprise if Helen Zille on the spur of the moment approached Vavi who is the leader of the biggest trade union to make him part and parcel of the DA. The DA isn't exactly the sole proprietorship of Helen Zille and she definitely does not have the power to dish out positions in it. Interesting. We'll see.

  • WhiteNut - 2012-05-06 01:10

So what Mr Vavi??? We know that you are tryina suck up to the ANC, after your unbecoming or opportunistic the way, the egg is still on your face lol, if you know wht I'm talkina bout, and surely you do!

  • George - 2012-05-06 02:10

Unfortunately the common politicians are basically the same. They want power, luxury, fame and they don't care how they get it. When they have power they become corrupt and dictatorial and paranoid. Democracy flies out the window. SA needs a leader that will use politics only as an instrument and have the highest integrity. Biko, Mandela, Ramphele? Where are the white leaders? Must say Jack Bloom in Jo'burg is showing great potential. Selfless, involved, passionate.

      HendrikAfrika - 2012-05-06 18:54

Vavi is such a person and would be a great leader. he looks after his people. Join Cosatu and you will find that he will look after you, black or white, he looks after his people. As president of our country he will look after the country and all people without consideration of race , male or female. Security will have a high priority with him as will the economy. Just see how he manage the portfolio as leader of Cosatu. You don't touch his people whether you are ANC, DA or Communist - his workers who he is elected to take care of is priority. Viva Vavi !!!!!!!

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-05-06 02:45

This zwelinzima vavi guy is a attention seeker, it just shows how powerful the DA has become from the past years that's why people can see panic buttons coming from the ANC,COSATU and the SACP, yes ANC can win the 2014 general elections but the 2019 ones I just have that feeling south africa will have a new government. ANC and your allies be very afraid because a marathon race can be won by anyone.

      Brett - 2012-05-06 07:28

Sydney, that attitude will be the end of SA....

      jannie.beirowski - 2012-05-06 09:49

Gladstone & Sydney, you should wake up!Denying and/or ignoring anything does not make it go away! The DA is progressing because of the weakness of the ANC, so you should not attack the result of the weakness, but the cause of the result! Maybe that's to complicated for your small minds...

      Solo - 2012-05-06 11:02

I'm a bit tired of the ANC and their incompetance but the only other choice being the DA gives us no choice but to keep them in power. The DA is too much for the white men for my liking.

      HendrikAfrika - 2012-05-06 19:00

Keith, your dreams will only realise if people like Vavi is judged on his ability as a leader and not on his colour. He would have been an excellent leader of the DA in 2018 for the 2019 election and still may be if some of these idiots stop judging him on his 'black'ground and see him as the ideal leader he is.

  • Mark - 2012-05-06 05:09

A wicked and slanderous lie. No surprises coming from labour unions - this is their bread and butter.

  • tom.vorster - 2012-05-06 06:12

Well if she did, who cares, she probably did it far more subtly than COSATU affilaite recruitment methods - threats and intimidation. And heaven help anyone who refuses to heed the call by a fat cat office bearer from COSATU house to strike, trash or just cause general mayhem.

      ndzondza1 - 2012-05-06 07:24

I would say a matter of concern would be if she really said "imagine the power" like Darth Vader or something. I know politicians are the scum of this earth, but I somehow imagined her to be just a little cut above the rest....

@Piet, u can call the current system apartheid all you want but it isn't going to make it one! Your people pre 1994 made sure that no one tops about unique! in an evil way of cause

      henk63 - 2012-05-07 20:16

Cedric & Solo, please please try to engage your minds. Apartheid is DEAD and cannot be resurrected. Get it? Your playing on the fears of your uneducated brethren will only succeed for so long. Sooner or later, if your race have any propensity to think clearly, the masses will wake up and see who is really holding them back. Not the whites (we have no power anymore) but their black leaders whom they vote for! I think you should get with the programme.

  • Johan - 2012-05-06 08:11

Vavi makes this statement how long after he said it happened?just now when Zille is taking him on about his ethics? And now everyone believes him. The same guy who, as leader of cosatu, says he didn't know they(he) is benefitting from e-toll and didn't know his wife (him) is benefitting from tenders. His word means nothing, or did Mdluli tap into alledged conversation

  • Shascke - 2012-05-06 08:13

Well the local govt elections were 18 May 2011 so now almost a year later the allegation appears. Funny that it is at the time that the DA is putting pressure on COSATU. Also if it is true whats the problem, sports, companies, organisations all head hunt people. This is cheap politics Mr Vavi and you know it.

  • Wendy - 2012-05-06 08:23

She did that because vavi is ecting like a political person forgetting us has a workers. The workers are forgotten by cosatu leadership now he is telling the .a.n.c who must be elected when are you going to address our problems has workers ?

  • Nkosinathi - 2012-05-06 08:41

As an ANC myself I believe they is nothing wrong if Zille wanted Vavi to join her party. Even Juju can join. Its democracy. We have received COPE members, UDM, IFP, NP, SACP members and so what. I will always love and respect Thabo Mbeki, he knew politics and he knew how to deal with opportunist. Vavi is a union man and he must specialise in that. Too many workers need him while he is busy juggling and flip flopping. Workers are slaves and their master run around picking tops for public attention.

The National Democratic Revolution is all but sold to the ANC elite minority and its being channelled into fat bank accounts. He must do this quickly before he also becomes a used condom.
