Zuma: Singing about leaders fine

Johannesburg - The ANC has never stopped its members from singing songs about its leaders, President Jacob Zuma, who is also the party's leader, said on Tuesday.

"The ANC said 'let us not discuss leadership'. It's different from singing about leaders," Zuma told reporters at Gallagher Estate where the ANC is holding its national policy conference over four days.

"Historically the ANC has never stopped people from singing about leaders."

Zuma was reacting to a question about how he felt when delegates at the event sang in support of him, when the party had warned members not to discuss succession.

At the start of the conference earlier on Tuesday delegates from the North West sang: "We'll take Zuma to Mangaung... There is no problem."

ANC members from KwaZulu-Natal belted out: "Those who burn t-shirts with Zuma's face on will be shot."

Other delegates sang to the national executive members sitting on the stage: "It is Zuma, they have never seen him, they don't know him."

"Ha a yo mathatha Zuma a le teng" (There are no problems when Zuma is around), sang others.

Zuma said the president was the face of the party.

"When you are singing about leaders you are not campaigning. It is not an issue about elections."

Zuma said the ANC had sung about figures such as former ANC presidents Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Oliver Tambo, sometimes even before they became party leader.

"We sing about officials with a track record."

The ANC will elect new leaders at its Mangaung conference in December. The party's top officials have warned its members not to nominate their preferred leaders before October, or discuss succession before then.

ANC deputy secretary general Thandi Modise said members had been asked not to sing derogatory songs about leaders.

"We sing about different eras and struggles," she told reporters.

Modise said that was why she found the action taken by AfriForum against former ANC Youth League president Julius Malema for singing "dubul’ ibhunu" (shoot the boer) last year amusing.

"The ANC, in the real African way, will continue to sing," she said.

Worse, Brian, is that these people singing the songs are the ones who will vote Zuma back into power. Not the electorate, this small clique of a few thousand people.

Mr president you haven't submitted the \rock counting\ home work your teacher gave to you in standard two. Zuma get out of the way please, the mess you and your communists have caused is enough. Maybe we can still find the brocken pieces and build a better S.A, just get out of the way.

It is always cheaper to depreciate a vehicle over a finite number of years than either trying to retire it earlier or maintain it after that period is over. If the Pres finishes his term, it will be a graceful exit whether we like what he has done or not. If you try to push too hard, he may grow a cyst. Many people who tried to force changes which would have gone naturally ended up worse off. If we know in 2018 or so there will be a new Pres, we may as well weather the storm. We can't wish away a winter. After all the fella may want to have a legacy of some sort. Who doesn't want to expand Madiba's shoe size?

At some point - and hopefully soon - you will realise that you can't sing your way out of every situation. Evangelism is all about the hereafter and a way of hypnotising people to get through the hell and misery of a week and psyche them up for the next 6 days of hell and misery. This is 2012 and 18 years of singing has not brought people closer to god or the father, but has brought us closer to the Godfather - 2014.

Hehehe singing about leaders is fine now that its working for you for now and you've started by making sure that you muzzle and suppress everyone that does not support your ideas. Zuma failed the anc dismally instead of uniting the organisation he is dividing the anc.

Only if it is about how great you are. If it's not to your liking then we will have to ponder it. Other than that sing about a leader not a crook, thief, liar, rapist and two faced ar**hole. Yes go and kiss some pastors butt and tell everyone how great a christian you are. Idiot! And while you are still providing blank cheques to your comrades, cronies and pals they will sing your praises until the sun sets.
