Zuma approves SABC interim board

2013-04-08 22:17

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has endorsed the interim SABC board recommended by Parliament, the communications department said on Monday.

The interim board comprises chairperson Zandile Tshabalala, her deputy Noluthando Gosa, economist Iraj Abedian, former public service commission member Vusumzi Mavuso, and chartered accountant Ronnie Lubisi.

Last month, Parliament adopted a resolution to dissolve the SABC board and recommended an interim board to guide the public broadcaster.

"The next process is that the board now deals with the day-to-day strategic issues that the SABC board has to deal with," department spokesperson Siyabulela Qoza said.

Qoza said Communications Minister Dina Pule met the interim board during bilateral meetings on Thursday. The interim board can sit for only six months.

Parliament is now expected to initiate a public process of inviting people to serve on a permanent board, and interviewing them.

In March, Zuma accepted the resignations of most members of the SABC board, including chairperson Ben Ngubane and his deputy Thami ka Plaatjie.

He later received and accepted the resignations of Lumko Mtimde, John Danana, Cedric Gina, Desmond Golding, Cawe Mahlati, and Noluthando Gosa.

The exodus followed a row between Ngubane and the board, reportedly about acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng's tenure.

Who cares. No one with any self respect and brains even watch the propaganda banana tv farce. Besides. Just another bunch of partisan crony comrade appointees to support the cANCerous regime. Waste of taxpayers funds. Privatise this entity along with the 500 other bleeding state/parasitical entities that's bleeding this country dry. BASTA!!!

      Ernica Stanford - 2013-04-09 09:30

I fully agree. The only time we will see improvement in the SABC is if it gets privatised. Other than that they may as well all go home and let Chimpanzees run the place. I'm sure they would do a much better job. The SABC is a running joke!

Let's not even go there. Have you seen the 30-40yr old movies. And the series that were bought by SABC 30 yrs ago and being repeated now. 90% of SABC is repeats of repeats of repeats. I've never seen anything so ridiculous. Even the 30-40yr old movies are repeated every second month. They have no pride whatsoever, but then again who can have pride in a broadcasting station like this. If it wasn't so annoying it would be funny. Everyone should stop paying their licenses and get a modem and watch overseas internet broadcasting.

  • Winifred Watson - 2013-04-09 09:35

Of course Zuma approves, he made the original selection, so they are just following his orders. When the right people are placed in the right jobs and not placed their for a reason, that will be the day that hell freezes over. Thats why our Country is in such a mess.

  • Sabelo Lex Mthembu - 2013-04-09 10:14

SABC feed us nonsense. Zero interest whatsoever. They'd know how little we care if they were to make SABC optional. They'd have below average ratings.
