Zuma calls for ANC unity in Western Cape

2011-03-13 21:43

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday renewed his appeal for unity in the ANC in the Western Cape ahead of the May 18 local government elections.

The ANC should unite and "put our differences aside", he told a packed Dal Josephat Stadium in Paarl at the ANC's provincial manifesto launch.

"We must unite to defeat the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape," he said.

"We must take back the Cape Town metro as a first step in taking back the Western Cape in the next national election.

"I am confident we are ready to do so," Zuma told the crowd of over 15 000 people.

He was convinced that when the votes were counted after May 18, Cape Town would be in the hands of the ANC.

"The ANC is something bigger than people think."

Zuma said the ANC's election manifesto was designed to make people's experience of local government a better one.

Past support for the ANC had enabled the party to reduce poverty.

Among other things, about 2.5 million houses had been built giving shelter to 10 million people since 1994.

Some 93% of homes now had access to clean water, 84% had electricity connected, and 77% had sanitation.

However, much remained to be done, especially at local government level, Zuma said.

The ANC had a plan to improve local government. It had listened to the people's complaints, suggestions and compliments, and these had been taken into account in the manifesto.

The ANC remained committed to, among other things, reducing significantly the infrastructure backlogs, including water, electricity and sanitation, and "formalising" informal settlements.

The party also promised to increase the availability of rental housing.

Turning to councillors, Zuma said the ANC would ensure councillors served the people and were accountable to them. It was also increasing participation by communities in choosing candidates for councils. Communities had a right to reject those they did not want.

National and provincial government would also help those councils lacking capacity to "do their job".

"A vote for the ANC is an investment for a better life," he said.

Earlier, Western Cape provincial chair Marius Fransman said he was giving notice the ANC was back to "reconnect with the people on the ground".

However, the challenge was to make everyone in the province feel welcome, he said.

The ANC knows they wont win the cape metro, and in fact, they never ever received a clear majority in the past either. They governed once before but because of the national party disbanding and joining them. Why has all this news about an "oversupply" of coloured people been making the headlines a few weeks before the election? I think that the DA is the one that has become desperate because: * They know that there are migrants from the eastern cape settling in the western cape, and who vote for the ANC * Many ID supporters might not be happy with their party joining the DA,so who will they vote for with yet another party joining the DA? * The coloured majority is shrinking and since they scraped through the provincial elections with 51%, they know that this razor thin majority could easily be eroded and with the ID joining them, one less party no longer exists with whom to form a coalition with * The DA never received an outright majority in the cape metro last time around and governs in a coalition with yet another razor thin majority. And with the FF+ breaking this old news to coloured people and the DA jumping on the band wagon, only a few weeks before the elections,so as to influence the perception of coloured people, one can only think that it is none other than the DA and its leader Zille, who are the desperate ones.

      AquaticApe - 2011-03-13 22:32

And why do you think the people from the ANC run Eastern Cape are moving to the DA run Western Cape?

      thinker - 2011-03-13 22:42

Please tell me which ward the anc won from the DA inthe last year and while you at it, how many wards the DA took from the anc. PS...ANC will never have unity in WC as blacks hates to submit to coloureds and they in return do not respect blacks.

      ArtGee - 2011-03-13 23:05

Difference between the ANC and the DA is: DA Delivers... ANC MAKES IMPOSSIBLE PROMISES, whilst emptying out the the same breath!!!!

      Jason - 2011-03-14 07:39

That sounds rather optimistic, DA didn't put the coloured comments in the news the ANC did that themselves. Just like unhappy ANC supporters will rather not vote than go to the DA, ID supporters will rather not vote than go to the ANC. Western Cape best run province, still no corruption or financial mismanagement. Can't say that for all the ANC run provinces. The sad thing is all these factors hurt the very people that vote for ANC, education is down, jobs are down but politicians always seem to be doing better and better.

      lean - 2011-03-14 07:48

Zooma can call and call and call... Nobody want to here you Zoo and you ANC - Bunch of Moral-less Morons... The more ANC scamming against Whites, Coloureds, Indians, the more you bringing us together stupid idiots!!!

      wattalotokak - 2011-03-14 08:38

My man - the suma is talking about 2.5mil houses...! What 2.5mil? The same ones that we need 52 billion rands to FIX??? Do the maths a bit - it turns out that should we have to demolish, and rebuild new houses we may have about 730,000.00 houses to "fix"...! Are THESE the houses we are talking about? Oh and the jobs? How do they want to provide jobs for 5mil people? By changing the law so that coloureds loose they jobs - NOW I understand how they plan to give 5mil jobs by 2015...! IDIOTS

      Shadoz - 2011-03-14 09:15

You know that they are migrating like parasites to the Western Cape cause things are better that any other province in the Western Cape yet they do not have the common sence or brain power to realize whyn the province is doing so well. So what do they do they try to vote a corrupt regima that is almost if not worse that any before, so they can come and mess things up for the one province that is accually making a differnce.

      VM1 - 2011-03-14 12:56

@ the nameless guy All your observasion are not going to help you and your folk. The question and the challenge for you is whatare you doing about all the stuff you are moaning about ! ! ! From time to time we have o read your long comment some baseless and unfounded but you never offer any solution to the problems you "identify". Now give us some food for thought not this rumbling we are becoming used to !!!!!!!

  • Marius - 2011-03-13 22:11

wtf? Just look at the rest of the country that is run by the ANC. No service, no sewerage systems , poor water quality, roads falling apart, extreme corruption. Cape Town? Just the opposite.

      ? - 2011-03-13 22:20

And u think this is because of the DA and because of Zille? I got news for you: coloured and white people have different work ethics relative to blacks,THATS why cape town and the western cape is a success, even without mineral wealth. Anyone can do a better job than the ANC when elected, even if they just pop up at work and surf the internet all day.

      Grant - 2011-03-13 22:36

@nameless: A somewhat confusing waffle! It is not at all clear what point you are trying to make. In one long breath you knock both the ANC and all of the opposition - are you forming your own paty? Standing as an independant maybe? You certainly sound like a politician, you speak a lot but actually say very little. (other posts on similar topics also apply)

      ? - 2011-03-13 23:23

@Grant, I dont understand what you are asking me precisely. All I did was stated my views and facts. And no i will not be starting my own party. Im not an ANC or DA voter and I hate these two parties because they are polarising this country. In fact,I wont be voting this year because if many people such as myself dont vote,it sends a clear message to these idiots that we are sick and tired of their corruption and false promises (that goes for both black and white politicians). You need an X percentage of voters to cast their vote and without this,an election cannot be valid.People who say if u dont vote then u cant complain have it wrong,as voting for these current politicians wont get us anywhere and this is a valid option,my democratic option to not vote. The DA has apparently now also accepted money from this Gupta menace and one wonders that if it is indeed true,in what form the DA will pay them back and at whos expense. Why do these foreigners have their finger in our pie is what I ask.And why do these politicians allow it to happen.

      Grant - 2011-03-14 01:36

@nameless: Lets agree that you don't vote for the views you have expressed. Let us also surmise that your hypothetical neighbour also does not vote because he is apathetic and simply could not be bothered. Then tell me how to tell the difference between the two non-votes? Who will ever know that you are making a point and that your neighbour is just lazy? I reject your logic as being totally spurious. Better a spoilt vote if you feel this way than a non-vote. Think on - a non vote will allways be in fact a vote cast for the ruling party, no matter who that party is - a fact that the ANC relies on heavily!

      AmperGatvol - 2011-03-14 07:49

In my opinion, if you dont vote, you have no grounds to complain.

  • POLLENYS - 2011-03-13 23:02

Nameless hits the nail on the head. Compare the service you mostly get from blacks to that of whites and coloureds. Start with SAA. As for unity in the WC: The ANC is not united anywhere.

      ArtGee - 2011-03-14 06:55

Of the 2,5m houses, 2m have to be REBUILT! Everything the ANC touches, BREAKS!

  • Francois - 2011-03-13 23:57

Okay everybody calm down. This is coming from the same person who said that South Africa will advance beyond the first round of the soccer world cup and also says that he respects human lives, but does not know that the Matabele are human. Let him go to Cape Town and waste his time there, maybe in the mean time, Helen and co can get another big one outside Cape Town to topple, that is off course, if she reads her mail and do not leave it to her less intelligent correspondent.

      Francois - 2011-03-13 23:58

O sorry, Janeekop, may the Third Wors be with you.

      ? - 2011-03-14 00:10

@Francois, Helen does not deserve another one outside of cape town because these white owned firms are now hiring more and more black people in branches located in coloured areas in a province where coloured people are the majority. So many coloureds are voting for the ANC and end up getting stabbed in the back by the blacks and many coloureds vote for the DA,yet the white man doesnt say " stop right there, why are coloured people being marginalised when it comes to jobs, put an end now",and with this, they are being stabbed by the white man in the back (yet again) As for Helen, hope she ends up getting less than 50% in the cape metro,as it will surely put an end to her stupid smiling and dancing.

      Grant - 2011-03-14 01:41

@ Namless. You remind me of an old conundrum: How do you tell a properly balanced man? He has a chip on both shoulders!

  • Steve - 2011-03-14 01:59

"A vote for the ANC is an investment for a better life," my foot.

      BigD - 2011-03-14 05:39

Zuma is only talking about black people. His nazi type new labour rules exclude whites, Indians and Coloured people. The anc is slowly reducing the level of proserity in SA to a level where min cash will be required for improvements.

      lmduplessis - 2011-03-14 07:19

Technically no. He's talking about everyone employed by the ANC having a better life. the Ordinary voter can go hang for all they care, as long as the get their votes.

  • Luckybugger - 2011-03-14 06:32

Yip Mr. Zuma, and pigs do fly, the Western Cape is the only province the ANC have not broken yet

  • CheekySod - 2011-03-14 06:43

  • Micheal - 2011-03-14 07:00

  • WCD - 2011-03-14 07:22

  • Alwyn - 2011-03-14 07:26

AND here he starts with empty promisses ,please dont be fooled by this ,he only worry about himself and the rest of his cronies,Dont let the cape fall into the ANC hands ,look at the rest of the country in their hands,i would be proof that they are not capable,,Vote DA ,AT LEAST THEY ARE A MULTIRACIAL PARTY WHO ARE THERE FOR ALL OF US,,APARTHEID WILL NEVER RETURN,DONT BELIEVE IN THE ANC PROPOGANDA

      bar-one - 2011-03-14 08:07

It has very little to do with capability ,but rather that they consider a position of power a chance at getting rich. There is no work ethic or moral restraint. Any black person will tell you that if they got the chance they would do the same. This is the reason the anc gets voted , because maybe ,just maybe tommorrow the voter will be the one with the opportunity to steal himself rich. Under the anc there is no going to jail if you are caught , simply re-deployment , and then only if there is too much pressure. The anc are in it for the cash , and only the cash. I feel for their voters who actually think they want this country to prosper. Only the big guns will ever prosper ,much like the rest of the continent.

      Perfume - 2011-03-14 08:07

That is how they keep the masses in bondage, by lying to them and telling them if they vote any other party besides the Corrupt, apartheid will return!!!!

  • kingswing69 - 2011-03-14 07:36

ANC you a**holes . you make promises you cant keep , no wonder this country is in a mess

  • sunnyT - 2011-03-14 07:37

Why would you want to Vote for the ANC? look what they do to your hard earned Tax.. and yes I and ANTI ANC based on the last rhetoric. Zuma is a nice guy. but thats about the only nice thing. Beyond that, its all about how they can enrich themselves.

Zuma a "nice guy?" You also got MAD COW DISEASE?????

  • BigMoose - 2011-03-14 07:50

  • Perfume - 2011-03-14 08:03

"We must unite to defeat the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape," he said.....must be having a nightmare....this will NEVER happen. Has Zuma forgotten the insults hurled at the Coloureds being an oversupply not so long ago, has he forgotten how Mr Manuel got a slap on the wrist so to speak for standing up for what was right!!!!!!!!! Does he really think the Coloureds in the Western Cape are stupid and blind to hand over the Western Cape just like that to the Corrupt....stop dreaming!!!!!

  • To The Point - 2011-03-14 08:32

It is all Monkey see Monkey do - stay away from the Western Cape - we want to remain First world and not become third world like the rest of South Africa where nothing works. ANC destroy the rest of the country as you wish and perish with it, stay away from the pearl of South Africa - YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TURN THE WESTERN CAPE INTO THE GHETTO YOU HAVE MADE THE REST OF SOUTH AFRICA. ANC YOU HAVE TURNED THIS COUNTRY INTO THE LAVATORY OF THE CONTINENT - A SAFE HAVEN FOR CRIMINALS, THE CORRUPT AND THE REST OF AFRICA FLEEYING THEIR CRIPPLING COUNTRIES - WE DO NOT WANT ANC IN THE WESTERN CAPE – STAY AWAY

  • michaelph - 2011-03-14 08:42

Promises are easily made. Why would the complete lack of accountability, blatant fraud and sheer mismanagement that the other provinces experience under the ANC be any different should they ever take over the WC? Go Helen Go

  • sjackson - 2011-03-14 08:50

Why is this man running to the western cape? only at elections times does he want to show his face. I hope the people can see what he is up to. promises will be made but nothing will come out of it. So vote DA.

  • nem - 2011-03-14 09:43

How can he have unity in the western cape when there is no unity in the anc with all the inhouse fighting and bickering for who is going to fill their pockets next. Western Cape is a prime example of how the rest of the country would fair, but realistically speaking I think its time the Western Cape became independent or even became autonomous an dshut the borders down and send all the foreigners home and let the whites, black and coloureds that want to live in real freedom live in the Western Cape,I mean geeez if South Sudan can do it,so can we,we dont need minerals etc,we have tourism etc. I think its time to form a new party.

  • Mushin - 2011-03-14 09:54

Honestly guyz the WC has alwayz been better than the EC. Aparthied made the EC what it is....... The WC is only nice and clean in White areas and some privilaged Coloured areas. I was born in the WC and im black nothing has changed its only getting worst. Furthermore Black areas the next 5 years.

  • nem - 2011-03-14 10:09

@ mushin,,yo uneed to ask yourself why it has gotten worse? the reason is simple, the anc has bussed thousands in with nowhere to live, you now have 70% of Gugeletu and Khayaletsha now over run with foreigners, you want a better life you know what has to be,look at all the Somalians and Nigerians who have taken over Parow and Bellville area, surely you as a Capetonian should have moved in there???

      Mushin - 2011-03-14 10:35

Its answers like these that convince me of white ppl's ignorance to what is really happening in the WC. Just like in Apartheid, as long as it doesn't effect you and your lovely areas its all GOOD. How do u pay for anything when 80% of the ppl in black areas are unemployed with their degrees and diplomas in WC. Take a look at the employment stats in WC especially. Those blacks that r lucky enough to get jobs never get promoted. As experienced and educated as some are, they report to white ppl with MATRIC!!!

      johan - 2011-03-21 15:15

@mushin, that's a huge LIE, they released the figures of employment you ass. Coloured were the most employed and then black second and whites third by amount of people/amount employed, that reflects the demographics.

When will everything stop being about colour and more about pride, hardwork, service-delivery and unity as a nation? Any party who preaches prejudice based on racism, classism and any other -ism should not be voted into power. Have we forgotten what the true Freedom Fighters of this country stood for, their values and beliefs? It's about time we all stand up in unison against racism, greed, corruption and wastefulness. If you can truly say that the ANC is indeed not corrupt, does not spend millions on extravagant parties and private jet planes, that "leaders" are indeed reprimanded and held liable for racist remarks, that the fact that our roads weren't properly upgraded for 14 years is irrelevant, etc, then sure, go ahead - vote ANC.

The bottom line is the Coloureds in the Western Cape needs to stand together by voting. Don't complain afterwards when things go pear-shaped and we are forced to relocate or immigrate just to be employed. Marius Fransman is nothing more than an ANC pawn. The direct racism being reflected by some members of the ANC, they do not stand a chance of taking control of the Western Cape. This is the province of the Koi San descendants, the majority of whom will not vote for the ANC in the upcoming election. The majority of the migrant supporters are jobless, lacking in education and live here in apalling conditions in the townships. Will they still vote for the party who have failed them? Unless the ANC starts to clean up it's party and getting rid of the rot who sit in government and eat away at our tax money this country is going downhill quickly. WHAT HAS THE ANC ACTUALLY ACHIEVED IN THE WESTERN CAPE. Our entire country is being brought to it's knees as a result of the strikes. So as long as the ANC is allianced with COSATU we will have a disfunctional government and the President does not have a say in the matter. It is time for a real change in politics in this country, with policies for all and not just for the menial majority of HOI PALOI faulties.

  • onetickie - 2011-03-16 17:24

Oe jinne, Jakop Regop. When you open your mouth, I wanna fall over, and not with my legs wide open, but like the prophet Elijah (was it him or not?). When you open your mouth, you speak with FORKED TONGUE. Unity in the ANC is an oxymoron since you took over (is that what they call it?). Or shall we say, a contradiction so that you can also understand. One cannot try to forge unity when you are a divisive force. You divided the ANC, you divided the country. You divided the religious community with your many wives that are against the Bible, you divide the Aids community with your showering and circumcision, you divided the women's rights movement with all your cows, you divided the children's movement who calls for a child's right to grow up with his father. My Jinne. There is not a movement or organisation in this country that you have not divided and then you call for unity. Jinne Jakop Regop, lie back and call yourself THE GREAT DIVIDER. For once you will speak truth and not with a forked tongue.
