Zuma painting insults majority: Radebe

2012-05-21 12:35

Johannesburg - The painting of President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed was an insult to most South Africans, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said on Monday.

"If that is art, I don't know what an insult is," he said in Johannesburg, at a New Age briefing on the transformation of the justice system.

Earlier in the day, the Black Management Forum described the painting as a "tasteless depiction" of Zuma and an "attack on the dignity and institutional office of the president of the Republic."

The forum said it was also an attack on the culture of the majority, the black people of South Africa, and could not go unchallenged.

The artwork did not advance South Africa's constitutional democracy or public discourse on the topic in any way, the forum said.

The SA Students' Congress said the painting was an attack on the morals of African culture.

"This arrogance is ideological and an attack to the very value and moral systems of the majority African people and many other religious persuasions," president Ngoako Selamolela said in a statement.

The 1.85m-high painting titled The Spear is part of artist Brett Murray's Hail to the Thief II exhibition at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.

The portrait has sparked debate about freedom of expression and the right to dignity and privacy.

The African National Congress was set to argue in court on Tuesday that the painting should be removed because it violated Zuma's right to dignity and made a mockery of his office.

definitely not to me.. Your deeds will follow you!!

      Jack - 2012-05-21 12:46

The corruption and greed in government equally insults the majority - and all minority groups too for that matter!

      Henri - 2012-05-21 12:47

FAIL epic FAil Mr President and anc. I wouldnt have even known about this if you didnt make such a big fuzz about it, now the whole world is laughing at you cause you 1st you brought this into the sunlight, 2nd its the truth and 3rd fighting over how disrespectfull it is shows how blind and ignorant you realy are.

      Peter - 2012-05-21 12:51

@Zoolie - I think they trying to get sympathy votes lol. Youve got to be completely mad otherwise to vote these lazy corrupt clowns back in

      Vicker - 2012-05-21 12:51

The tried and trusted ANC propoganda machine's wheels are starting to turn now...

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 12:51

Mine neither! You always reap what you sow!

      Rudi - 2012-05-21 13:08

So let me get this straight. Depicting a philanderer and womaniser (with the family jewels sticking out)on canvas is racist but founding and belonging to organizations like Black Management Forum and Black Lawyers Forum is not. I am not insulted by this painting at all. Why would I be? It's not about me.

      gordon.turner.37 - 2012-05-21 13:12

What the Minister fails to recognise is that the constitution is in place PRECISELY for these moments. When the emotional backlash of a "majority" infringes on the common rights of citizens. What if he decided that all gays, muslims, left handed people offend the majority? Would he run to the courts or threaten anyone? Nothing happens when you are offended, it just forces introspection which is never bad. Those who are in favour of silencing ANYONE with an alternate view is making a rod for their own back.

      Gerhard - 2012-05-21 13:17

The fact is that most government ministers including the president do not understand the constitution or the law.

      Trevor - 2012-05-21 13:28

Was it a small painting or did it have an extra fold? lol

      Nosiphom - 2012-05-21 13:33

not me as well, I'm not insulted. Why do people like to bundle us all together?

      Gichumz - 2012-05-21 13:35

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:51

@Nosiphom - For the same reason that people group all white people as racist. It makes them feel better about their own views

      chrisscrossxyz - 2012-05-21 13:54

You're asking for trouble endorsing this - How could this possibly unite us?

      Mark - 2012-05-21 14:14

Having him as president is actually the insult....

      Tgif - 2012-05-21 14:18

      But is it art?

      Alan - 2012-05-21 14:25

@Tsotsi Baby - a.k.a.Vanish Naidoo (Vanish). Go back to NZ. To everybody else - see - SIZE MATTERS!

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:34

@Tsotsi-Baby - Double standards yet again hey? "no court of law has found him guilty of any alleged charges" the same can be said for Murray... so please take your nonsense else where because i dont think other black people share your sentiments as being victims, dont lower others to your level

      Nyiks11 - 2012-05-21 15:05

Tsotsi-baby " Murray must draw his father naked as an apology " That's some funny ish right there

  • tom.robbins - 2012-05-21 12:39

But then again Jacob Zuma is an insult to most South Africans.

      Alan - 2012-05-21 12:48

If zuma doesn't like it why did he pose for it?

      Raymond - 2012-05-21 13:13

Bambanani, just check on those facts there. He was not voted in by the South African majority. The anc was voted in. He was chosen by the anc clowns at the elective conference.

      Michael - 2012-05-21 13:13

Well said mate, this is the 1st president since 1994 I have really been ashamed of ...

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:14

Bambanani - Because the people that voted for him don't have common sense, such as you apparently. You quickly jump on the band wagon but when the ANC does something wrong which is every day (No school books, corruption, nepotism, Lazyness) you sit quietly in your own little world. Common sense was obviously not something you inherited

      Gerhard - 2012-05-21 13:18

Bambanani he was not voted in by a majority of the people but by a few delegates at a congress.

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:34

@Bambanani - Your constant arguement is race, so by now all we see is blahblahblah... Im a racist blahblahblah

      Amused - 2012-05-21 13:34

@ Bambanani If that were the whole truth you would have a very good and valid point .... .... the unfortunate truth is that if the now famous 'member' were to stand for president on an ANC ticket, without still being attached to Zuma, it would still win !!

      Gichumz - 2012-05-21 13:35

      Nosiphom - 2012-05-21 13:36

Bambanani talk only for yourself. Don't paint us all with your brush!

      Ed - 2012-05-21 13:47

bambanani...dude, remember that SA politics is definitely NOT about the person you ignorant grunt. it is about group politics...unlike developed nation politics where people do vite more for a the actual candidate (like the US primaries currently in process), here we vote en masse for the party and actually have no say over who will lead the party. maybe you should also check last weeks opinuion polls where it shows that JZ is now LESS popular than KM.

      Bambanani - 2012-05-21 13:56

nosipho,i dont speak on your behalf, you have all the right to speak for yourself

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:12

@Tamaranui - What kind of illogical communist spew is that? "More terrorist thats all"

      Antipoaching - 2012-05-21 14:15

@ Bambanani: he does NOT enjoy the approval of most South Africans "Research by marketing company TNS said Zuma’s approval rating – which tracked a steady 48 percent average last year – dropped to 46 percent last month after reaching 55 percent in February." This is an extract from a market research report published on 15/05/2012.....

  • Anthony - 2012-05-21 12:40

is your culture to down grade women and rape them? if so then you have a digusting culture.

Happens in all cultures, Remove your head from the sand and see clearly.

      Schmee - 2012-05-21 14:37

So Tamaranui you are saying it is your culture to down grade women and rape them? I really hope not but that might explain our sad state of affairs in SA. I know far to many black people that have high morals. Somehow I don't think it is in any culture in SA to be like that.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:43

You must be blind or a palin idiota , This is what a first wotld education produced then Apartheid was really for nothing at all cos even with all the educations fools such as yourself have made it to adulthood. Let me break it down for you, Individuals in all cultures South African or not degrade and abuse woman.... Now do you get it ????

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:50

@Tamaranui - So whats your argument then? Thats its fine for Zuma to do it because other people do it? your morals are as short sighted as your own arguments

      Sharon - 2012-05-21 13:17

I'd say. Everyone who is anyone has commented on this painting. Had they ignored it, it would have been forgotten by now. And now newspapers are kept busy by this "convenient" diversion while the important things that they could report on are being ignored.

  • sachasea - 2012-05-21 12:41

Who made Radebe the sole spokesman for all other black people? I highly doubt most people are as offended by the portrait as the ANC cadres seem to be. I'd hazard a guess that most people think it's actually rather funny. It is your choice to be offended by it. I certainly am not.

      Gichumz - 2012-05-21 13:36

      Msika - 2012-05-21 14:22

As a black person myself, I feel offended that an elder (who is black in this case) almost same age as my father, is depicted in this manner. Not a fan of Zoomer and his cronies (still regard him as the worse president to ever rule SA), but from a black culture's perspective, this is disrepectful. It easier to white poeple, because (most of those that i know) do not have problem with exposing their nude bodies (for instance a white daddy wouldn't mind walking infront of his kids wearing his underwear, but that's not the case with most black cultures, if not all of them).

      Alan - 2012-05-21 14:31

Good point Msika. Anyway - I think it is a little distasteful, but all the fuss that has been created has only made it worse for Pres. Zuma. Satire, on the other hand is a normal and useful tool in a democracy, and has it's uses. I think that the behaviour of Pres. Zuma has contributed largely to people taking great interest in the painting.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:46

Seems some people have no clue how to behave responsibly in a Democracy

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:51

      Raymond - 2012-05-21 13:15

craig, why should the DA comment? It is a personal issue, not a political one. The anc have chosen to politicize it. Morons, the lot of you.

      Gerhard - 2012-05-21 13:20

I am trying to guess JZ's IQ. Any suggestions?

      Raymond - 2012-05-21 13:54

Gerhard, let's go with the total amount of thumbs downs for your comment. That should be sufficient.

Ed - 2012-05-21 13:56 we will have to be content to listen to the details of JZ's sorry life! like, did you know that for 3 weekends of last month, he spent time with each wife??? also, that apparently Obama or someone asked him recently about which wife he decided to bring along to a huge summit!!! waaahahahahahaha, what a joke he is. maybe this is a good thing. it is getting people talking about what a nut-job he is... PS: I'd guess he is at about an IQ level of 75. a gifted retard.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:03

Malema seems to be the only politician with a spine to get these detractors into line.....

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:13

@Tamaranui - For a communist your supporting the wrong party, just an FYI

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:23

Peter, Now that I have been here for a few months I must say that My militant side has definitely grown. You people have no idea what it took to get us to this point and yet yous continue to disparage us. I will first in line to finish this battle.

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:41

@Tamaranui - So you dont disagree your a communist and you are blood thirsty as well. And as a matter of fact i know exactly what it took to get us here today, people like you playing the victim card instead of trying to uplift.

You are just as big a failure here..and if I were you I would refrain from commenting cos every comment exposes your absulute ignorance..perhaps I'm cruel..I should have sympathy for such a retard, so hush and crawl back under that rock or whatever you use to shelter your idiotic person.

Can someone just get Mugabe's comment about this portrait.

      Henri - 2012-05-21 12:51

its the fault of the imperiolist in england that zooma cant keep it in his pants, look even his drawings want their genetails out in the public. it is cause they have kept us under their rules that we now have to walk with trousers and not able to put our privates inside our pants.

      Anthony - 2012-05-21 12:52

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:01

@Ed - He has no sense of humour, I've read articles that he replies on, hes a troll and a racist and actually 100% agrees with old Robz across the border.

  • Bambanani - 2012-05-21 12:43

any person defending this called art should have his or her head examined,it matters not whether we differ with zuma, but to paint someone,an adult naked, think, if it was your mother or father.this cant be justified.

      Eternity - 2012-05-21 12:51

My parents don't flaunt their political power and shame my country. He is in the public spotlight and should behaviour appropriately. I cringe at the thought of the worlds reaction to the shenanigans of our president. This artwork just hits home want we are all thinking

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 12:56

If you are President of a country, you should be setting a very great example. Yet Zuma is running around srobbing everything he can. He deserves this. He is a disgrace to himself! And an even bigger disgrace to this country!

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:18

You obviously have no grasp on the idea of what art is, which just goes to show your narrow minded mentality. When something doesn't make sense you obviously say to yourself "let me express my moronic views so all can see what an idiot i really am"

      Gerhard - 2012-05-21 13:23

This is not a commissioned portrait of Zuma but a picture of the state of the nation under Zuma.

      ChronicDJ - 2012-05-21 13:26

Zuma is likely not any of the commentators' mother or father...he is the DEMOCRATICALLY elected president of South Africa. It is our right, as South African citizens to critize the president and the government. Beside wasn't the whole of the Zuma camp (especially Malema at that point) being very critical of our then President Thabo Mbeki. Double-standards being preached as usual. Do as say don't do as I do is the clear message.

      Bambanani - 2012-05-21 13:30

peter dont fool yourself ,if your racist friends tell u that u are intelligent they were fooling you, your comment are nothing but representative of the thinking of criminal racist forefathers.

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:36

@Bambanani - Lol ah you make me laugh, so by now, all we see when we read your comment is blahblahblah... Im a racist... blahblahblah

Ed - 2012-05-21 14:01 right there with you dude! and i also think that we should maybe all start reading the bible for 6hours a day, that we should never be allowed to swear, that TV should be banned, or at least only broadcast from 6pm till 8pm, that all tv broadcasts should only the The News as declared by the ANC and Richard Mdluli, that all white South Africans be issued with a 'pass book' or be forced to join the ANC, that all cars be banned so that we can all rather walk to work, that we all be forced to sleep in mud-huts and have at least 6 wives (i kinda like that one) and that we also all shoot ourselves in the feet....yes both feet cos that way we all look like retards. or we can just all change our names to Jacoz Zuma to truly make fools of ourselves.

      Eternity - 2012-05-21 14:02

I still don't see why this artwork keeps getting labelled as racist. Political yes. Racist no. Something I think a lot of people are forgetting is this not just simple a picture of a man with his privates displayed. The artwork defiantly references a poster of Vladimir Lenin, who was instrumental in the Russian revolution which lead to their dictator leadership - he was succeeded by Joseph Stalin after all. It is a political piece where the artist conveying his view of our country’s current political position. In the end you reap what you sow, black, white, coloured or purple, it doesn’t matter

  • Willie - 2012-05-21 12:43

"Any political agenda and organization which doesn't begin with personal responsibility is just half the argument. It's just not going to succeed." Radebe, the rape of justice and the rule of law as perpetrated and perpetuated by the cANCer is a much bigger insult. BTW, the majority of SA is so undeducated thanks to the cANCer that I bet most of them have not even heard about this or seen it. certainly most of SA has much bigger worries. for example, the majority worries about where to get a job, how to survice everyday with the crime rates we have to live in. how to fight the Guvement each time they want to invent new ways of fleecing the citizens (E Tolls). having a President who has no morals, no ethics and does have 700 pending cases (that can and should be reinstated) is a much bigger insult

why was the song \kill the boer\ banned *thinking*

      mooka.pheto - 2012-05-21 14:15

The way you talk about yourself and your life - your story - has a great deal to do with what shows up in your day-to-day experience. Your thoughts create filters through which you view your life. If you think of yourself as a victim, you filter all that happens to you through the lens of a victim and you find plenty of evidence to support that viewpoint. That’s why the orientation you adopt is so important: it exerts a powerful influence on your life direction. -

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:16

@mooka.pheto - Because it was aimed at an entire group of people and incited violence against them, care to share how that is the same as this?

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:24

@mooka.pheto - Well said thats exactly the truth of the matter. People will always try find support for that which they do not understand and attempt to make it a negative thing if they disagree mearly because they cannot understand the context of the matter at hand. Thats why i cannot see how this is racist, but like you said, its about your view point. So if people want to see a racist painting thats all they will see. Even though it goes against the principle which is art and is up to the person to form there own understanding an interpretation. Yet people fail to see this and would rather try and gather as much support as possible so they can enforce their own views and not let people think for themselves

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-21 12:49

This is such a nice opportunity to play the race card, hey Jeff? Let's get some real division going over here. Let's chuck in some hatred as well. ANC forte.

  • ianingwe - 2012-05-21 12:50

This will be a rigorous test for the south African justice system if nothing else!

      alansmartSnr - 2012-05-21 16:00

Why would we worry about that.. the horse has already bolted and millions of this exelent piece of art and historical memoribilia are in the public domain already. Court's dicision will be of no consequence either way. POWER TO THE PEOPLE POWER TO THE D.A.

  • winston.mullany - 2012-05-21 12:51

If it was a white person, we wouldn't be bothered as the same as we couldn't be bothered that its Ol' Zooma! I personally couldn't care less!

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-05-21 12:52

And STILL nothing on Ayanda Mabulu...

      Msika - 2012-05-21 14:35

      Did you mean, Ayanda Mbuli?

  • wayne.nkuna - 2012-05-21 12:54

what majority us he refering to???? Its Clear as daylight that no one sees Zuma as a representative of the majority, unless that so called majority is as moralistic as Zuma is. Mr radebe please find your groundings properly.(personally i have zero respect for Zuma and i am sure many share this sentiment )

  • Kyle - 2012-05-21 12:54

I think it is unfair that the whole country must be subjected to a racism row because of Jacob Zuma and his penis. His approval ratings are below 50%, so half the country don't like him anyway. He is a terrible president. That is why his penis is hanging out. Not because he's black. Please people, lets not fight about this, it is silly to call this racist. Calling it racist is what makes it racist.

      Cristina - 2012-05-21 13:12

      Fuly agreed!!!

  • Rob - 2012-05-21 12:54

Freedom of expression you useless idiot. Let the people draw pictures of whatever they want. Did Zuma pose nude for this portrait? If so, then I can understand why he wouldn't want people to see it but who the hell cares otherwise. Guess I'm not part of this so called "majority". Did we conduct a national census over the weekend that I'm not aware of?

  • Kyle - 2012-05-21 12:54

  • Jackie - 2012-05-21 12:54

Well thats the way he chooses to behave? How can that be insulting? His behaviour is more likely to be insulting to his loyal voters and the rest of the nation. Sorry for you - you do the crime you do the time.

  • Peter - 2012-05-21 12:54

"This arrogance is ideological and an attack to the very value and moral systems of the majority African people and many other religious persuasions," Is he describing the ANC there?

      Bambanani - 2012-05-21 14:05

peter,he made a mistake he was describing the well behave and well educated and GODLY like white people.

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:45

@Bambanani - Hate white people much? Funny how you cannot argue a point with out showing your racism and blind devotion for those that are actually stealing from you, you use no facts because there are no facts to support your views. You are a racist and nothing you say matters in civilized society, perhaps you should find a country where your views are actually accepted like in Zimbabwe perhaps, SA is a democracy not a communist state for you to oppress those who you feel are not worthy. When you have some factual evidence then you can comment

  • Su - 2012-05-21 12:54

The more they harp on the subject the more valuable the painting becomes. Who is going to start the bidding??

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 13:14

I just wish i had painted this picture first, cause now i would be rich! Damnit!

      Peter - 2012-05-21 13:23

@Chilli - Rather have bought it because who ever owns it is going to make a mint back on reselling after all this attention, all thanks to the ANC of course

      winston.mullany - 2012-05-21 13:26

I wouldn't buy it, I wouldn't want that thing 'hanging' in my place!

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:10

Yep, you s will hang this tripe in your homes

      Peter - 2012-05-21 14:47

@Tamaranui - of course not, who wants a corrupt officials painting in their home?

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 15:30

      Not Me Peter

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 15:35

I just want the money... Like Zuma, Juju, or any other government crook!

      Gouws ,,,,you will never know

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-05-21 12:57

The ANC has many cronies (balls), hanging on to the presidents office. They have no alternative but to say that the painting is disgraceful, which of course it is. However the more they piss into the wind the wetter they become. At least the Nation is beginning to understand who the presidents 'generals' are now that they are being exposed.

  • Yvonne - 2012-05-21 12:57

If people feel offended by this picture why still show it. This is one of the reason why SA will never move forward. The artist and the gallery single handed destroy what South African try to build up on ground level. The artist are showing the Youth not to have respect for the elderly . Automatically the word racism comes up although I personally feel the artist is wrong.

  • Lazarus - 2012-05-21 12:58

I am one of the majority and am insulted by leaders who think that they own this land and its people.Insulted by corrupt officials leaving the majority to eat the grass.I am insulted by leaders who think leadership means possession.

  • Tygerr - 2012-05-21 12:59

Ironically, the majority wouldn't have even known that this painting existed if the ANC hadn't made such a fuss about it...

      Anthony - 2012-05-21 13:05

      they still don,t

  • Daniel - 2012-05-21 13:00

isn't this the same genius who signed off on the e-tolls...

  • Daniel - 2012-05-21 13:02

My biggest problem is the organ painted on his crotch when clearly it belongs on his forehead

  • revaro.winkler - 2012-05-21 13:03

that painting is a thread to the countries leaders

  • talita.vandermerwe - 2012-05-21 13:03

The ANC is not so stupid after all. The are diverting all the attention away from the Mduli and e-tolling mess.

  • Cape - 2012-05-21 13:05

Let the world see the disgraceful ANC; this is what happens when you conspire to get a leader (Mbeki) out of control via back seat politicking (Zuma); you are making your bed and soon you will all lay in it...

  • Cristina - 2012-05-21 13:07

    Not me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rlm.motlanthe - 2012-05-21 13:10

Hey Im black and Im not in the least bit offended dear Mr Radebe... I feel like this saga is dragging now.

      shylock.ncube - 2012-05-21 13:21

I think there is something wrong with not fill offended with such disrespect of the head of state

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-21 14:12

Please you have been indoctrinated by your Afropean colleagues. If you don't see the wrong in this then you too should reside in Europe somewhere.

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 15:37

@ Shylock... why? Please explain yourself?!

  • Peter - 2012-05-21 13:10

If the ANC believe in freedom of expression in art as long as it doesnt impugn the dignity of another, why did they ban the Elephant sculptures in Durban? Because the late John Mcunu (ANC leader in eThekweni) demanded they resembled the IFP much for freedom..

  • 1amAlan - 2012-05-21 13:12

Ho hum. Getting boring now. BTW minister, below 50% rating and support basis. Last time I checked you had to get more than 50% to score majority.

      Gerhard - 2012-05-21 14:27

They only need 30% to pass. When he gets below 30%, they will drop it to 20%.

  • Kimayne - 2012-05-21 13:12

This is why our country is in such a state. Our ruling party is so busy looking for the next \racist\ card that they fail to recognise the needs of their own people. Truth is, its not exactly like our presedent can keep it in his pants anyway!!

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-05-21 16:10

      No he cant can he...

  • Loo - 2012-05-21 13:14

Oh OK .. tell me then ... is random unprotected sex an african culture ??!!. Because THAT is what that painting depicts. ie. "A man that is ruled by his penis" If this is not true .. then why does he have unprotected random sex (outside of marriage). Does polygamy mean you can have sex with anyone you want apart from your wives too ???????

      alansmartSnr - 2012-05-21 16:28

.. and he paid her too..Was she a "working girl". lets not forget that was the reason he was found "not guilty" .. conclusion.. married and still fks with prostitutions.. not my judgement..courts conclusion.
