Zuma ready for leadership fight

2012-12-16 07:06

Bloemfontein - There was “nothing wrong” with ANC members accepting nominations and contesting positions in the party's leadership, President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday.

“People think there is something wrong with accepting nominations.

There is nothing wrong,” he said to applause from guests at the Progressive Business Forum gala dinner.

Deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe has accepted nominations to replace Zuma at the African National Congress's national conference in Mangaung (Bloemfontein).

Zuma used the example of when Harry Gwala ran against former ANC leader Walter Sisulu despite knowing he would lose.

“Harry Gwala, contested Walter Sisulu… and if he got ten votes, it would be too much,” he said.

Zuma said that when Gwala was asked why he ran he said that it was to teach the young members of the ANC about democracy.

“Contestations were there [when the ANC was formed] in 1912 in Mangaung,” he said.

Zuma said ANC members were very passionate about the organisation.

“They are vibrant, and they sing and make signs with their hands,” he joked.

Members who supported Zuma for a second term often hold up two fingers, while those supporting Motlanthe roll their hands in a gesture synonymous with calling for the substitution of a soccer player.

“Democracy is about free expression and free choice. [it is about] people not being afraid to express themselves. That is what the ANC is doing. “

Zuma said the during 100 years of existence, the ANC had grown from being an organisation of people labeled as “terrorists” to the ruling party of a country.

“There are many organisations that have come and gone, and the ANC grows stronger,” he said.

“The ANC will still be there at the next centenary. We are blessed we are here this time around. “

He said the ANC was often labelled as corrupt, but the allegations were untrue.

“Before 1994, if you spoke about corruption you were likely to get unwelcomed visitors,” he joked.

“We have created vehicles to fight corruption, and we are branded as the most corrupt organisation.”

He also wished former ANC president Nelson Mandela a “speedy recovery”.

Mandela spent the last week in a Pretoria hospital where he was being treated for a lung infection and gallstones.

The ANC's national conference is scheduled to start on Sunday.

The party's top six officials, as well as the national executive committee members would be elected by delegates over the course of the week.

This is like the QF battle of the Boks against Aus in WC 2011. In hindsight everyone knows (including Bryce) - the game was rigged. Aus could have fielded 15 tannies in wheelchairs and would have still lost. Zuma has already rigged this one - one just need to look forward to the gifts of patronage in the next 7 years to see who was rigged. Democracy, my Bryce Lawrence. Thinking off, I need to go to the loo.

      mshiniboys - 2012-12-16 09:00

The work that has been done by the ANC does not equal the budget given to them.let us start with the freedom charter that our leaders always talk about all the time as if they understand it.where is the free education and why did they defy the part that says govenment land shold be given to people for housing? Lenasia? And many other places where people have been evicted and land sold to property developers? Mina nawe in Daveyton for example.thats govenment land now sold for R70000 a stand in a poor community. Where are jobs and dignity?.if you want to be praised keep promises and follow the policies and kee promises.hosting expensive parties and giving food parcels and grants is not something we can boast about in terms of a progressive society. In fact it is patronising to most people.where are good hospitals and schools.go and look at the condition of all govenment facilities arround the country and tell me they are not in the brink of collapse.i dont want to mention the water crisis across the country.as a person who vote the ANC all the time these are my concerns.RDP houses are built today next year they fall....yet they count when speeches are made?

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-12-16 09:10

Orwellian to say the least... Consider a few extracts 1. Zuma ready.....well that will be a first considering this has nothing to do with his trousers. 2. Leadership....well I guess that by the standards shown recently nothing is any worse. But to use leadership in the same phrase as Zuma is pushing my credibility beyond rational limits. 3. Fight....with so many opportunities/needs for sharing common objectives and working at them as a team this constant use of inflammatory, aggressive terminology belongs somewhere else. Maybe the school playground, the Zulu kraals or Argentina (Falklands). Stop it now! I think that these points from the heading illustrates what I am trying to say, now re-read the piece and see if there are more phopars (http://thesaurus.com/browse/mistake)

Read the newspapers etc and you will see that it has been proven over & over again how big a criminal he is.

  • truthbetold221 - 2012-12-16 09:29

Note that whenever a major decision has to be made concerning the ANC you are reminded of Apartheid.1. ANC feeds from division between blacks and whites during elections.2. It makes ANC government look less evil between the two.3. It drives people's emotions preventing them from making doubt decisions.4. It makes us black people feel like we owe the ANC. 5. Lastly, it makes blacks hate the idea of a white president/leadership. So expect the ANC to remind you how different you are from the other race and to revive your apartheid scars at least twice every month. It works for them.

      truthbetold221 - 2012-12-16 09:33

I was shocked the other day when watching the news. Zuma's daughter was on the news and she had asked her father(Zuma).Daddy why do you want more children. Apparently he replied to his daughter, to make the ANC Bigger. As a Christian I do believe this is a foolish statement. As a President and leader of a country it is about serving the people of the country, wether you are black, colored, white, muslim, jew, Christian. It should be about serving out of love for all people
