Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma is set to visit Algeria and Nigeria for talks at the weekend, the department of international relations said on Friday.

He was expected to start the two-nation visit on Sunday.

Zuma would first meet Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for bilateral consultations.

"The visit takes place within the context of the historic and excellent bilateral relations that exist between South Africa and Algeria," department spokesperson Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

Zuma would then head for Abuja, Nigeria, on 16 April, for a meeting with his counterpart Goodluck Jonathan.

"[The meeting is] within the context of placing focus on the bilateral, regional, continental and international relations between the two countries," said Monyela.

Several agreements are expected to be signed during the working visit.
