Johannesburg - Former ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu has been appointed as the ruling party's new chief whip in Parliament, EWN reported on Tuesday.

It quoted secretary general Gwede Mantashe as confirming the appointment. Mantashe also confirmed the news on SAfm.

Mthembu will succeed Stone Sizane who quit as chief whip three weeks ago to take up a position as ambassador to Germany.

The ANC announced at the beginning of March that Sizani was being redeployed. He had been the ANC's chief whip since 2013, replacing Mathole Motshekga.

Last week Mthembu expressed outrage at the Gupta family after Deputy Minister of Finance Mcebisi Jonas's explosive announcement that he was offered the ministry before Nhlanhla Nene was removed. Mthembu said he believed the ANC should "deal with this arrogance of the Guptas once and for all".
