Pretoria - Former Springbok and rugby legend Jan Ellis was seriously wounded in an armed robbery near Cullinan, east of Pretoria, on Friday night.

Ellis was shot in the back and the head. He was rushed to hospital and is in a serious condition.

Police spokesperson, Inspector Gideon Thessner, said five armed men entered the premises from where Ellis was running his auctioneering business earlier on Friday evening.

Details are still sketchy, but it seems that Ellis was apparently held up while the robbers demanded money. They then shot him.

The suspects fled and are still at large.

Ellis represented South Africa as a flanker in several tests. He played most of his rugby for the then South West Africa, and later also turned out for Transvaal.
