Boks: Coetzee’s ligaments intact

Johannesburg - Lock Victor Matfield and flank Marcell Coetzee are the only injury concerns for the Springboks ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks at Emirates Airline Park.

Matfield injured his hamstring early in the 24-20 loss to Australia in Brisbane at the weekend, while Coetzee limped off with a knee injury in the second half.

Coetzee’s injury looked quite severe but Bok team doctor Craig Roberts confirmed on Monday that the loose forward had not injured his ligaments.

"Thankfully it looks like his ligaments are intact,” Roberts said in Johannesburg on Monday. “It looks more like a bad contusion to the quad. (But) we’ll have to do a few more tests to be sure."

It’s unlikely that Coetzee will face the All Blacks on Saturday, while Matfield may also sit out.

"Victor sustained a hamstring injury. At this stage he (Matfield) is doubtful for the weekend, but we'll only make that call later in the week".

Kick-off for Saturday’s Test is scheduled for 17:05.
