Ex-Bok lock wanted in Wales

Cape Town - Welsh club Cardiff Blues reportedly have their sights set on signing former Springbok lock Franco van der Merwe.

The 33-year-old, who played one Test for the Boks against the All Blacks in 2013, has been a star for Irish club Ulster since joining them from the Lions in 2014.

However, according to the Wales Online website, Van der Merwe could be on his way to the Arms Park.

Born in Paarl, Van der Merwe began his career with the Potchefstroom-based Leopards in 2004, before switching to the Golden Lions in 2006.

He stepped up to the Lions’ Super Rugby side in 2007 and made 85 appearances for them over seven years.

He has made 67 appearances for Ulster, initially arriving in Ireland on a two-year deal, before signing a one-year extension to cover this season.

His move to the Blues would need approval from the Welsh Rugby Union.
