Granollers into last 8

Kitzbuehel - Defending champion Marcel Granollers of Spain has defeated Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Kitzbuehel Cup on Thursday, while top-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany lost.

Granollers, seeded second, used all five break chances against Schwartzman to set up a quarterfinal against Dominic Thiem, who beat Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-6 (3).

The 20-year-old Austrian, the youngest player in the top 50, came back from a break down twice in the second set to reach his third career quarter-final.

David Goffin of Belgium won the last five games to complete a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kohlschreiber.

Goffin held on to an early break to win the opening set, and saved three set points against the German after dropping 5-2 down in the second.

The match was postponed from Wednesday due to rain.

Including three challenger events he won, Goffin enjoyed his 17th straight win without dropping a set.

The fourth-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy plays Juan Monaco of Argentina in the last eight.

Seppi's second-round opponent Pere Riba of Spain withdrew beforehand with a viral infection, while Monaco eliminated seventh-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3, 6-4 in a match that was suspended for three hours in the second set because of rain.

Meanwhile, Maximo Gonzalez of Argentin reached the semi-final after he upset third-seeded Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while Goffin went onto down Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-2, 6-1 in his second match of the day.

The two remaining quarter-finals were postponed until Friday.

The 104th-ranked Gonzalez lost the second set from 4-2 up but broke Rosol twice in the final set.

He will next play Goffin, who hasn't dropped a set in 18 straight wins since Wimbledon, including three challenger events he won.
