Komphela critical of Chiefs display

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is adamant that his side played to Bidvest Wits' strengths instead of their own.

The Clever Boys defeated Amakhosi 2-1 at the Bidvest Stadium in the opening league fixture of the Absa Premiership.

Elias Pelembe put the ball in the back of the net with a slanted header following a deep cross from Daine Klate while captain Thulani Hlatshwayo doubled the score in the second-half.

Lorenzo Gordinho pulled back a late goal for the visitors, but it was all gone as Wits held on tightly to claim the three points.

"I think one of the things that we did wrong tonight was we played to their strength, we allowed them to keep the ball in the air and didn't bring the ball down and play," Komphela said after the game as quoted by KickOff.

"Secondly I think their pressing game was better than ours - they showed more desire than we did. Those are the two defining things that I thought if we could have dealt with better we could have come through.

"We knew that would happen and you try your utmost best to be ready for it and as it happens you say, "but goodness me how could it happen?" when you knew it was going to happen.

"We seemed to be reluctant to play under pressure and as a result their pressing game overcame our possession and also they kept the ball in the air and we didn't bring it down," stated Komphela.
