SA's Frittelli earns spot in Masters field

Cape Town - South Africa's Dylan Frittelli was one of four golfers to secure their last-minute spots in the field for next week's Masters.

Players from the top 50 in the world rankings during the week prior to the tournament who had not already qualified, secured trips to Augusta National.

Frittelli joins compatriots Branden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen and former winners Charl Schwartzel and Trevor Immelman in the field.

Four-time Major champion Ernie Els received a letter welcoming him as an honorary invitee, but will not compete.

Those who are in the top 50 who were not previously in the field also included Cameron Smith of Australia (No 44), Japan's Satoshi Kodaira (No 46) and American Chez Reavie (No 48).

Last year, Frittelli claimed two European Tour wins at the Lyoness Open in June and Mauritius Open in December.

That brings the field to 86 who are expected to play, making it the smallest field since 1997 - the year Tiger Woods won his first Masters by 12 shots.

The winner of this week's Houston Open, if not already in the field, could make an unexpected trip straight from Texas to Magnolia Lane.

The 2018 Masters will take place at Augusta National Golf Club from April 5-8.
