Semenya set for 400m debut

Cape Town - Olympic 800m women's champion Caster Semenya will make her debut in the 400m in at the final meeting of the 2016 Diamond League series in Brussels on Friday night.

Semenya had flirted with the possibility of taking on the shorter distance in Rio, but decided against it to focus on winning gold in the 800m.

It was a decision that paid off as she secured Team South Africa its second gold of the Games and 10th medal of the Games, but the 25-year-old feels that the time is right to now make the shift.

In April this year Semenya set a personal best time in the 400m (50.74 seconds) at the SA Championships, but she will have to improve that significantly if she is to make her mark on the event moving forward.

Other South Africans taking part in Friday’s meeting include Olympic long jump silver medalist, Luvo Manyongo, who jumps from 20:45, Wenda Nel in the women’s 400m hurdles (20:04) and Carina Horn in the women’s 100m (20:13).

Broadcast starts at 19:45 on SuperSport 7 and 9 with Semenya’s race scheduled to start at 20:22.
