The number of fires in Brazil's Amazon basin is still on the rise, even though the government has banned burning, officials said Saturday.
A 60-day ban on burning in Brazil takes effect Thursday after a global outcry over fires raging in the Amazon and data showing hundreds of new blazes in the rainforest.
Record fires are raging in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, with more than 2,500 fires currently burning. They are collectively emitting huge amounts of carbon, with smoke plumes visible thousands of kilometres away.
Officials at the Cosme e Damia children's hospital in Porto Velho, on the edge of the Amazon, reported a "sharp increase" in respiratory illnesses.
