A monthly consumer food basket tracked by the National Agricultural Marketing Council shows average year-on-year inflation of 4.1% – but the prices of some types of food rocketed far beyond that.
Lower food prices have helped offset the impact of a higher VAT rate and recent fuel price hikes on the overall consumer price index, according to analysts.
A notable uptick of South Africa’s headline food price inflation is unlikely, says Wandile Sihlobo.
South Africans are paying 13% more for meat than they were a year ago, said an economist.
