Cape Town - Huawei has launched a new smartphone to cater to a growing market that demands luxury features at a lower cost.

The Ascend P7 sports 4G connectivity, a 12.7cm display and 13 megapixel main camera.

The company said that it was on course to take on its rivals with the new device. Huawei generally prices its devices lower than Asian rivals and currently offers the cheapest Android smartphone in SA in the 858 at R399.

"We are now ranked number three globally in terms of smartphone shipments, and our brand recognition is growing steadily in key regions such as China and Western Europe," said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group.

In particular, the secondary camera which mainly used for the growing popularity of selfies, is rated at 8 megapixels, which should deliver a better quality for instant self portraits.

The phone is protected with the latest generation of Gorilla Glass on the back and front which give the device an elegant finish and appeal to a growing number of people who are migrating to smartphones.

Huawei is pitching the new phone to younger people who are increasingly using smartphones as life loggers and the wide angle cameras have an f/2.0 aperture, which should deliver crisp low-light pictures.

The Ascend also features Voice Photo, which adds a 10 second audio clip to images.

It is expected that the Huawei Ascend P7 will be available in SA within weeks when pricing will announced.
