Cape Town - The winners of the MTN Business App of the Year Awards were announced at an event at Melrose Arch.

In a nod to the rise of e-commerce platforms making their way into mainstream or "real-world" economics, SnapScan won Best HTML 5 app.

The application allows users to pay with mobile phones at participating vendors.

"On behalf of the MTN Business team, we would like to congratulate the SnapScan team for walking away with the Prestigious Best App title this year," said Nomalanga Nkosi, general manger of Enterprise Marketing at MTN SA.

Applications designed to exploit the anticipated growth in e-commerce included locally-developed shopping site PriceCheck Mobile which won Best Blackberry app.

Local developers

PriceCheck also won the BlackBerry App of the year on the BlackBerry 10 platform.

Reading application bookly won the category of Most innovative app. The e-reading app incorporates social media features into content consumption.

"The apps that are successful are the ones that are able to integrate completely into our 'mobile lives' and the Awards ceremony last night highlighted the incredible work being undertaken locally to truly drive content in innovative ways," Nkosi said.

Sponsor MTN said that the awards should motivate local developers to produce relevant applications that would solve local challenges.

"The aim of these awards is to provide an environment that allows local developers to thrive and really showcase the originality of their market approach and this can only be achieved when we continue to work together with our partners in the industry who share in this vision," Nkosi said.

With an estimated population of around one billion people, internet penetration in Africa stands at about 15.6%, less than half of the global average of 34.3%. However, actual internet users are a low as between 5% and 7%.

It is expected that a significant number of new internet users in developing countries will be mobile users.

"The calibre of entries received this year was truly amazing with 250 entries received overall - the panel of judges certainly did not have an easy task deciding upon a winner," said Nkosi.
