Cape Town - Local Apple distributor the Core Group has announced that the new generation Apple iPad will be launched in South Africa.

According to Core Group, the iPad Air will be launched in SA by 6 December.

The LTE-capable device will have retail prices that start at R5 999 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and climb to R11 499 for the 128GB version with Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity.

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of iPad Air in South Africa. iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead," said Rutger-Jan van Spaandonk, executive director at the Core Group.

Despite the hype though, the device with a 24.6cm display may face an uphill battle for market share in SA.

Market share

According to the Mobility 2014 research study, conducted by World Wide Worx with the backing of First National Bank, Samsung dominates the tablet market in the country with a 52% market share.

The survey found that Apple's share was 23% and critically, of the adults who said they intended to buy a tablet, 44% opted for a Samsung product, while 32% chose the iPad.

Apple is working hard in developing markets to generate sales of its products and consumers who buy the new iPad will qualify for the following free apps: iWork (Keynote, Pages and Numbers) and iLife (Garageband, iPhoto and iMove).

Industry research firm Gartner warned that as the holiday season approached, consumers would be less inclined to buy larger screen tablets.

"Continuing on the trend we saw last year, we expect this holiday season to be all about smaller tablets as even the long-term holiday favourite - the smartphone - loses its appeal," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

Vodacom and MTN have not yet released details on ordering the new iPad on their respective websites, and customers can contact the iStore if they wish to purchase the latest version of the iPad.
