Cape Town - Sony Mobile has launched its new tablet in SA as the company moves to capitalise on the hype of the Xperia Z smartphone.

The Xperia Tablet Z has a 25.6cm display and is powered by a 1.5Ghz quad core processor that puts it near the top in terms of mobile device performance.

Sony though, wants users to focus on the user experience rather than the hardware specifications of the Tablet Z.

"The unit is designed to entertain," Andrew Fraser, channel marketing manager for Sony Mobile South Africa told News24 at the local launch.

Many of the same technologies employed in the Xperia Z smartphone are incorporated into the tablet, including Sony Mobile Bravia engine that delivers sharper image quality.

One of the main selling points of the Android-powered tablet is the water resistance to 1m depth for 30 minutes and robust built quality.

It has an 8 megapixel main camera and 2 megapixel front facing camera and records video in Sony's "Exmor R for mobile" format.

There are four speakers built into the tablet which delivers adequate sound, but its neat party trick is the ability to connect to NFC-enabled devices so that multimedia content can be shared with peripherals.

Sony announced that it supports open standards with the tablet which now has a standard micro-SD card slot and has expanded the functionality of the tablet to use it as a TV remote.

"Built into it is a multi-brand remote control so you can control all of your devices directly from the unit," said Fraser.

Exact pricing is not officially available for the device, but Sony expects it to retail for around R9 000 and it should be initially available from mobile operators within weeks.
