World Class workshop set to thrill

2014-03-04 13:02
Cape Town - As the 2014 World Class Regional Finals heat up in preparation for the National round and much-anticipated Global Final, the second Workshop session will put top bartenders through their paces with a “Whisky Sensorium” themed challenge, aimed at honing their skills in creating immersive sensory experiences through their mixology skills.

The Workshop will take place in Cape Town’s The Pepper Club on the 4th and 5th of March, and will see the Cape’s Regional Finalists competing in two challenges to test their sensory mettle.

From here the competition will move on to Johannesburg and Durban

Johannesburg workshop: 18th - 19th March
Durban Workshop: 11th - 12th March

Confirmed judges for this Workshop include mixology all-star and Global Finalist 2013, Nick Koumbarakis, South African National Flair Championship architect Travis Kuhn and Diageo Reserve Brand Ambassador Gareth Wainwright.

“The second World Class Regional Workshop, ‘Whisky Sensorium,’ will challenge the competing bartenders to look further than just taste and smell. It will be all about creating experiences that satisfy all senses through elements like temperatures, textures, sounds and feelings. Not an easy feat!” Says Nick Koumbarakis.

The first challenge of the “Whisky Sensorium” will see bartenders taking part in a Blind Spirits Tasting, involving a selection of whisky brands that bartenders must taste, evaluate and identify. This exercise will include single malts and blended whiskeys, testing the palates and whisky knowledge of the contenders.

Secondly, bartenders will face a Mystery Box Challenge, whereby they will be presented with a selection of mystery ingredients to use in creating a luxury cocktail, all the while under extreme time pressure.

The bartenders will have access to the full and distinguished reserve portfolio, as well as basic sweet and sour ingredients.

As Regional contenders fight for their spot in the National round, the Global Final is also rapidly approaching, with the location for 2014’s prestigious and internationally anticipated Final recently being announced.

In 2014, the search for the World’s Best Bartender will return to its British roots, taking place in two locations in Great Britain, London and Scotland, from the 28th of July to the 1st of August. This thrilling Global Final sees 50 of the world’s best bartenders competing for the most coveted accolade in the luxury drinking industry.

“I am excited to witness the level of talent expressed over the Regional Finals, and look forward to the National Finals, in which South Africa’s finest mixologist will be crowned and move on to represent South Africa in the quest to win the Global Final,” says Diageo’s National Category Development Manager, Dominic Bothner.
