Dubai - Just a few weeks after opening its doors to its first batch of passenger aircraft, Dubai World Central welcomed aviation enthusiasts from across the globe to the prestigious Dubai Airshow on Sunday.

The five day event is set to be a mixture of spectacular air displays and has already seen local carrier, Emirates, signing the largest-ever aircraft order with Boeing as well as Airbus.

SAPA reports that Emirates signed deals for 150 Boeing 777X aeroplanes as well as 50 Airbus A380s.

The company, owned by the emirate of Dubai, will pay $76bn (R773bn at R10.70/dollar)  for the Boeing aircraft and 23 billion dollars for the Airbuses, it said.

As he signed the deals with the chief executives of the two manufacturers at the Dubai Air Show, Emirates chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said that deliveries of the 777Xs would start in 2020.
