Paris – Low-cost airline Easyjet was sentenced to a fine of €50 000 (about R752 400.16 at R11.01/$ ) on Tuesday, by the Court of Appeal of Paris, for forcibly removing a disabled passenger from a plane because she was travelling unaccompanied.

The court did not follow the prosecution's submissions requesting a fine of €70 000, but went well beyond the sentence for the initial request of €5 000.

When the incident occurred in March, 2010, Marie-Patricia Hoarau, 39, who uses wheelchair mobility after an ATV accident, was escorted from the British Airline plane after being unable to reach an emergency exit independently. Hoarau was escorted off the plane despite a pilot travelling on the same plane, agreeing to accompany her.

EasyJet Spokesperson, Philippe Van Der Meulen told AFP that his surmise on the decision to fine Easyjet is based on emotional consideration and activism, and not flight safety, particularly the safety of disabled people.
CEO of EasyJet France, François Bacchetta added that improvements to the quality of service, especially to people with disabilities, will be made, and that much has been done since the incident in 2010.

EasyJet is reported to be appearing for an unrelated charge of discrimination with a disabled passenger on 19 June, 2014, for denying the passenger to board the plane alone.
