A massive fire broke out at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday. See all the pictures.

Cape Town – Flights into and out of Nairobi were diverted on Wednesday morning after a ‘massive' fire engulfed the arrivals hall at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Kenya.

Kenya Airways, the region’s main carrier, cancelled all flights to East Africa's largest international airport till further notice. The airline was keeping passengers abreast of developments via Facebook and Twitter.

The following information was posted to their Facebook page on Wednesday morning:

"We would like to inform all our customers and stakeholders that due to the Fire at JKIA all our flights are currently cancelled till further notice.

All our staff and Customers are Safe and there is no damage to the Aircrafts.

5 Flights KQ 117, KQ331, KQ311, KQ863, KQ203 have been diverted to Mombasa and our staff on the ground are facilitating our customers. Within Nairobi, all our transit passengers are being facilitated to Hotels."

They also tweeted the following

"We understand that Jomo Kenyatta Airport has shut down for the day at least, so as far as we know all flights to and from Kenya have been cancelled," said Acsa spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis.

Kabelo Ledwaba, a spokesperson for SAA said that a meeting was currently being held to work out a strategy for the airline's flights to and from Nairobi following the fire. More details to follow shortly.
