WATCH: All the flights over Europe on a summer's day

Check out this absolutely mesmerising visualisation of all the flights happening over Europe in a 24-hour period on your average summer's day. WATCH

Remember earlier this year, we shared an incredible map put together by The Guardian using real time data showing exactly how many planes are in the air at any given time?

The map revealed the mind boggling fact that at least half a million human beings are in the sky, jetting off on a commercial flight to some destination for work, holiday, family responsibility and a myriad other reasons as we speak.

If you took a look at that map, we’re sure you may also have been blown away by the extreme density of flights in certain regions – Europe and South East Asia specifically – and the complete absence in others – North Africa, Russia and China.

Well, NATS Holdings, the main air navigation service provider in the UK, has visualized air traffic over Europe on a typical summer day, and the resulting video is a beauty to behold.

Watch the video here

Paul Beauchamp, senior press officer at NATS, did a blog post to introduce the videoand explained that to most people, the choreography going on above them is entirely unnoticed – it quite literally goes over their heads. However, every day thousands of air traffic controllers guide millions of passengers safely to their destinations.

He also shared these fascinating facts:

- On a typical July day there are around 30 000 flights across European airspace

- The total distance flown by these aircraft is 25 million nautical miles

- That’s 998 times around the Earth

- Or 104 trips to the Moon

- The video is 1440x faster than real time
