SA Express to offer free baggage wrapping

2013-08-02 11:00

Cape Town - SA Express has started plastic wrapping passengers' luggage for free in an effort to combat theft. The initiative will run for a three month trial period.

Beeld reports that according to statistics, wrapped baggage is 87% less likely to be pilfered than unwrapped baggage. The criminals will always go for the easiest target!

"All airlines have limited liability with regards to compensation for pilfered items or bags and we are trying to ease the burden of replacement and to lessen the trauma and invasion of privacy that victims suffer," Dayle Littlefield, spokesperson for SA Express told the paper.

Baggage wrapping services are offered at most airports for about R50 per bag.

SA Express' baggage wrapping services will be available in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein initially.

Littlefield added that although wrapping luggage will definitely discourage theft, it will probably not eliminate it completely.

"We still encourage passengers to ensure valuables."

SA Express have their own wrapping machines and staff operating them.
